Title: Wedge tailed eagles killed by poison
Post by Baronvonrort on Jun 8th, 2018 at 11:35am
Sad news, I wonder if recent government 1080 baiting program was responsible for this.

Guidelines for 1080 say carcasses poisoned by 1080 should be buried or burnt because they are toxic to animals that eat them.

More than 100 wedge-tailed eagles are found POISONED on a farm – and locals fear as many as 400 could have been killed

More than 100 wedge-tailed eagle birds have been poisoned and found dead on a farm in rural Victoria.
The dead birds were found by officers from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) on farmland in Tubbut in far eastern Victoria.
A Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP) spokesman told Daily Mail Australia: 'DELWP Officers are investigating the death of a number of Wedge-tailed Eagles and a further four protected species birds on farmland in east Gippsland.

'DELWP is taking this matter very seriously. No charges have been laid but our investigations are ongoing.'
'As these investigations are in progress, we are not in a position to comment on additional details,' the DELWP spokesman said.
The wedge-tailed eagle is Australia's largest raptor standing at one metre in height and with a wingspan that can reach up to 2.8m.
They prey on a range of animals including rabbits, mammals, lizards, possums, foxes and feral cats

Many documented cases of Wedge tailed eagles being killed from eating carcasses of animals poisoned with 1080.

100, on 1 property??????

I dunno 'bout dat, I have never seen wedges flocking like seagulls, one or two in their area is what I always observed living in rural western victoria.

I am not pro baiting, I'd rather see a bounty per head for vermine, and let shooters have at 'em.
Shooters love to blow stuff away, and we get rid of pests, win, win.

Cats would be the first to go under king mozza's rule.

I had a mind to say the same thing ....... they are very territorial ..... and I've never seen anymore than a pair & sometimes their immature young in any area.

So when I read 100 on one property I was tempted to call BS.

No this looks like it was deliberate poisoning by a farmer who had th mistaken belief that wedge tailed eagles kill new born lambs (they don't).

Quote:
A farmer in the area, who did not want to be named, said up to 180 dead eagles and hundreds of carcasses of other native animals had been found on the property at Tubbut, near the NSW border, last month.

He said the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) had been tipped off by a former employee.

A spokesman from DELWP said an investigation into the deaths was underway.

"No charges have been laid," he said.

Sounds like a plan.

As long as you remember to tax the rat farms. (A Discworld reference.)

I've seen wegies in large numbers eating road kill on the Nullabor. They're so slow to get airborne, unfortunately many of them get turned into roadkill too.

doubtful it could be 100. i see couples together but they are pretty solitary birds. i have never ever in my life seen a flock of wedge tails.

i think thats an exaggeration

That's 3 that have expressed a similar view.
