A mongrel from the RSPCA.

let the RSPCA choose it, tell them what you want.

if you don't like it, you can take it back.

My favorite family dog is a Labrador but you'll need a good vacuum cleaner.

We have a x Silky/Maltese and he's a very fun loyal little guy, we love him to bits and so far, he's good with the bubba.

Some dogs cost thousands of dollars.

And some cost next to nothing.

Should we be looking at saving a dog from a shelter/pound?

It's hard to know what to do.

YES.

They are much better and really happy to be given a 2nd chance.
They know they are in a bad spot.

You get a dog that has had it's shots, a vets check, been desexed, get a guarantee with it.

We are foster carers for cats.

the RSPCA will only give you a suitable dog.

NOT a pitbull, NOT a working dog.

Yes, but you also have to be prepared for a dud. It happens despite all care taken.

yes, that is a possibility.
with the RSPCA you can take it back and get another. No cost.

they check the dogs out and won't give out one who is aggressive to a family.

Rescued Dogs are very popular around where I live.
The dogs really do express a sense of appreciation to belong to a family and new owners who treat them well.

I have two Huskies. More an adult breed as they are super strong and take 'you' for a walk. They also have a tendency to fight when meeting other dogs because they are very pack orientated and use fighting to assert their rank and file on the Dog Sled. They don't fight to kill though. They are mostly 'Working' dogs first and 'Hunting' dogs second.
Beautiful breed though and of very playful and interactive nature. Very smart too.
I would not recommend Huskies to retirees - as their strength can drag an old person off their feet at walkie time.

There are many 'good' breeds out there.
There are good 'guard' dogs like Staffies, German Shepards - who are really protective of kids.

But I recommend a 'Mongrel' Rescue Dog from RSPCA. Mongrels tend to have less biological health problems than pure breeds. Unless you like forking out $$$ heaps to Vets.
Smaller breeds cost le$$ in food.

Last week, in local 'gossip'. Someone saw a Pitbull walking the streets off-leashed and they purposely ran it over (dead). A happy ending for any kid or other dog walking nearby.  ;) Sometimes you gotta be 'bad' to fight 'evil'.

Go to the RSPCA and if some pooch has its paws up at the cage and is looking directly at you with puppy dog eyes - then that's the one.
Don't get the ones that are too 'over-active' in the cage or the ones that look sad and forgotten in the corner of the cage. Get a dog that want's to be loved.

Don't get a Kelpie. They are too active and incredibly smart. They need wide open spaces and an activity that keeps them mentally stimulated - like work.

Very cool little guy. Mine doesn't like water but if leave him on the rocks when I go for a paddle, he'll swim out to me and get a ride back. He's had a good clip since this photo :)

yes, I agree to all of that.

Getting an rspca dog reduces the dog problem by 1.

buying a dog off a breeder encourages the puppy factories.

Tell the RSPCA what you want the dog for.

they know dogs and will get you the right dog.
that is in their best interests.

Don't buy a pug. Most need corrective surgery for breathing issues as a result of the selective breeding to get a flat face. They're also one of the least intelligent dogs and IMHO.....FUGLY

with the RSPCA you can take it back and get another. No cost.

they check the dogs out and won't give out one who is aggressive to a family.

Same with cats - they won't give you an aggressive cat that will attack you or the kids.

If you can see the pup's parents and how they behave, you've usually got an idea what the pup will be like, providing you socialise it. Unfortunately, dogs from the shelter are usually ill-treated and you can't see their parents. The same applies to pet shop puppies.

Labradors can be good pups in households with children, but no child should be left alone with any breed of dog.

Labs & Retrievers are good with kids - they won't bite.

But - as per above - you need to vacuum every day - they malt all year round.

What's the difference btwn a Labrador and a Labradoodle?

Aren't Golden Retrievers the same dog?

Apologies for asking so many questions....I'm learning.

Plus I know I'll be the one who'll end up taking proper care of the animal we get. ::)

yes lisa.

the kids won't feed it, exercise it  or clean up after it.
they won't pay the food bills or vets bills.

well within a week they will ignore it entirely and play on the computer just like they do now.

Apologies for asking so many questions....I'm learning.

Plus I know I'll be the one who'll end up taking proper care of the animal we get. ::)

Labradoodle is a labrador X poodle, part lab part poodle.

Golden Retrievers are a different breed to a Labrador. They look similar but the Retriever has a longer coat and genetically is used as a gun dog. Labs can also be used for game retrieval. They have a slightly softer temperament than the Retriever.

Get a small dog.
My dog does tiny little poops which are easy to pick up.

I once saw someone walking 2 big dogs and they both decided to take a huge dump at the same time. She had to use about 5 bags to get it all. I'd have puked

Hi Lisa,
it's better to get a cat.
They are clean and can even sleep on a bed
without awful smells.
You don't have to take them for walks -
they are low maintenance & make great pets.

