Title: Will you get the tracking app?
Post by The_Barnacle on Apr 17th, 2020 at 4:40pm
The Australian government is planning to launch an app in a matter of weeks that will trace every person who has been in contact with a mobile phone owner who has tested positive for coronavirus in the previous few weeks, in a bid to automate coronavirus contact tracing, and allow the easing of restrictions.

The Singapore version has many negative reviews on the app store, with users complaining about being forced to keep the app open in order for it to function.

That would not only be inconvenient for people travelling around with their phone, but would drain the battery faster.

The prime minister has said consent would be key to the app, indicating it would not be mandatory, and people would share information through the app only if they consented to it.

But on Friday he muddied the waters somewhat, indicating he would not entirely rule out making it mandatory.

“My preference is not to do that, my preference is to give Australians the go of getting it right ... I don’t want to be drawn on that [making it mandatory], I want to give Australians the opportunity to get it right,” he told Triple M. “That is my objective, that is my Plan A and I really want Plan A to work.”

It'll all be over by the time that app comes out, and they won't get it right, if they can't get their govt sites right, how are they going to get anything else right?

Not everyone has mobile reception and have to rely on govt sites but they haven't had anywhere near the information that was needed for us bushies to be well informed about accurate locations of infected people

So, no issues with the app identifying when you're speeding?

No worries about getting a slew of traffic tickets for 'amber light' infringements, or (god forbid) travelling too long on a freeway in the outer lane...

And if you think 'they'll never do that!'... Never underestimate the human instinct for control over others' behaviour.

My mobile phone is only turned on when I have to make the occasional call. I might (if I remember) turn it on briefly once a day to see if I have any messages.

On the rare occasions that it is turned on it isn't connected to the Internet and has GPS tracking, etc. turned off in settings.

And, if anyone I don't know asks.... I don't have a mobile phone.  :)

No I will not.

If they force it on people then I will not have a phone anymore. I will cancel my account effective immediately upon  their demand.
Reconnect the home phone and continue with life the old school way.
I only have a phone for work purposes anyway.

They track us now using metadata. Snowden told us that years ago. Even showed you what to remove from the phone so they couldnt track you. This is just a stunt to get your permission to do what they already are doing illegally.
I have nothing to hide but I do not trust them at all and I will not grant them permission to track me.
I don't have a lot of apps on my phone due to all the permissions you have to grant so they can get stuffed.

You should listen to Edward Snowden talk about what having your phone 'off' really means.... Unless you've got a phone from the 90s (like some CIA operatives) where you can remove the battery!

I'll download it just in case I'm asymptomatically positive I'd like for my contacts to be traced, and vica versa.

If there's good legislation around it where the info can never be used for the prosecution of any crime or offense and the data is flushed when this health emergency ends, all gud.

I might install the app, although I normally activate my phone's Bluetooth only when driving.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer doesn't rule out forcing Australians to download the Government's coronavirus tracing app

Updated yesterday at 5:56pm

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly has not ruled out making the Government's coronavirus tracing app compulsory for all Australians.
Key points:

Paul Kelly says app will be voluntary at first
Government needs 40 per cent to download app for it to work
PM says downloading the app a matter of 'national service'

The app will use data from people's phones to tell health authorities who has been in close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case, and who may need to be tested.

The Government has said 40 per cent of Australians would need to sign up to the app for it to have enough data to function properly.

The app is called TraceTogether and uses Bluetooth to create a record of other nearby phones that also have the app.

But it does not track people's location.

The Government has said the data collected by its tracing app would be highly secure, with
only health authorities allowed to access it after a positive case was identified.

The Prime Minister said this week that Attorney-General Christian Porter is in the process of making sure relevant privacy safeguards are in place.

As a matter of fact.

Some years ago, the RTA grubberment lapdog.

Was looking at using black box data from your vehicle to download vehicle speed at every registration.

Any speed over the legal limit would be fined and added to your fee

It was only rejected because they couldn't work out the logistics to pin the fine on an individual, and it could be challenged in court.

But, ill bet pennies to pounds that this idea has not been discarded.

And with this app, it's just one step closer.

Trust the grubberment?  .........only if you are stupid.

Failing that, I'll be taking the SIM card out of the phone and destroying it and then removing the number from all places where I've used it for contact purposes like Centrelink, Google (for Gmail), etc.

Then it'll be landline only, I still have one of those. Try tracking me with that.

Yeah, and if you'd attended to your own matter of 'national service' and shut the borders down in January when it was obvious even to Blind Freddy that this virus was about to spread worldwide instead of being more worried about the economy then none of this BS (business closures, lockdowns, tracking apps) would be necessary.

Sure, airlines, airports, tourism, etc. would have been badly affected by a January border closure but guess what? They're still being badly affected now along with everyone else with business closures and the million+ job losses not to mention the billions the Federal government now has to spend in an attempt to fix all this mess.

