Robert Spencer as usual uses this case as an excuse to launch into a rant about how this crime is in line with Islamic doctrine, and therefore Islam is to blame. He then quotes from an article that describes the assailants as "smell[ing] terribly of alcohol". Alcohol is of course notoriously strictly prohibited in Islam.

You can't have it both ways Mr Spencer.

Muhammad himself was a hypocrite on the topic of alcohol, so you can hardly hold up an example of modern Muslims being hypocrites as evidence that it has nothing to do with Islam.

Spencer has absolutely no reason to suggest that Islam was the motivating factor in this assault, it is just a most blatant case of bigotry. Literally the only thing he knows about the assailant was that he is Moroccon. Yet he quotes some seemingly incriminating verses from the Quran and without a shred of evidence assumes that these verses were in the forefront of his mind as his licence to assault a woman. Instead of the obvious conclusion - that he was just another dick who got drunk and assaulted a woman because he's a drunken dick, and that religion had nothing to do with it. Just the same as what an infinite number of drunk dicks do on a daily basis all over the world - muslim or not.

Even if true (its not the Quran, so doesn't count for me), why is this apparent change of heart by Muhammad hypocricy that is equivalent to a drunken Moroccon obeying the apparent Quranic command to sexually assault women, but ignoring the prohibition on alcohol?

True. Muhammad practiced hypocrisy on a far greater scale. Perhaps if he spent a few decades raping and pillaging we could compare him with Muhammad. As it is he is only a petty criminal.
