"Three dead amid respiratory illness outbreak in Springfield"

A semblance of normalcy has returned to the Greenspring Retirement Community more than two weeks after an outbreak of respiratory illnesses struck the senior living facility, putting 23 people in the hospital and possibly contributing to three deaths.

All of the residents hospitalized for respiratory symptoms have now returned to Greenspring, and no new cases have been reported for several days, Erickson Living regional communications manager Courtney Benhoff told the Fairfax County Times on Tuesday.

The majority of residents that were being monitored are no longer showing signs of illness, and most Greenspring employees have returned to work.

Greenspring is one of three retirement communities that Erickson Living developed and manages in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

“At Greenspring, there is nothing that is more important to us than the health and well-being of those who live and work on campus,” the Greenspring team said in a statement provided by Benhoff. “According to the Fairfax County Health Department, the community has instituted all appropriate preventative measures to stop further illnesses and those actions are having a positive result.”

Greenspring reported to the Fairfax County Health Department earlier this month that 54 out of the 263 residents in its Garden Ridge long-term care facility had fallen ill with respiratory symptoms that ranged from coughing to pneumonia.

The health department announced on July 11 that it was conducting an outbreak investigation at Greenspring, which has a 58-acre campus in Springfield that offers assisted living and skilled nursing care through Garden Ridge as well as apartment homes for independent living.

At that point, 18 individuals had been hospitalized, two of whom died. Both of the people who died were hospitalized with pneumonia and dealt with complex medical problems that made it difficult for the health department to determine how much the pneumonia contributed to their deaths.

The health department reported on July 16 that a third person had died in connection with the outbreak, though that individual also had other medical conditions.

“The Health Department does not know the full medical history and the extent to which the respiratory illness contributed to the deaths,” Fairfax County Health Department communications director John Silcox said.

At that point, the number of residents affected by the illness had increased to 63 individuals, and 19 Greenspring employees also reported experiencing respiratory difficulties since the outbreak began on June 30.

Working with the county health department along with the Virginia Department of Health, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tested 17 samples taken from ill residents, but as of July 19, the agency had not been able to identify a specific cause for the sudden uptick in respiratory illness from either that initial testing or additional laboratory testing.

CDC test results uncovered several bacteria known to “colonize” the nose and throat but may not be the cause of infection, and several specimens tested positive rhinovirus, the respiratory virus most frequently found in humans and the main source of the common cold, according to the Fairfax County Health Department.

The outbreak was confined to the Garden Ridge facility, as Greenspring’s independent living section, which houses approximately 1,700 residents, did not see levels of illness considered unusual or unexpected for a fairly large community of older residents.

The county began investigating reports of a similar outbreak at the Heatherwood assisted living facility in Burke on July 17, but the health department found no evidence that the illnesses seen at Heatherwood was connected to the situation at Greenspring.

The department stated on July 18 that most of the ill Heatherwood residents had recovered.

“During the publicity surrounding the Greenspring outbreak investigation, staff at Heatherwood proactively reached out to the Health Department to request guidance for ensuring the safety and health of the residents within their assisted-living facility,” the health department said. “…The facility has been working very closely with the Health Department to ensure that their infection control measures reflect the Health Department’s current best practices.”

The Fairfax County Health Department also worked with Greenspring to implement measures designed to prevent the infections from spreading further.

Infection control measures instituted by Greenspring include a temporary suspension of group activities, screenings of residents for signs of illness, and additional cleaning.

Greenspring also instructed independent living residents to not visit Garden Ridge and enhanced surveillance for illness in the independent living areas “out of an abundance of caution,” Fairfax County says.

“We greatly value our partnership with the county health department and continue to work closely together to take all of the actions needed to safeguard the health of our community,” Benhoff said.

Pneumonia cases linked to vaping are still rising. And federal officials don’t know what’s causing them

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a rising number of cases of mysterious pneumonias linked to vaping on Friday. Now, the agency reports 450 people from 33 states and one U.S. jurisdiction have been affected.

Three deaths have been confirmed, authorities said, and another is being investigated.

The New England Journal of Medicine and CDC’s online journal, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report coordinated the release of case reports and case findings from Illinois and Wisconsin, Utah, North Carolina and California. While the descriptions of the cases were remarkably similar, it is not currently clear why young vapers — the majority of cases are young men — are developing severe pneumonias.

Many of the people who developed the respiratory illness — which in some cases requires days of mechanical ventilation — admitted to vaping tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the main active ingredient in cannabis. Others said they vaped THC and nicotine while some said they only used nicotine products with their e-cigarettes.