I'm not one for believing in conspiracy theories but the longer this goes on with lockdowns, card only transactions and now tracking apps one can't be blamed for starting to smell a rat... although plain government incompetence is still the #1 candidate for me so far.

No. The virus isn't a hoax.

But governments (including our own) are apparently taking advantage of the situation and using it as an "excuse" to try and bring in '1984 style' societies.

No, I won't be.

But every night I've been writing ina journal as a sort of mental health upkeep, started just before COVID-19.

I find it to be, for me, a beneficial practice.

Got the idea from here,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45bYNk7wbd8

Anyway, as part of that I have a list of anywhere I've had to go and anyone I've had contact with including dates and times from google location tracking so if ever I do get infected, I've got the list ready to give to whoever needs it.

But I don't even like Google tracking me, let alone the Government, Liberal Coalition, Labor, Greens whoever they are.

The only time I may be OK with this sort of tracking is if people in mandatory quarantine because they have been infected need tracking to make sure they don't leave their house, but you can just go without your phone etc...

Let me stress, "may be ok with it".

It would require some actual thought first.

Yes they are.

But its not that politicians are particularly 'Dr Evils'...

It is the fundamental nature of all governments to collect data on its citizens, be that by censuses, departmental collaboration and international collaboration.

Any opportunity to improve the efficiency of data collecting is almost never unconsidered.

Which is why, if even for nothing else, democracy is essential to the protection of the powerless against the powerful.

Its not a cliche for no reason that 'speaking truth to power takes courage'...

Democracy (and a free media) gives senior politicians cause for pause before they react on their (very human) instinct to find out, more efficiently, what 'the people' are up to.

And don't think politicians admire whistleblowers (no matter what their public rhetoric would have you believe), they despise (and fear) them like a virus and take every opportunity to ostracise and extricate them from the state sector wherever they're found or suspected.

OK, good. Phew.

I think there has been a leap of cause and observation here.

Aussie and NZ has been largely spared due to our isolation and actions from our Governments.
Europe, the UK and the US are faring much worse than us. I accept the reports from there as being reasonably accurate and true. Their economies are seized, they are having many 100's die daily. In the future many of the health workers will have serious mental issues.

I dislike the constraints I live under. It is really hard of me. Most days I cry.
To avoid what has happened overseas and on the results of our politicians decisions I will do what they reasonably ask.
An app on my phone so they can track any future outbreaks I see as being a very good idea. Not just reasonable but a very good idea.

Putting a conspiracy theory on the decisions of a government who are successfully quelling a pandemic is fraught with serious risk.

This is not a game.

Hey that's a great idea. And if old scumbag Morrison doesn't get his 40% quota then the country has spoken.
Saying he will make it mandatory on a device that you own and pay for is just dictatorship so go fkkk yourself Scott. You and all your cronies are frauds. Overpaid scumbag frauds.

Perhaps the people of this great nation need to have government employees tracked. That's a better idea. We need to know where they are at all times...who they're dealing with and what they are saying. No secretes from the public.

The technology is already there for us to be tracked...however it is illegal to do so by the authorities because you haven't given them permission to do so. This app solves that problem. Also...trusting the government is like giving a dog a bone and expecting it not to eat it. They lie everyday to gain votes.

Wait till 5g is up and going. I will not have a phone when 5g comes in and 4g is no longer available. There are ex installers, designers etc all trying to warn you now of the dangers. Yet no one is listening. The gov sure isn't going to tell you.

With hindsight there are many things which the government could have done better, however at the moment it seems to be handling the crisis as well as can be expected, therefore I don't think a tracking app is necessary. Unfortunately if too many idiots believe that they are special and the rules currently in place don't apply to them the government will have its excuse to go ahead with this Orwellian plan.

Firstly, obviously, legislation... It will be an offense not to have the app installed...

But the devil will lie in the detail.

You will be liable for a fine if a police officer can detect that you do not have the app installed... That wouldn't be that high-tech... Of course, if you didn't have a smartphone with you... Well that'd a detail that would be left for another day when regulations, supporting the legislation, are refined.

What politicians will do is wait until a high-profile case or cases come to light... Then a good old finger wagging at those potential virus carriers caught without the app, will be the trigger for more rigorous and smarter app verification software...

Unfortunately the media will assist the government here because 'if it bleeds, it leads' , so those who are the unlucky examples... Will be painted as (quasi) 'terrorists'.... An attitude that the government will likely blatantly endorse.

Of course, the government of the day, will use the 'Pontius Pilate' defence and simply wash their hands of any consequences because 'the people can't be trusted to do the right thing', and a variation of the line... 'We tried to be nice about it but look what you made us do. Now you've forced our hand'... Will be the Prime Ministerial catch-cry.

In the end 'the people' will be blamed for having 'not having done the right thing' and now nana's sick.

I'd like to see my Samsung Galaxy S5 download this tracking app (or any other app) when it isn't connected to the Internet and has mobile data turned off all the time.

There also haven't been any security updates for the S5 for 2 or 3 years now which is another reason why it is never online.