Dogs poop all over the backyard - even on your doorstep.
They bark & keep neighbours & you awake at night.

Dogs require constant attention & larger breeds
can cause serious injury or death if they bite.

My dog has the best toileting habits of any dog I've owned.
He poops in the one spot and will always find somewhere private and out of the way to go and has never gone inside. Even better than an Indian cabbie!

If you have a cat door the cat will always go outside to pee.

You won't have cat smells inside.

Even when cats poop -
they dig a hole & bury it.
They are so clean compared to dogs.

cattle dogs are responsible for more dog attacks than any other dog in this country.

They're bred to be on large open farms where they can chase sheep and cattle for hours every day ..... not cooped up in a 400m2 yard with nothing to so

Probably because they're common dogs and I'd say when they bite it's much less serious.  They tend to nip as they do a cows hoof and not the sustained shaking attacks of a pitbull.

depends on what cattle dog you're looking at now. A Kelpie, sure ... tends to nip and run, but I had an old neighbour had a red heeler that even he was scared to go near. Only his dad could go near it ... If that thing had ever slipped his leash he would have killed someone. That thing was absolutely crazy.

Mind you, in this case they should never have had a dog.....  they had no idea what they were doing.

Poodles are in the Top 10 of intelligent dogs.
But boy they look absolutely ridiculous - especially when people shave them. Which you might have to do for these HOT summers we get now.

Plus - with intelligent dogs, you have to give them a lot of stimulation and attention or they get gnarly and snappy like a ADHD kid.

When a Dog shakes its head - it's disagreeing with you. Strange but true.

Cattle Dogs are not great pets to have for kids. Very nippy and of low temperament. Good for adults and farm work.

Small dogs can tend to be 'noisy' barkers and very 'nippy' to visitors at first. if family is rushing around in house, they can get tripped over - when seeking attention. Because small - they have an insecurity for attention.

Cats are a major problem. They may have some advantages compared to dogs. But they are the major cause of Dogs barking at night. Plus when Cats roam at night (killing native animals) - they cost you heaps in Vet bills from all the bite and scratch tears from fights.

There is a popular breed of cat going around. I forget the name of them - but they are 80% indoor cats and lazy. Nothing more than a piece of furniture you feed and feed the Vet.

Get a Medium sized Dog. Sprint is right - get a Dog that you and your Hubby would like. The kids will still warm to it ...for a few weeks. But as it grows, they will find their pace with the dog and appreciate it's company.
Nothing worse than little white fluffy dogs that leave hairs all over the car seats - very difficult to get out (from experience) even with a vacuum.

Everyone tells me that a Maremma (herd) Dog is the one most suited to me. Very independent dog. Famed for saving Penguins on islands. Might give it a try one day.
ATM - I'm looking after my mate's Huskies while he is in Antarctica.

I like Portuguese Water Dogs too. Water-resistant coat. Can dive down 5m underwater. Great for Swimmers, Beach-goers and Snorkelers.

If you have a small backyard over there in Huongville and live in a Block House or Unit. Then a 'small' dog is your go.

If you have a decent size yard - then go for Medium Size dog.

You can't afford a 'large' dog. Eats/poos a lot!  ;)
They need Rural or very large (old style plots) backyards.

I think you should come back to us Lisa when you have decided on a breed. We might have some good input for your choice.

...there is also the Prairie Dog. Absolutely fantastic dogs for first timers  ;)

Yep.

And heartache .....

https://amp.abc.net.au/article/9128688

A Melbourne family has been left "heartbroken" after their eight-week-old labrador puppy, Sasha, was stolen during a burglary in the city's north-east.

Police said the family returned to their home on Croydon Hills Drive in Croydon Hills on Monday morning to discover it had been broken into.

After a frantic search around the home, the family was upset to find Sasha missing.

Owner Elena Sardi said the family of three had only had the dog for one week, but in that time her four-year-old daughter Maia had become "inseparable" from the puppy.

"I was heartbroken, I'm still shaking … we are really sad," she said.

"Even though it's a short period of time it's enough to get attached and feel part of the family.

Police said they believed the burglary took place between 9:30am and 11:30am, when Ms Sardi had left the house to take her daughter to see a doctor.

The puppy was in the family's backyard at the time it went missing, but police said it was unlikely it escaped on its own.

A number of items including a laptop, iPad and jewellery were also stolen, police said.

Ms Sardi said the puppy had a medical condition, and the family had put up posters around the area in the hope the dog would be returned.

"I don't care about the rest but the dog, we want her home as soon as possible," she said.

Looks like that Pup has become 'Greyhound' training meat.
Let alone fodder for a local Pitbull.
Out in Rural areas - there are plenty of small wallabies and kangaroos to be fed live to these breeds.
Which they do.
