Title: missing submarine
Post by bogarde73 on Nov 23rd, 2017 at 5:21am
The US Navy reports detecting a metal heat source at depth of 230 m which is believed to be the missing Argentine sub. A sonic contact has also been made.
It will be now be a race to effect a rescue as oxygen is close to being exhausted.

Battery fire 8 days ago. Me think it's a recovery, rather than a rescue.

It just illustrates how pathetic the submarine design is for dealing with situations of emergency like this.

Days would have been saved if there was a simple device that is released from the hull of the submarine that then shoots up to the surface from where it transmits a signal.

Precisely why I never wanted to join the navy - I could not see myself deep underwater and hopeless or floating in the sea hopeless.

On the other hand... I would be happy to be associated with any aircraft.... on a carrier.... the most vulnerable and most attack-worthy modern ship of war.

They have both, Herbie.  The German Type 209 Class variant created for India, the Shishumar class submarine has an escape pod under it's weather deck.  No other submarines have them.  All submarines have buoys which can be released by the crew and float to the surface - if they have time and if the release mechanism is working properly.  They have had them since the 1930s in the Royal Navy and since WWII in NATO navies.    However, accidents underwater can be sudden and catastrophic. HMS Affray, an "A-class" submarine was lost in 1951.  Tragically, her buoy was wired shut, preventing it's release because it had come loose earlier.   I'd recommend you read the Wikipedia entry on her loss.  It makes sobering reading.

The conditions on board a submarine are cramped and space is severely limited.  If you have the chance, Cods, go on board one of the submarines in Darling Harbour.   It will tell you a great deal about the sort of people who man them.

Yes, an entire crew can be rendered unconscious through foul air.  As the submarines run on lead-acid batteries while submerged, there is a danger of Chlorine gas - if the acid comes into contact with sea-water it produces Chlorine gas.  While the battery compartment is much better sealed than it was in yesteryears, it is still a danger. In the case of the Argentine submarine, it appears to have suffered a battery fire, which would prevent them from being able to use their air scrubbers to clean the air and remove the CO^2 which would have built up.   CO^2 poisoning is insidious and renders it's victims unconscious within a few minutes to a few hours (depending on the concentration).

little hope they would be found alive now- but they may have reserves of oxygen on board- all we can do is keep our fingers crossed- and thank you Bogarde73 for bringing this to our attention even if none of can actually rescue them- we ought to know about these men even if they dont have eyes on stalks like a prawn!!!!

I quite agree. It is absolutely the stuff of nightmares. I hope for rescue for these poor unfortunate souls.

It's just that Cods trols every thread i start with demands on me of what i expect people to do about it.

She doesn't seem to do it to anyone else.

I'm just curious as to why.

I'd like to have the power to solve everybody's problems, truly I would.

...god rest their souls..

Verse 1: Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Verse 2: O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy word,
Who walked'st on the foaming deep,
And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Verse 3: Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood
Upon the chaos dark and rude,
And bid its angry tumult cease,
And give, for wild confusion, peace;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Verse 4: O Trinity of love and power!
Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe'er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

It is said here that they only have 7 days supply of oxygen  :-[ :'(
Quote:
How Submarines Work
BY MARSHALL BRAIN & CRAIG FREUDENRICH, PH.D.

Life Support

There are three main problems of life support in the closed environment of submarine:

Maintaining the air quality
Maintaining a fresh water supply
Maintaining temperature
Maintaining the Air Quality
The air we breathe is made up of significant quantities of four gases:

Nitrogen (78 percent)
Oxygen (21 percent)
Argon (0.94 percent)
Carbon dioxide (0.04 percent)
When we breathe in air, our bodies consume its oxygen and convert it to carbon dioxide. Exhaled air contains about 4.5 percent carbon dioxide. Our bodies do not do anything with nitrogen or argon. A submarine is a sealed container that contains people and a limited supply of air. There are three things that must happen in order to keep air in a submarine breathable:

Oxygen has to be replenished as it is consumed. If the percentage of oxygen in the air falls too low, a person suffocates.
Carbon dioxide must be removed from the air. As the concentration of carbon dioxide rises, it becomes a toxin.
The moisture that we exhale in our breath must be removed.
Oxygen is supplied either from pressurized tanks, an oxygen generator (which can form oxygen from the electrolysis of water) or some sort of "oxygen canister" that releases oxygen by a very hot chemical reaction. (You may remember these canisters because of their problems on the MIR space station -- see this page for details). Oxygen is either released continuously by a computerized system that senses the percentage of oxygen in the air, or it is released in batches periodically through the day.