Morrison said on Thursday automatic contact tracing would be a key component in states and territories easing some restrictions on “high-value, low-risk economic activities” after the next four weeks.

He compared using the app to buying bonds during the war.

“In the war, people bought war bonds to get in behind the national effort. What we’re doing in fighting this fight is we’ll be asking people to download an app which helps us trace the virus quickly and the more people who do that, the more we can get back to a more liveable set of arrangements.”

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/17/australias-coronavirus-contact-tracing-app-what-we-know-so-far

So he is implying that to ease restrictions we need to download the app, which is a form of blackmail

This is my understanding of how a Covid tracking app might work.

It keeps a record of the location you and others who have got that app on their phones have been for the past month or so.

If you are suspected of having covid you'll be taken to an area that had the equivalent of a PC3 room confinement.
I work in PC3 rooms. They are the real deal, it's scary. I ask where can I put things down, what can I bring in, I did training to be allowed in there. You be very careful in those areas. They are clean to surgical room standards. It costs $1000s to clean them and weeks to test them.

So, you are taken to this very sterile artificial environment. People do not go in there unless they have to. Then they are in pressurised suits.
They want to know where you have been in the past 3 weeks and who you have met.
At this stage you can give them your phone with the tacking app on it or say 'oh, I do not have that app on my phone.'

Now, the medical system has either an impossible situation on their hands OR they can download your information and ring 100's of people and test them.

You have either helped Australia or you have killed other people.

This is the medical side.

I am really disappointed at the attitude from many people here.
I do not know if you are being 'tough' or want to display your resoluteness to your 'freedom'.

I work with very intelligent dedicated medical health workers. They are much more intelligent and dedicated than I am.
They work all hours, whenever is needed. They have been in tears when their cells die.
Whenever they ask for my help, I rush to help them. Every time, after 25 years there, I rush to help them.
We are not the front line. We are trying to make a vaccine for you.

You people, you don't want to get an app on your phones to help us.

I'd like to see where it says in ANY legislation that the government has the right to force people to install apps on their phones.

Not to mention that forcing people to install apps wouldn't go down well with the majority of the population - just looking at our small survey here is an indication of what people Australia wide would think about it.

those guys are ruthless and aggressive.

the machine learning, AI and algorhythms that face book use .

just one example,

facebook is now better at diagnosing manic depressive behaviour then doctors.
google is better at diagnosing it.

both can track your phone and see if you are visiting medical facilties, see if you are using certain words in your posts that indicate elevated or depressed mood. see if you are spending more on your credit card.
see if you are buying more chocalate (a subtel marker of depression in women), more alcohol ( a marker of depression in men).

and what do they do with the date.

if you are becoming manic, they send you ads for casinos
if you are becoming depressed they send you ads booze and chocolate.

they cash in on your weaknesses.

God you're full of shite.

One in four of us suffer from mental health problems every year, and around one third of the world's population uses Facebook. "FOMO" and "online addiction" might be thrown around as buzzwords, but the overlap between mental health and social media use is a burgeoning field of study.

The Facebook use in Affective Disorders (FAD) Study is currently underway in Melbourne, Australia; it's a collaboration between researchers from the Monash Alfred Psychiatry Centre and computer scientists from the School of Intelligent Systems at RMIT University. It tracks the Facebook activity and mood of participants with bipolar disorder to work out what "normal" is for them, with the hope of alerting subjects when they begin to stray from their usual patterns towards a potential relapse.

The study launched in June, and is open to anyone in Australia who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and uses Facebook.

The thing about mental illness is that it's not like a blood test—you can't say, 'Oh, their Facebook level is 50, they must be becoming manic…'

I spoke to psychiatrist Rowan Miller, who was inspired to create the FAD study after meeting a patient similar to my friend when he was still a med student.

"We were talking about what it was like to have a mental illness as a student," he told me, "and I asked if there was any way we could have foreseen the relapse coming. And he said, 'Yes, my Facebook. For weeks, friends have been texting me asking if I'm ok because I've been on Facebook so much.'"

For people with bipolar disorder, a manic episode can involve symptoms like impaired judgement, aggression, euphoria, rapid speech, racing thoughts, and at worst breaks from reality. Coupled with a decreased need for sleep, for some people the lure of venting their thoughts on Facebook proves overwhelming. Miller recalled asking why the patient hadn't gone out and socialized offline; "He replied that if you're awake at three in the morning, and you have the computer in front of you, it's just the lowest barrier to socializing with other people."

In the study, volunteers grant access to their Facebook metadata, allowing Miller and his team to analyze the frequency of their Facebook posts but not the content. The team then develops behavior algorithms which track the rhythm of the user's regular Facebook posts, and alert them when posting frequencies show inconsistencies.

"More than half of our participants have had relapses on Facebook before," said Miller, "So we're able to train the machines to understand how their relapses occur. The thing about mental illness is that it's not like a blood test—you can't say, 'Oh, their Facebook level is 50, they must be becoming manic…' There's absolutely no standard. But we tailor the study to them."

