Yes because scumo didn't want to pay goat beard Bransom his 15 million dollar a year pound of flesh to use the silly Virgin name and rightfully so. Also Virgin is majority foreign owned and we do not need another repeat of the Ford and Holden rent-a-job fiasco !!

If The Govt. bails out Virgin then they have to bail
out 10,s of 1000s of other businesses.

Yes and they should only be if they are at least 90% Australian owned !

Lets face it they are not even bailing out foreign students and telling them to go home ! Why should it be different for foreign owned businesses ??

Sure will.

No more $270 fares from Perth to Melbourne.

It'll be more like $500 one way, and about $700 one way to Sydney.

The Govt should give them money in exchange for equity.
Virgin was well on the mend after their rebrand.

I heard calculations that if Virgin folds, QaintArse will increase fares to the extent it will cost the tourism industry 50b over 10 years.

I'm talking the cheapest fares available.

I used to be able to get $269 to Melbourne, and $349 to Sydney (one way).

Those days are long gone.

All well run airlines will be burning their cash reserves fast.
Bad ones will go under. Not much spare cash to go around.
Maybe Singapore ?

I hope the Govt steps in, Virgin is a decent company.

Virgin Australia is 100% foreign owned.

40% is  2 Chinese companies at 20% each.

Bransons Virgin own only 10%.

The rest is -

Etihad Airways 21%

Singapore Airlines 20%

Free Float is 9%

What we don't need is Virgin Australia to become 90-100% Chinese owned.

Australia will have another Airline exploit the niche left by Virgin. Just another brand that didn't cost Australian Taxpayers a bail-out fortune.

Jobs? Well, I guess Australia is good enough to make its own new businesses that are more Essential and more efficient to the new future ahead where Economic crashes might be common.

Your ignorance is truly astounding.

Domestic tourism will be extremely high on the list of priorities once we get back to something resembling "normal".

People will want to stretch their legs.

If there's only one airline operating, they'll double their pre-covid prices.

Triple, even.

That will discourage a lot of people, and people who rely on the tourist dollar will continue to suffer.

Scotty from Marketing needs to do something, and he needs to act fast.

Branson, Etihad and Singapore Airlines own over half of it, if they want to save it they should pay for it.

ScoMo should not bail out this foreign owned company with taxpayers money.

Qantas shares will probably go lower might be a good time to buy some when state borders are opened again.

Who the bloody hell cares!?  ::)

Tourism makes up a huge amount of our economy.

The problem is that we might not have any tourists for 2 years or more.

Domestic tourism is worth $63 billion a year.

If Virgin isn't saved, that figure will probably become $6 million.

We can't have tourism until there's a working vaccine.

Domestic tourism, Bobby.

Domestic tourism will open up again in the next couple of months.

But, if Qantas are raping our arses, people aren't gonna travel.

Scotty from Marketing needs to act, and he needs to act now.

We need international tourism.
Our standard of living and ability to pay back
our enormous debt will be impossible without it.

We could end up as a banana republic
with 3rd world standards.

With Scotty from Marketing at the helm, that's very likely.

Companies think ScoMo will fork out the money like the ALP caved to every company for their 'redundancy' payment hand-outs.  ::)

Survival of the fittest. Maybe if Virgin's CEO's and Top Managers didn't take all the profits for their personal Bonus Packages - Virgin might not have to try and scab money from Taxpayers. Maybe they could survived this grounding period.

Ironic that those Companies and Industries that put contingency plans in place for yet another Economic Crash - are the ones still going great guns.

Sink or Swim. Sure a lot of business will crash, but it will be replaced by those who take the opportunity to provide a Business framework that can survive such Economic crises.
That evolution.

Burn the old down, release the new from it's ashes.

I very much doubt Virgin will be replaced by a Chinese alternative directly. Someone might buy all the Virgin planes and start a 'domestic' business up. The opportunity is there at least now.

Not now. Besides possible Sanctions against them, the Chinese themselves will have a blatant and justified bias against them.
They will have to 'bribe' up big to make much headway back into the International Economic Arena.

I must admit. I've enjoyed watching the 'Old World' crash away into the past - all by a simple 'little' Virus that is as invisible as God.
I look forward to a better world made so by a Virus that has shaped and molded us.
It may hopefully cure us of over-population and over-indulgence.

I was reading that Virgin was 55 Billion in debt..(I think it was)

This didn’t happen over night..

They have not paid tax in Australia for at least 7 years...

Why not?

QLD and NSW (i think) were offering them Hundreds of millions of Tax payers dollars 💵.. they still folded..

The company is owned by Billionaires and Foreign Governments..

Why didn’t they put their hands in their pockets?

How much were the board members siphoning off?

How many other Airlines have folded in Australia?

10, 20? 50?

Scotty from Marketing needs to get onto this ASAP.

Without Virgin, tourism is gonna suffer badly.

Virgin Australia, where the bloody hell are ya?

There won't be a bailout - it doesn't make any sense for the government to step in now, Virgin is heavily in debt and has no way to recover in the medium term.

Unlike Qantas, a significant proportion of Virgin's fleet is leased, meaning that they're stuck paying out million of $$$ while their fleet is sitting on the ground doing nothing. Propping them up simply means giving money away to lessors whilst foreign-owned shareholders do nothing (and to be fair, no airline has money to prop up virgin right now).

