Title: Melbourne gets drenched
Post by Ajax on Nov 6th, 2018 at 3:44pm
Just saw the news so went out to inspect back yard, left the lid of a 75 litre bin there was 25mm (1") of water in it.

Does that mean 25mm fell in the few hours we were away...??

Hi Bobby

Thanks for that, I checked a nearby suburb on that list and it was very close with what was in my bin.

About 25mm, so I think in this case the bin can be a rain gauge, it was in the open no structure close to it.

Yes - it varied greatly depending on the suburb.
Melbourne is a big place.
It can be fine & blue skies in one suburb & black skies & pouring with rain in another suburb 80km away.

Hopefully the blood from all the African gang bashings has been washed off the streets and the city can feel renewed and refreshed.

When it's hot & dry the North winds cover the city of Melbourne
in a thick layer of desert dust.
The rain washes it all away - it's wonderful.
The streets will be clean.

Bobby, I know you're only trying to help Aussie, but even seemingly harmless medicines should have some medical oversight.

It is claimed that chronic alcoholics are at increased risk of paracetamol (acetaminophen) hepatotoxicity not only following overdosage but also with its therapeutic use.

Rainfall is measured in mm per square metre.
So unless your bin lid has a surface area of exactly a square metre (which I doubt) then you received more than 25mm of rain.

So how does that work with the radio n gauges

They are only 25 mm square?

From what I can gather the 75 litre bin's sides even though tapered at the bottom are close enough to straight to make the bin a rain gauge.

The only rule is the container has to have vertical sides its volume doesn't matter.

So I think we had 25mm of rain in those few hours.

Actually yes, you are correct
As long as the sides are straight and the bottom is flat the area of the container is irrelevant.
