(CNN)WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, police announced Thursday.
The Metropolitan Police said its officers went into the embassy, where Assange has been living for the past seven years, to detain him for "failing to surrender to the court" over a warrant issued in 2012.
He has been taken into custody at a central London police station, police said.

The Australian whistleblower has been holed up at the embassy, yards from the Harrods department store in Knightsbridge, since 2012, when he was granted asylum as part of a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he was facing allegations of sexual assault.
The Swedish case has since been dropped, but Assange feared US extradition due to his work with WikiLeaks and remained in the embassy. He has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Police said Thursday that Assange would be presented before Westminster Magistrates' Court in London as soon as is possible.

US confirms charges against Assange

The US Department of Justice has confirmed Julian Assange has been indicted on conspiracy with Chelsea Manning to commit computer intrusion in 2010.

    “The indictment alleges that in March 2010, Assange engaged in a conspiracy with Chelsea Manning, a former intelligence analyst in the US Army, to assist Manning in cracking a password” on classified DoD [US Department of Defense] computer systems, according to a Justice Department press release.

The indictment -- unsealed Thursday -- was signed last year on March 8.

Earlier Manning's lawyer expressed hope that Assange's arrest on Thursday in London could open the door to Manning's release from incarceration.

Moira Meltzer-Cohen, an attorney for Chelsea Manning, said: “Were he to be extradited [to the US] we hope it would signal her release but that is not, unfortunately, a foregone conclusion.”

Manning served about seven years in prison for her disclosure of US military and diplomatic secrets to WikiLeaks in 2010, before being released in May 2017.

But Manning was jailed again in early March of this year, when a judge held her in contempt for refusing to testify before a grand jury about those disclosures.

Her testimony appeared to be part of an effort by federal prosecutors investigating Assange.

Assange may be many things, but he is not a dangerous religious fanatic, so he will not be going to Guantanamo Bay, if he is extradited to the USA. Nor will he be tortured. His enemies, who seem to be just about everyone, will use any court proceedings to discredit him superficially, while gleaning whatever hacking techniques they may not already have. But my guess is they figured out his MO day one.

I don't know about that but it was reported in the New York Times and other major newspapers.  But, the point is, it was Assange who first sourced the material in some sort of dark arrangement with insider Manning.

There are those who will argue that what he did, while in breach of normal legitimate protocols, was in the public interest and that outweighs and trumps all the niceties, much like the Aljazeera investigation into the NRA and incidentally to that, One Nation.

he dealt in stolen goods. He released information he had no business releasing, all to feed his ego.

If it was just information that caught out the govt. lying, I can understand and even in some instances applaud. But when he released secret notes that served no purpose other than boost his own ego, while damaging foreign relations or risked the lives of people on the ground, then he went to far. He believed his own hype.

You aren't preaching that the wheels of justice must turn, you are preaching Assange is the bad guy. All I remember him doing was posting a video of some killing in Iraq and posting some government documents online. The laws dealing with disclosing government information are supposed to deal with government employees. Most people in society support transparent government. Most people want to know about things like Tonkin Gulf. Most people want to see the evidence before we go to war. You're saying he needs to be accountable for doing this? Why are you so closely aligned with the government? Why is he a bad guy for releasing information, but the guys committing war crimes are not? Why are you such a monster? he dealt in stolen goods. He released information he had no business releasing, all to feed his ego. If it was just information that caught out the govt. lying, I can understand and even in some instances applaud. But when he released secret notes that served no purpose other than boost his own ego, while damaging foreign relations or risked the lives of people on the ground, then he went to far. He believed his own hype.

Of course you would know him and anything he said and did inside out.

What gives the US as a sovereign state a right to operate outside the borders of their sovereignty ..... in someone else's sovereignty?

I didn't say Asssange was lying or deceitful the inference was the US and western govts were and have been for decades..... so why say you never said he lied once?
