Dick Cheney Thinks Trump's Muslim Ban Is 'Against Everything We Stand For'


Even former Vice President Dick Cheney has denounced Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's plan to ban Muslim immigration in America.

Cheney, a decisive conservative himself, said Monday on The Hugh Hewitt Show that the ban "goes against everything we stand for and believe in."

"I think this whole notion that somehow we can just say no more Muslims, just ban a whole religion, goes against everything we stand for and believe in. I mean, religious freedom has been a very important part of our history and where we came from," Cheney said on a Monday appearance on the radio show. "A lot of people, my ancestors got here, because they were Puritans."

Cheney called Trump's plan a "mistaken notion" and said to solve refugee and immigration problems, the U.S. must examine why they need to leave their countries in the first place.

"It’s a serious problem to make certain that the people coming in don’t represent ISIS. You’ve got to set up a vetting process," Cheney said.

Yeah, that's the point. Even Cheney is against this.

I agree with Trump's idea of strictly vetting any muslim going to USA.

I disagree with his method.

I agree with his comments on safe zones.

Taking refugees helps a lucky few. With the same effort as what taking refugees takes you could create safe zones where large numbers could take shelter.

Ok I started listening before I noticed the date was Dec 2015.

Would love to hear Cheney's comments on banning people from failed states that don't have security services who can collaborate with US border security.

The reason Dick Cheney is making anti-Trump statements is not because he has suddenly found his inner humanity, it is because Trump stated very clearly that the Bush-Cheney policies were stupid and contributed to the problems the US now faces. So cut the crap about Cheney's good sense.

Knew this one would come up more sooner than later... And, yes, people did say things...

First, Obama responded to an actual threat - the discovery that two Iraqi refugees has been implicated in bomb-making in Iraq that had targeted U.S. troops. Under congressional pressure, officials decided to reexamine all previous refugees and also impose new screening procedures, which led to a slowdown in processing new applications. Trump, by contrast, issued his executive order without any known triggering threat.

Second, Obama did not announce there was a ban on visa applications. In fact, as seen in Napolitano's answer to Collins, administration officials danced around that question. There was certainly a lot of news reporting that visa applications had been slowed to a trickle. But the Obama administration never said it was their policy to halt all applications. Even so, the delays did not go unnoticed, so there was a lot of critical news reporting at the time about the angst of Iraqis waiting for approval.

Third, Obama's policy did not prevent all citizens of that country, including green-card holders, from traveling the United States. Trump's policy is much more sweeping.
