Two Muslim men have been killed in India's north-eastern state of Assam by a mob that accused them of trying to steal cows for slaughter, police say.
The men, aged between 20 to 25 years, were beaten to death with sticks by villagers near a field in the district of Nagaon on Sunday.
"The investigations reveal that the two were trying to steal cows. The villagers cornered them after a chase and killed the cattle lifters," police officer Anat Das told reporters.
"We will take action against those who committed the crime."
It's the latest in a series of incidents of cow vigilantes attacking people transporting cattle in various parts of the country.
Hindus, a majority in India, regard the cow as holy.