Virgin will be allowed to go into administration, which will enable them to restructure, offload a bunch of debt, reduce their fleet size, probably dump TigerAir and set them up to get back on their feet later.

It's still going to take time though, I think we won't see much action from even a "saved" Virgin until 2021.

Bransons Virgin own only 10%.

The rest is -

Etihad Airways 21%

Singapore Airlines 20%

I had always used either Jetstar or Tiger for all the interstate flights.
Prices very competitive and way cheaper than Virgin.

Last year, flew to Singapore business class on Jetstar.
Was an amazing $800 on special whereas other airlines were double that.

Because without them domestic fares will triple or more, domestic tourism will stall and the economy take that much longer to recover.

Better take a stake in the company and keep it going.
Lol, where do you get this stuff from.

you seen what quantas charges FIFO when flying to or from areas where there is no competition? What makes you think they'd give a poo with other destinations when you have no choice?

you were whinging about $5 for water on the flight, good luck flying if jetstar goes.
Virgin werent competing on most of those routes. Thats always been the issue, not the number of airlines but what routes they were flying. And it QANTAS , not QUANTAS you dufus.

not the sharpest tack are you? Qantas overcharges FIFO because of no competition. Remove Virgin, and they have no competition on most of their routes. No competition and their prices will skyrocket on those routes

We had 2 when our population was half what it is now.

The government is helping Rex which is Aussie owned

Regional Express (also known as Rex) is an Australian airline based in Mascot, New South Wales.[1][2] It operates scheduled regional services.[3] It is Australia's largest regional airline outside the Qantas group of companies and serves New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia. The CCP are bottom feeders. Cause a financial downwards spiral with a bio weapon, then come and buy it all up under desperation, duress, and destitution to the rest of the world.

Very very clever!

For instance, why buy Virgin Airlines as a form of takeover control?

Why not Virgin Airlines (and every other business, big and small) send the CCP an invoice? (like Germany did)
An invoice to be paid for all the financial expense/loss/hardship/psychological damage they, the CCP caused in the first place??

Are we all in this together?

Our government should NOT bail out Virgin Airlines because it is foreign owned.
If our govt want to, they can buy it outright.

Richard Branson doesn’t deserve taxpayers’ money
Tom Bower
Wednesday April 22 2020, 12.01am BST, The Times

Pleading from his sun-kissed Caribbean island for a taxpayer bailout for Virgin Atlantic, Richard Branson must rank as the least deserving tycoon in the Treasury’s long list of casualties asking for financial help. Pledging Necker, the shabby headquarters of his tax exile, as collateral for a £500 million government loan adds insult to injury.
Branson wants a loan from the same tax system he has spent his entire career avoiding. His justification for wanting our money is unimpressive, not least because the loss-making airline is nearly half owned by Delta, an American company.
The British love chancers and over the years Branson has both delighted and appalled millions of people as a self-made entrepreneur who has created and manipulated the Virgin brand through a wily media machine. Throughout a career launching dozens of businesses, including music, mobile phones, trains, health, wine, fashion and banking, his finances have been concealed in offshore tax havens — not only the Caribbean but also in Switzerland, which became the headquarters of his fortune-saving operation to license the Virgin brand.
Until now, the mystery has been whether his businesses are worth the £4 billion he claims and whether he deserved the accolade of Britain’s most successful tycoon. The same smokescreen was vital to his obsessive tax avoidance.
Penetrating the true value of Virgin has always been made impossible by his secrecy. Virgin Health, for instance, has consistently reported losses so no taxes are payable in Britain. Others, like Virgin Galactic, his failed bid since 2004 to send a rocket into space, are also huge loss-makers. Many businesses including Virgin Trains relied on securing government licences or monopolies by controversial methods.
Now he has hit the moment of truth. To rank alongside genuine tycoons such as Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk who have built proper rockets, Branson has always exaggerated his wealth. But it’s been mostly a hand-to-mouth illusion. The reality of Virgin Atlantic’s creation and survival has been nasty. Built out of a pernicious battle with BA and the humiliation of its then chairman Lord King, Virgin Atlantic has only survived because of its guaranteed privileges at Heathrow. Without the landing slots, the airline would be worthless.
Asking for a taxpayer bailout of a loss-making airline is offensive. Let it collapse. There are other British airlines such as Easyjet which could take over. As Branson said not so long ago, “Capitalism has lost its way”. He should rank among the casualties.

Tom Bower is the author of Branson: Behind the Mask

Good, why should our government bail them out?

I hardly used virgin airlines either interstate or overseas, their prices were never competitively priced well enough.

Any wonder they struggled to keep afloat of financial debt? Or just bad management?

Virgin flights were always more expensive than tiger and Jetstar.
Years ago I flew with virgin, I liked their flights and service, but when comparing costs at later stages, for instance, Tiger or Jetstar would be $89 from Melbourne to the Gold Coast, Virgin would be $149

See the difference that makes for decisions of which flight to book?

In fact, last flight I did earlier this year to Gold Coast with Tiger airways was $69 🤗

so that you don't have to pay $1200+ to fly Melbourne to Gold Coast ;)

Virgin was giving flights below cost  - dummy.
That's why they owe $5 billion.

The dummy is the person who doesn't understand the question being answered. ie: YOU

They would have traded their way out of it.

besides, What do I care about their profit? I don't see them worrying about my profits.

You dummy  -