Carbon dioxide can be removed from the air chemically using soda lime (sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide) in devices called scrubbers. The carbon dioxide is trapped in the soda lime by a chemical reaction and removed from the air. Other similar reactions can accomplish the same goal

I am unsure why everybody suggests this is a case of "explosion".   I heard the Argentine Navy spokesman use the word "implosion" when describing what they had heard.   "Implosion" makes a great deal more sense, as it appears the submarine has sunk below it's crush depth.   In that case, the submarine would have been crushed by the ocean pressure.  It would not have "exploded".    ::)

I thought an implosion was more likely than an explosion and sadly it seems I was not so wrong after all.

The Argentine Navy is now admitting that the snorkel was leaking, which caused the battery to short-circuit. It seems they switched to the unaffected battery and carried on. Presumably at some point the snorkel must have failed completely and the sub sank. It possible some may have survived if they had time to seal off compartments but the volume of water would have quickly overwhelmed the crew. ::)

An edited report I received from a US Sub Forum.

"NALYSIS OF ACOUSTIC DETECTION OF THE
LOSS OF THE ARGENTINE SUBMARINE SAN JUAN
By Bruce Rule
An analytical review of all information released by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization on the acoustic signal associated with the loss of the Argentina Submarine ARA SAN JUAN confirms the following:
That acoustic signal originated near 46-10S, 59-42W at 1358Z (GMT) on 15 November 2017. It was produced by the collapse (implosion) of the ARA SAN JUAN pressure-hull at a depth of 1275-feet. Sea pressure at the collapse depth was 570 PSI. The frequency of the collapse event signal (bubble-pulse) was about 4.4 Hz.

The energy released by the collapse was equal to the explosion of 12,500 pounds of TNT at the depth of 1275-feet. That energy was produced by the nearly instantaneous conversion of potential energy (sea-pressure) to kinetic energy, the motion of the intruding water-ram which entered the SAN JUAN pressure-hull at a speed of about 1800 mph.
The entire pressure-hull was completely destroyed (fragmented/compacted) in about 40 milliseconds (0.040s or 1/25th of a second), the duration of the compression phase of the collapse event which is half the minimum time required for cognitive recognition of an event.

Although the crew may have known collapse was imminent, they never knew it was occurring. They did not drown or experience pain. Death was instantaneous.

The SAN JUAN wreckage sank vertically at an estimated speed between 10 and 13 knots. Bottom impact would not have produced an acoustic event detectable at long range.

The open question is: why was no corrective action - such as blowing ballast - taken by the SAN JUAN crew before the submarine sank to collapse depth? According to Argentine Navy spokesman Gabriel Galeazzi, the Commanding Officer of the SAN JUAN reported a "failure" in the submarine's "battery system," The time of that report was 0730 on 15 November, assumed to have been GMT. Subsequently, the problem was reported to have been "fixed." The SAN JUAN intended to submerged and continued its transit north. The SAN JUAN pressure-hull collapsed at 1358 GMT on 15 November.

why not a simple tracking device in peace time ??..

at the end of the day its still a machine and every day things for wrong with machines....

think of the families at home waiting all this time.....

:'( :'( :'(

Submarines rely on stealth and remaining hidden - no point letting the world know where you are... besides, even in 'peacetime', there are various operations going on, surveillance, monitoring, the occasional (though rare) sneaky insertion of SF troops, remaining on station for the possibility of an outbreak of war..... the world isn't always a healthy place with all those dratted humans on it.... always looking for trouble....
