Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes has joined a campaign to stop peak body Clubs Australia cutting weekend penalty rates for licensed clubs employees.   

Clubs Australia is facing a rebellion from some of its 6500 member clubs after applying last year to the Fair Work Commission to abolish the Registered and Licensed Clubs Award and move employees to the Hospitality Industry Award.

The commission cut penalty rates for the hospitality award in February.   :(

Club Macquarie, Newcastle Leagues Club, Denman RSL, Wangi RSL and Kotara Bowling Club are among 14 Hunter clubs which have joined a campaign by union group United Voice against the new award.


Each has submitted a form letter to the commission stating their support for existing award conditions and penalty rates for their employees. 

It is understood some club boards have committed to maintaining penalty rates for employees regardless of the outcome of the FWC case.   :)

Union Voice estimates the Clubs Australia application would cost a level-six cook earning $24 an hour about $96 if they worked both days of a weekend. It says the award shift would affect the weekend wages of 1500 permanent full-time and part-time club staff in the Hunter. 

Cr Nelmes called on Hunter clubs to join United Voice’s “good clubs” campaign, which recognises clubs for publicly supporting staff conditions and seeks to shame those that do not.

“I stand with our local clubs workers who do not deserve to have their penalty rates cut,” she said.

“I call on all our local clubs across the region to reflect on the right thing to do in this situation and actively join the ‘good clubs’ national campaign.”

Clubs Australia’s application to the FWC argued that licensed clubs were similar to establishments covered by the hospitality award.

“The clubs should not be placed at a cost disadvantage in comparison to other hospitality establishments based on higher employment costs contained in the Clubs Award in comparison to the Hospitality Award,” it said in a submission last year.

The next hearings on the matter begin on October 29.

People that work weekends and public holidays should get paid the penalty rates.  They should not have been cut in the first place.   :(

**falls about laughing.... we've had proper penalty rates for years here in REALITYWORLD, as opposed to SLUMSVILLE and POVERTYZONE...

We live HERE... and costs of living dictate that we earn enough to live HERE - not 'there' - wherever  that may be.  Let the walking dead bury their dead in foreign soils - our duty is to the living......those living HERE.

I grew up in rebellious Newcastle - the graveyard of touring Rugby League teams... a former Lady Mayoress was the daughter of a workmate of my father in the Fire Brigade there ..... who the hell is this strange-named person in the seat now?

Ten to a room - no problem... couple of old containers out the back, hook up an electrical cable from the back of the house, sling in a couple of old mattresses..... $500 a week in Sydney CBD and hand over your passport at the door ... plus power costs... throw in a bag of rice once a week and Mao's Yer Uncle!

I worked shift work for many years and I know just how hard that is.

People working unsociable hours deserve some extra compensation.

However, what annoys me is the amount of lies coming out of all political parties.

For example ... Labor claims that they will "restore penalty rates" ... implication? Penalty rates have been removed. Not true, they were reduced by 10% to 15%

The other lie that keeps coming is that the current government has "cut education funding".

No, it has not.

True, Labor wants to spend a lot more than the current government does, but it is a lie that they have cut funding.

By all means state that your party will spend more, but don't lie about the other side. They are increasing spending, not cutting it. They may well not be spending as much as your side promises to spend, but please Labor  Party... stop lying about it.

It really pisses me off.

......wow I wonder how anyone on a standard rate survives?