We may be better off waiting for the Google Apple Trace Together app.

On the face of it, it does offer some serious privacy advantages. Taking the data out of the hands of the government, offering better personal anonymization and greater functional integration between Apple and Android platforms.

In reality Google and Apple track us already don't they, so adding slightly different functionality for a time may be preferable to opening the door to greater government tracking.

Quote:
Built-in benefits

The Apple-Google system has some advantages over these other approaches. Because the companies control the operating systems and the phones people own, they can actually build a more private and more usable coronavirus tracing technology.

For example, Singapore’s TraceTogether app is technically similar to the Apple-Google version, using Bluetooth to monitor any contact made by people diagnosed with coronavirus. But because it is a third-party app, it has enormous disadvantages: for example, iPhone TraceTogether users must keep their phone unlocked at all times as they move in order for the system to work. That’s something Apple can easily build around and then, with Google, scale to make accessible to virtually every government on earth.

But that scale is part of the problem. If the benefit is that the two companies can use the data of 3 billion people, the drawback is that they can use the data of 3 billion people. Building contact tracing and surveillance without being creepy is not easy.

The answer to this is that the Apple-Google system will not be a monolith: its implementation will vary from country to country.

The proposed Australian/Singaporean system ...

Quote:
Should I be worried about the privacy implications?

Always. But there isn’t as yet enough detail about how it would work in Australia to know what the implications are. Morrison said he was pushing for greater privacy protections than the Singapore model.

“The reason we are not quite ready yet is we are still working through ensuring that it meets the privacy protections, which are robust and up to a standard that we believe is necessary for the Australian context, and that is what the attorney general is working on right now,” he said.

Privacy experts have warned the app needs to be more decentralised, so that the central servers that store the IDs do not become honeypots for potential hackers.

Government services minister Stuart Robert said the app was going through a privacy impact assessment with the help of the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

When pressed for more detail, his office declined to comment.

Are there other options?

One possibility that could even be integrated into the Trace Together app is the proposal by Apple and Google.

That version works like the TraceTogether app, but with more randomised IDs that change every 15 minutes and, unlike TraceTogether, it does not require you to provide your mobile phone number.

When a person who has tested positive for coronavirus consents to upload the last 14 days of contacts, the health department can then alert those contacts via the app itself that they should get tested.

The IDs are deleted from the server after 14 days.

Apple and Google would retain the ability to disable the tech should governments across the world try to alter the purpose of the app.

I would be inclined towards the Google/Apple Trace Together app over some version of the Singaporean app stitched together by the Government and the Signals Directorate.

It seems inevitable that The Trace Together app will receive worldwide scrutiny and as such receive scrutiny at a much greater level than could be expected of an app merely servicing the Australian population alone.

In the end whatever system the government chooses to promote, they need to be clear and transparent with all the details, if they expect a positive response from enough of the public to make this an effective tool.
They're certainly still far from that point at the moment!

Yes really.
- It would have to be someone who actually has the app and had their phone in their possession
- being in the proximity of them doesn't necessarily mean that you have caught COVID-19

Given that not all infected people will have the app and we are already supposed to be behaving as if everyone has the virus, it will be pretty much useless for the average person.

The data it collects though will be priceless. I'm sure the government is already looking to on-sell the data.

I would like to know if someone I had been near to had the virus so I could get tested and take even more safety measures to protect others.

By all accounts, the app is only going to store the phone number of nearby phones where people have the app and bluetooth is turned on.

Hardly world shattering information.

However, it could be useful information to advise potential virus victims to get checked.

Facebook posts better at predicting diabetes, mental health than demographic info

Analyzing language shows that identifying certain groups of words significantly improves upon predicting some medical conditions in patients.

Language in Facebook posts may help identify conditions such as diabetes, anxiety, depression and psychosis in patients, according to a study from Penn Medicine and Stony Brook University researchers. It's believed that language in posts could be indicators of disease and, with patient consent, could be monitored just like physical symptoms. This study was published in PLOS ONE.

"This work is early, but our hope is that the insights gleaned from these posts could be used to better inform patients and providers about their health," said lead author Raina Merchant, MD, MS, the director of Penn Medicine's Center for Digital Health and an associate professor of Emergency Medicine. "As social media posts are often about someone's lifestyle choices and experiences or how they're feeling, this information could provide additional information about disease management and exacerbation."

Using an automated data collection technique, the researchers analyzed the entire Facebook post history of nearly 1,000 patients who agreed to have their electronic medical record data linked to their profiles. The researchers then built three models to analyze their predictive power for the patients: one model only analyzing the Facebook post language, another that used demographics such as age and sex, and the last that combined the two datasets.

Looking into 21 different conditions, researchers found that all 21were predictable from Facebook alone. In fact, 10 of the conditions were better predicted through the use Facebook data instead of demographic information.

