A collection of irons.

At the back is a tailors’ iron—about 5Kg of iron, nothing else.

The redhandled iron and the one next to it are “all day irons” because instead of heating the iron in the fireplace (nice job on an Australian summer day!) there is an alcohol burner in the iron keeping it hot—note how each has a metho tank at the back of the iron.

In front of the redhandled iron is a small iron that is curved not flat! It was for ironing around collars and cuffs, it would bounce over lace where an ordinary flat iron would plow into the lace and damage it. This little iron would be heated in or over a fire.

You can see a little iron trivet to rest the iron on.

At the front is a mid 20th century (probably, some research to do) electric iron and behind that a brass iron with a lid that can be unlatched, moved up and a shovel full of coals poured in, the lid lowered and fastened again.

Apart from the yellow iron these are all pre-electricity so 1800s to maybe 1940s—electricity did not arrive everywhere at the same time.




Was in Strathalbyn today, saw a “chimney iron.” No, not for ironing chimneys  ;D it is one of the type filled with hot coals, a hinged cover at the front could be opened to provide a draught and the smoke from the burning coals would come out the chimney. The chimney meant the smoke from the coals did not reach the clothes so the clothes being ironed did not pick up a smell from the smoke from the coals. Possibly the coals could be coaxed back to life by opening the little hatch causing a draught to go through the coals.

I intend to display these with a spot for “21st century iron” which of course would be kept empty. Ironing, who does that these days?

I blogged about my hip replacement operation, tweeted about it—quite a few people said it helped with their experience. It is a major operation for sure. I was lucky—one leg is just 1mm longer than the other, worse happens, some need to wear special boots with up to 25mm difference in leg length.

Critters and Gardens is fine, will add more info to the native bird attracting garden in the next day or two. Have you looked at the peregrine falcon hatchlings?

One of the irons I think is not antique or vintage but a modern day iron used by street vendors in Asia to press people’s clothes—there will be a brazier with hot coals at the back of the stall. But I have a “chimney” iron put aside for me, will buy that next weekend.

As I said, I love studying the onward march of technology. Between the 18th and 19th century there is a jump in technology:

• 18th century beer was Porter, a half-industrial beer. Porters were strong and strong flavored with smoky notes. Only the big landowners could afford pale malt.

• 19th century coal was burned in the absence of oxygen to get “town gas” and turpentine etc. What was left, coke, had no volatiles and burned cleanly and steadily, no smells and no off flavors, all burned off in the coke making process. The 19th century beer was pale ale, India Pale Ale the iconic style (tho it lasted at most 2-3 decades.)

• Porcelain and fine china, using coke there was no “kiln dust” to put black spots on porcelain.

How much did the Napoleonic Wars contribute to the pace of technological development? Had to have boosted the pace of technological improvement, wars always do.

So that's what you take from this? Even though you have been throwing your "power" around since you were elected mod of C&C? Not that it was in the wrong place? I'd expect that, much like Arsie, you can never be wrong. The iron is a tool more than it is a women's issue, that's why it's now in the tool shed, I guess I would have left in Tech if you started it there.

Ironing is not a "women's" issue no matter what they did in the past. It'd be like starting a thread about nursing in the "women's issue" MRB. We do not live in the 18th century like you. I ironed clothes with my mum when I was a kid, I'm male, my sister did not. I'm sure in the 18th century they had sweatshops full of kids doing it. And yeah, sure it was women's work for a while. That does not mean a thread about irons and ironing belongs in "Women's Issues" as I'm pretty sure it's not much an issue any more.

Not really but as they continually bad mouth other mods and myself, surely learning their ways will make me a good mod. I'll need practice of course, hmmm, now who should I demand an apology from or give a 6 month holiday? Practice makes perfect, I'll be a great mod yet!

Monk asked to speak to whoever was in charge
and Monk was then tricked as he was speaking directly to the doxxed person.
Monk gave some story  that was designed to lose

Yes to that link above, something I learnt of recent months from my lawyer representing me, whilst I do an affidavit, that I can only mention what I saw or heard directly myself.

And if anyone has something to say that someone else told them, it's hearsay and can't be used in court etc.

But in the everyday real world, it's not stopping anyone using hearsay  ;D