Mitch Zeller, director of the Food and Drug Administration’s center for tobacco products, said FDA labs have been testing samples of vaping products collected by state health departments in their investigations of cases.

The FDA currently has 120 samples it is testing, looking for pesticides, toxins, poisons, cutting agents and additives as well as other chemicals, Zeller said. But so far there is no evident answer.

“The samples we’re evaluating show a mix of results and no one substance or compound, including vitamin E acetate, has been identified in all of the samples tested, Zeller said.

The illness has been described as a lipoid pneumonia, with lipids — fats — in the lungs. But Dr. Dana Meaney-Delman, CDC’s incident manager for the outbreak, warned that it’s too soon to know if the lipids are a reliable clue.

She also noted that it is currently unclear whether these illnesses represent something new, or a health risk that has been newly recognized.

Reports of similar pneumonias among e-cigarette users have not come from other countries at this point. A CDC spokeswoman said that the agency has reached out to partner organizations, including the Public Health Agency of Canada, to ask if they are seeing similar cases. “At this time we’re not aware of any cases outside of the United States. However we are sharing information with international partners in the event that cases have gone unrecognized,” she said.

While investigations are underway, both the CDC and the FDA urged people to stop vaping. People who intend to continue to vape should buy their products from reliable stores, they said, and refrain from mixing products.

I know you'd like to drive this thread into a schoolyard stoush (you'll have to look that word up to understand its colloquial meaning)...

I'm of European descent (of three regions in particular)...

Taiwan doesn't need to pay me a cent.. I'm not sure I've ever met someone from Taiwan... But then I've never gone out of my way to meet Taiwanese people... Nothing personal towards the Taiwanese... I haven't met anyone from, say, Peru either, that I know of...

Here's a thought... Had Taiwan been in a position to warn the world in late December 2019 or very early January 2020, as they tried to do, the world would not be in this position...

The global community owes Taiwan recognition for having proved itself worthy of our greatest respect... In fact all democracies have a moral obligation to recognise and praise Taiwan's efforts to try to protect us all.

Much less and far worse can be said of the CCP towards its own people and the world.

You can look at the issue this way. At the time, no test no case! right? Apart from China, who actually tested it? USA, only test the ppl traveled to China even in March. The big issue was you wanna test you need to pay about $3000 at the time. Then who wanna to spend that much money to test?

Had Taiwan been in a position to warn the world in late December 2019 or very early January 2020, as they tried to do, the world would not be in this position... You want my opinion?

1. I do not believe that the virus was engineered at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and then unleashed on the citizens of Wuhan by the CCP. It doesn't add up... If they had engineered a bio-weapon like that, they'd (a) need a vaccine to protect themselves and (b) they'd be much more likely to have released it in some remote western Muslim province of China (given how much the CCP despise them)...

2. It is possible that lax bio-security at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where they were studying bat corona viruses, caused a human infection that went unnoticed until December 2019... (Why study viruses in bats? Because they are often carriers of corona viruses but seldom are affected by them)...

3. It is possible that it came from bats, then pangolins, then humans via a wet market...

The only thing that makes me tend towards point 2 above is that the CCP (albeit begrudgingly) acknowledge point 3 as the sole and likely source of the virus...

Belleville Mayor Michael Melham said he has tested positive for coronavirus antibodies, adding that he believes he was sick with the virus in November — more than a month before doctors in China first reported cases of the new disease.

Melham said he was sick toward the end of November and suffered from chills, hallucinations and a "skyrocketing temperature" after he left the League of Municipalities Conference in Atlantic City.

"It felt as if I was an addict going through withdrawal," Melham said in a press release. "I didn’t know what was happening to me. I never felt that I could be so sick."

The first known case of the coronavirus in the United States was in January and involved a West Coast man who had been in China's Wuhan Province. Health experts now say the coronavirus may have been quietly circulating in the United States in January and February, when testing was rare. None have pushed the timeline back as far as November, however.

In a text message to NorthJersey.com and the USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey, Melham said it was the sickest he had ever been in his adult life.

The doctor told Melham he had the flu and that he would get better after rest and fluids, the release said. He did not take a flu test and said he did not travel overseas.

Melham said he later suspected he had contracted the coronavirus in November but dismissed the notion because the earliest cases in the United States weren't reported until January. His November illness is what prompted Melham to ask his doctor for the blood test. He got the results Wednesday.

For me, I'd cancel that for safety. So far it doesn't look like America would bring it under control by end of July.