Some of the Facebook data that was found to be more predictive than demographic data seemed intuitive. For example, "drink" and "bottle" were shown to be more predictive of alcohol abuse. However, others weren't as easy. For example, the people that most often mentioned religious language like "God" or "pray" in their posts were 15 times more likely to have diabetes than those who used these terms the least. Additionally, words expressing hostility -- like "dumb" and some expletives -- served as indicators of drug abuse and psychoses.

Last year, many members of this research team were able to show that analysis of Facebook posts could predict a diagnosis of depression as much as three months earlier than a diagnosis in the clinic. This work builds on that study and shows that there may be potential for developing an opt-in system for patients that could analyze their social media posts and provide extra information for clinicians to refine care delivery. Merchant said that it's tough to predict how widespread such a system would be, but it "could be valuable" for patients who use social media frequently.

Text is a prevalent form of communication on Facebook. Understanding the various ways text is used on Facebook can help us improve people's experiences with our products, whether we're surfacing more of the content that people want to see or filtering out undesirable content like spam.

With this goal in mind, we built DeepText, a deep learning-based text understanding engine that can understand with near-human accuracy the textual content of several thousands posts per second, spanning more than 20 languages.

DeepText leverages several deep neural network architectures, including convolutional and recurrent neural nets, and can perform word-level and character-level based learning. We use FbLearner Flow and Torch for model training. Trained models are served with a click of a button through the FBLearner Predictor platform, which provides a scalable and reliable model distribution infrastructure. Facebook engineers can easily build new DeepText models through the self-serve architecture that DeepText provides.

It’s the first step of a thousand mile journey.....

Alas we are very much advanced within that journey to loss of liberty.
Anyone think they can’t be traced via their phone?
Or that everything we have said and written is not recorded?
That was proved in a documentary with SA Senator Zen what’s his name
Now that Get Smart dome of silence makes sense!!

And politicians leave their mobile phones in the building, then go outside to talk, out of earshot of the phone!

We were at a intersection, I saw a car across the intersection, I liked the look of it. I asked my ever knowing mechanic hubby what that car was?
He said it’s a Mustang, about 2017.
I asked, how much would it be?
He wasn’t sure, so I said I will google it.

As I picked up my iPhone, I went to type
“How much is a....”

Before I wrote any more .....I saw the option that came up
“2017 Mustang”

😮😮😮😮

That blew me away!

Since then I say to hubby, if we have to discuss anything of privacy we need to remove the iPhone to other end of house and close door!

So that journey of “steps” to convince us about tracing apps in phone ....
We submit to that then the next step will get us in further into that journey.
One by one.

That's scary.
I wonder if the new App which - has Bluetooth on all the time
can open up your phone to malicious exploits from criminals?
Normally you have to press a button to allow a "pairing" of
2 Bluetooth devices.
Does new App pair up without your permission?

Also - having Bluetooth on all the time could drain the battery a lot faster.

I am suspicious of all software.

So, which is it, I wonder?

Government insists coronavirus tracing app will not track people's locations, says data will be stored on phones

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-20/government-insists-coronavirus-tracing-app-wont-track-locations/12163756

And now we have:

Australia's coronavirus tracing app's data storage contract goes offshore to Amazon

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-24/amazon-to-provide-cloud-services-for-coronavirus-tracing-app/12176682

The only certain thing at the moment is that government and modern technology definitely don't mix. I'm sure they don't have a clue what they're doing with this... they're just following what other countries like Singapore are doing.

Just turn on Bluetooth when you're near people and if you're afraid of being hacked which is a reasonable concern, take banking off your phone.

I'll bet cybercriminals everywhere will be rubbing their hands together with glee just waiting for this app to be released.

As soon as it is, people Australia wide will be receiving text messages saying something like "Great news!!! The government's new coronavirus tracking app has just been released, get it NOW!!!" Complete with a convenient download link, of course.

Except that the "convenient" download link will lead to some sort of malware, possibly even a malware infested version of the genuine app itself to prevent it from looking suspicious.

After that, we'll no doubt be hearing about people having their passwords stolen and their bank accounts raided (another reason why I NEVER do banking on my phone) and they'll be thinking "but... but... I thought they said this app was free??"  ::)

The App uses Bluetooth that has to
be on all the time.
That will drain your batteries.
Normally you have to manually accept
another Bluetooth connection
but in this case it's automatic.

I wonder if that opens your phone
to hackers?

We know that the source code is published
so hackers can work out how to take
advantage of it.

We need to know more before installing the App.

Any reply?

Just turn on Bluetooth when you're near people and if you're afraid of being hacked which is a reasonable concern, take banking off your phone.

You don't understand.

Bluetooth is automatically turned on
by the App and it automatically accepts
a pairing with another App of the same type.

You as the user are out of the loop.

Bobby, you can't say that until you've seen the app.

The way it will work, just as with other apps that use Bluetooth is when you turn on/enable the app, it will turn prompt you to turn on Bluetooth.

You can still manually disable Bluetooth whenever you like. It may prompt you to turn BT back on.

Remember, it doesn't track your location, only your proximity to other people with the app and you won't need to use your real name to log in.

