WASHINGTON — A friend of the president says Donald Trump is considering "terminating" special counsel Robert Mueller.

Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy tells Judy Woodruff of "PBS NewsHour": "I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel. I think he's weighing that option."

The White House did not immediately respond to questions about Ruddy's claims.

Under current Justice Department regulations, such a firing would have to be done by Attorney General Jeff Sessions' deputy, Rod Rosenstein, not the president— though those regulations could theoretically be set aside.

Mueller is leading the investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and potential ties between Moscow and Trump's presidential campaign. Sessions has recused himself from the investigation.

If Trump were stupid enough to do this - and history suggests he is - then thats Impeachment done and dusted. It isnt 'evidence' of obstruction of justice but ACTUAL PROOF of it.

It would be like shooting himself in the head. Trying to do that is EXACTLY what cost Nixon his job and if Trump knew anything about history (assuming he can read!) he would never do that. But this is trump where he makes monumentally bad decisions on a daily basis.

Every idle minute of Donald Trump's day is haunted by the knowledge that Robert Mueller and his Murderers' Row legal team are methodically, tirelessly, relentlessly turning over every last rock of his business to see what foul thing crawls out from underneath it. He knows there's enough proof of money laundering there to send him to prison for the rest of his life. (Presidential pardons aside, of course.)

Trump wants to fire Mueller more than he's ever wanted to fire anyone. It's like a piece of grit in his eye that he can't blink loose. It's unendurable.