Some info on the app ....

COVIDSafe privacy policy

he Australian Department of Health, with the support of the Digital Transformation Agency in its role as the COVIDSafe IT service provider, (we, us, our) is implementing COVIDSafe to help States and Territory health officials (health officials) conduct contact tracing to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Contact tracing is a fundamental element of a public health response to disease outbreak. It is the process of identifying people who may have come into contact with someone who has COVID-19, so that they can be advised to take measures to help stop the further spread of COVID-19 (such as getting tested or self-isolating).

This privacy policy sets out how personal information that is collected via COVIDSafe will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 and the Biosecurity (Human Biosecurity Emergency) (Human Coronavirus with Pandemic Potential) (Emergency Requirements—Public Health Contact Information) Determination 2020 (Biosecurity Determination).

What personal information will be collected, and why is it being collected?

We collect personal information to help conduct contact tracing when you register for, use or upload, data to COVIDSafe.

When you register for COVIDSafe

We will ask you to consent to the collection of your:

mobile phone number – so that you can be contacted if needed for contact tracing
name – so the relevant health officials can confirm they are speaking to the right person when performing contact tracing. This will be easiest if you provide your full name, but you can use a pseudonym or fake name if you prefer
age range– so health officials can prioritise cases for contact tracing, if needed
postcode –to make sure health officials from the right State or Territory who work in your area can contact you, and to prioritise cases for contact tracing, e.g. hotspot areas

If you are under 16 years of age, your parent or guardian will need to consent to the collection of your registration information and contact data.

When you use COVIDSafe

Your app will only record the following contact data: (1) the encrypted user ID, (2) date and time of contact and (3) Bluetooth signal strength of other COVIDSafe users with which you come into contact. This information will also be recorded on the other users’ devices.

An encrypted user ID will be created every 2 hours. This will be logged in the National COVIDSafe data store (data store), operated by the Digital Transformation Agency, in case you need to be identified for contact tracing.

No location data (data that could be used to track your movements) will be collected at any time. No user will be able to see the contact data stored on their device as it will be encrypted. Any attempt to decrypt contact data is an offence. Contact data stored on a device will be automatically deleted after 21 days.

We cannot access any contact data stored on a device, or share this with health officials, unless and until a COVIDSafe user consents to upload the data to the data store.

If you test positive to COVID-19

A health official will contact you and ask for consent to enter your mobile number into the data store to generate a PIN to be sent to you by SMS.

If you enter the PIN, you will give your consent to upload contact data on your device into the data store to share with health officials to enable contact tracing.

If another user tests positive to COVID-19, they may upload their contact data, which may include details of their contact with you.

How will personal information be collected?

Use of COVIDSafe is completely voluntary. You can install or delete COVIDSafe at any time.

As part of your use of COVIDSafe, we will collect:

your registration information after you successfully enter a PIN sent by SMS
information about your encrypted user ID when you have COVIDSafe open or running on your device
information that you have tested positive to COVID-19 when you agree to a health official sending you an SMS to enable you to upload your contact data
your contact data, when you or another COVIDSafe user you have come into contact with tests positive to COVID-19 and chooses to upload contact data on their device
No user should feel pressured to install or continue to use COVIDSafe, or to agree to upload contact data to the data store. This is prohibited under the Biosecurity Determination. If you feel pressured to do any of these things, you can make a complaint to us (see below), the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, or the Australian Human Rights Commission.

How will personal information be stored?

We will store all registration information, encrypted user IDs and contact data, in the data store. It is a cloud-based facility, using infrastructure located in Australia, which has been classified as appropriate for storage of data up to the ‘protected’ security level.

We will delete all data in the data store after the COVID-19 pandemic has concluded as required by the Biosecurity Determination.

Contact data on your device will be automatically deleted from your device 21 days after contact occurs. It will also be deleted if you remove COVIDSafe from your device or upload your contact data to the data store.

Continued ...

Title: Re: Will you get the tracking app?
Post by Captain Nemo on Apr 26th, 2020 at 1:44pm
How will personal information be used and disclosed?

We will use or disclose your personal information to enable contact tracing by health officials. This includes:

using your mobile number to send you an SMS to confirm your number or upload your contact data
using encrypted user IDs in uploaded contact data to identify other COVIDSafe users that a positive COVIDSafe user had contact with in the last 21 days (contact users)
providing health officials with access to the registration information and contact data of contact users to enable contact tracing
Contact users may be advised to take such measures as are required by their State or Territory (such as self-isolating). Failure to comply with these measures may be in breach of State or Territory law.

We will also use or disclose your personal information to:

ensure the proper and lawful functioning of COVIDSafe
if it is necessary, prosecute a breach of the law in relation to contact tracing under the Biosecurity Determination and the Biosecurity Act 2015
We will not use or disclose your personal information for any other purpose.

Data about generation of encrypted user IDs to create de-identified reports about uptake of COVIDSafe will be prepared by the Digital Transformation Agency. We will also receive de-identified analytical data from iTunes and Google Play about COVIDSafe including the number of downloads, average use time and deletions.

Can personal information be deleted?

We will delete any of your personal information held in the data store when you make a request via Health web request form.

You can also uninstall COVIDSafe at any time. This will automatically delete all information stored on your device and stop other users from collecting your contact data.

Uninstalling COVIDSafe will not automatically delete any information already uploaded to the data store, or any of your contact data stored on another user’s device in the last 21 days, which could still be uploaded to the data store and used for contact tracing purposes. If you wish any of your contact data uploaded to the data store to be deleted you can expressly ask us to delete your information.

Can a user correct or access personal information?

You can:

change your registration information by deleting and re-installing COVIDSafe
delete the registration information we hold in the data store by contacting us
register the correct information on COVIDSafe
To ensure maximum security of your COVIDSafe data, you will not be able to access your data held in the data store.

Hee hee ... this is good:

I'm a COVID tracing app convert (Barnaby, you brought me to my senses)

Peter FitzSimons
April 26, 2020 — 12.00am

It was one of those things, I am afraid. Of course I was opposed to the whole idea of the tracing app to help the government determine who we might have been in close contact with, should we get the coronavirus. I just didn’t like the sound of it. But then two things happened.

First, Barnaby Joyce came out vehemently against it. Given that a fair guide on most matters of politics is that Barnaby is usually so wrong it takes your breath away – climate change, marriage equality, water rights, the monarchy – it gave me pause. Second, I thought about it for longer than 30 freaking seconds!

I found myself on the same side of a debate as Barnaby Joyce. It gave me pause. CREDIT:TWITTER/BARNABY JOYCE

Why not do this?

The system is dead simple. When the app comes out, you and I download it on to our phone for free. Thereafter, if you and I spend more than 15 minutes within 1.5 metres of each other, and one of us then tests positive to coronavirus, we are immediately notified. It is not a magic cure-all, but it gives Australia another small baseball bat which we can swing to help flatten the beast and . . . And what?

You still don’t like the world knowing that much about you? For starters, this is not about you, it’s about us, and this will be good for us.

And Google, for one, already knows! When I get in my car, my iPhone already tells me precisely how long it will take me to get to usual spots of my life at that time of day, which must be the tip of the info about me already stored somewhere. Good luck to them.

But you don’t trust the government, you say? Get over it! So far the nation’s achievement in flattening the curve has been due to a great partnership between the government and the people. Can’t we the people treat the government on this in a collegiate, not adversarial, manner? Lives may well depend on it.

Oh, do stop your whinging. I get your opposition if your first name is Carlos, your middle name is The, and your last name is Jackal. But for the rest of us, why the hell not?

Australian Medical Association encourages public to download contact tracing app

By Rachel Clun

Australia’s peak medical organisation has put its support behind the government’s contact tracing app, saying it was an important tool in reducing community spread of COVID-19.

Australian Medical Association president Tony Bartone saying he will download it himself and encourage patients, friends and family to do the same.

“The app simply automates a significant component of the current manual process of tracing who has come into contact with COVID-19,” he said.

Dr Bartone said the app, which goes live this evening would speed up the currently laborious manual contact tracing effort.

He said that would then enable health authorities to quickly respond to any new hotspots.

“This is crucially important in giving us all confidence in managing our exit from the current restrictions,” he said.

“We hope Australians will choose to get behind this app so that we can continue to fight COVID-19 and give people some more freedom to get on with their day to day lives.”

Might want to keep a close eye on this part because there was a letter in yesterday's Sunday Times here in Perth where someone was suggesting that when entertainment venues (pubs, clubs, cinemas, etc.) eventually reopen, people should only be allowed inside if they have this app installed and running on their phones.

Because, I'm sure that a lot of people who read the letter yesterday will be busy right now spreading it around Australia on social media. ::)

The app works well and is unobtrusive on the phone and is easy to flick on and off when you're closer to people.

When you restart the phone it doesn't launch automatically which is nice and when you turn off BT it doesn't nag you, but the status changes to this.

but people dont want to be free autonomous beings, responsible for creating their own path forward in life.

they want to live a life of zero responsibility and always have an authority figure to call upon (and blame).

we start this in our schools.

any problem and you have to run off to an authority figure to fix it.
and the cycle continues.
any problme and there has to bea government department to remedy it and to take the blame if it isnt remedied.

so, those same people cant be saying they dont want to submit, they want to live free.

if they do, fine.

So in other words even if people have downloaded the app their is no guarantee that they have it on and it's working

Well, yeah ... the app needs to be running. I suppose they can never account for the levels of stupidity out there in the real world.

Mine kept saying 'invalid phone #'. I think I had it right.
It starts off with the +61 prefix, so you put in your Mob # leaving off the 0 at the beginning.
Is that right?
Maybe the site is busy.

Drat - I tried a 0, it still did not recognise it.

If it already shows the +61 prefix then you should put the 0 in at the beginning (0412987654 as an example).

You probably shouldn't put any gaps between the digits either (e.g. 0412 987 654) when you enter the number.

For android, I doubt an app can force you to keep BT on (block you form your settings)

They want to make the app as unobtrusive as possible and allow people to choose when they use it.

If they did stuff like force it to launch at startup and constantly nag you to turn on BT people would uninstall it.

As much as I want to help and be part of the effort, if the app raped my phone I'd get rid of it.

The whole point of the app, Aussie, is to assist with contact tracing so restrictions can be lifted and then things can start to get back to normal.

If you're on public transport then you test positive the next day, good luck finding the guy behind you with the red shirt and black backpack.

Apparently, there's a problem for some people when they try to enter their mobile phone numbers.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/covidsafe-australias-new-trace-tracking-app-is-now-live-but-registration-isnt/

Quote:
Users are then asked to enter their full name, age range, and postcode. The next step is entering a mobile number to receive a PIN.

Upon attempting to complete this step, some users have been shown an error message.

"Error verifying phone number. Please check your details and try again," the message on iOS reads.

For Android users, app reviewers mentioned their respective phone numbers were also invalid.

Have to expect a few bugs to start with.

They'll get it right eventually.

Hey, Turn Bluetooth Off When You're Not Using It
In light of the latest Bluetooth-related security meltdown, a friendly PSA.

Minimizing your Bluetooth usage minimizes your exposure to very real vulnerabilities. That includes an attack called BlueBorne, announced this week by the security firm Armis, which would allow any affected device with Bluetooth turned on to be attacked through a series of vulnerabilities. The flaws aren't in the Bluetooth standard itself, but in its implementation in all sorts of software. Windows, Android, Linux, and iOS have been vulnerable to BlueBorne in the past. Millions could still be at risk.

This highlights a major problem with this COVIDsafe app - in the case of my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone, it hasn't had any security updates for nearly 3 years so there's no way I am going to leave Bluetooth enabled for any length of time.

Lack of updates is also why I never have my phone connected to the Internet and also have mobile data turned off. It is also prepaid which would cause my credit to be eaten away rapidly if it was connected to the Internet with mobile data.

And, they can forget about me buying a new phone like a lot of people do every year. I'll keep running my S5 until it dies, thank you.

I thought I read somewhere a couple of years back that something was going to be done about Android devices (especially Samsung) being 'abandoned' regarding security updates after about 12 months from when they're released but, as usual, nothing seems to have happened so far.

And, I see it didn't take long for the BS to start:

Just waiting for the 'special' malware infested version of this app to be released now. Won't be too far off, I'm sure.

I'll download it just in case I'm asymptomatically positive I'd like for my contacts to be traced, and vica versa.

If there's good legislation around it where the info can never be used for the prosecution of any crime or offense and the data is flushed when this health emergency ends, all gud.

We have good legislation that says people shouldn't speed on our roads.

How's that working out?

Any other laws broken in Australia today?

I'm curious.

Uh-oh.

Australian Government coronavirus tracing app data held by Amazon may not be protected from US subpoena

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-28/covidsafe-tracing-app-data-may-not-be-protected-from-usa/12189372

Quote:
Global tech giant Amazon may not be able to protect Australian Government data held in its Australian servers — including data gathered by the COVID-19 tracing app released on Sunday — from US subpoenas, according to legal experts and crossbenchers.

Quote:
The data created by the tracing app will be encrypted, stored on your phone, and not shared with anyone, unless you test positive to COVID-19.

If that happens, health officials may ask — but cannot compel you — to upload 21 days of your data. If you do, it is at that point your data will be sent to the Amazon cloud.

It is only then that the US Government could use the CLOUD Act to compel Amazon to hand over data.

I was actually thinking about downloading this app and trying it out even though I said last week that I wouldn't. Might wait a bit longer after reading this.

Yep the US government would love to know:

Your name ... could be false.

Age range ... could be false.

Postcode ... what the heck is that? (We only know zip)  ;)

Phone numbers of people who were near you for 15 mins or more who also have the app running. - no GPS co-ordinates included.

Real useful stuff!  ;D

Amazon is running the app for govco.

And we all know we can trust Amazon, don't We?

Didn't they get in a bit of bother a while ago because of data mining?

Oh well, they have learnt their lesson and the grubberment will keep them honest.

Thanks, Sprint.

I've now reconsidered and decided to download and install the app. Only took a couple of minutes and it is running fine. Samsung Galaxy S5 with Android 6.0.1.

I'm not worried now about having Bluetooth enabled all the time on the phone even though it hasn't had any security updates for 3 years, I don't keep anything important on the phone or do any banking, etc. with it and I don't have the phone connected to the Internet. I just had to briefly connect the phone to my home wireless to download and install the app. Might have to do that daily to check for any updates to the app.

The main reason is that I'm also having medical issues of my own at the moment (found out today) and if this app helps with the tracking of COVID-19 and saves lives then its a good thing.

Can't change my vote because the poll has closed.
