Hi LTYC - Covid has driven the world crazy -

it even caused the storming of the Capitol building in Washington
as Trump would have won without the China virus.

I wonder if Bojack would agree with me on this?
The Virus seems to be gaining strength and intensity like a temperature rising. I think it's just at a 1/4 of its full potential and life-cycle. It won't give up until all of the human system has been infected (except anyone 'isolated' from it's touch for the duration of its course, where without a solid vaccine, they will eventually have to come in contact with it - but hopefully after it has run its course and weakened way down the track).

I would say that the more 'polluted' (filthier) environments and densely populated areas will be hardest hit. But there is a strain in Samerica that is pretty aggressive in its transference in a sparsely populated area of its own accord, though I don't know why?

This is not mid way through the virus nor the end -
it's still at the beginning -
the whole world - every continent is seeded.
This year we'll see what it can really do.

As much as I am proud of our nation prevailing to a great degree. I feel it will be much like Israel in World War Z.
Infected and sick Refugees trying to flee to Australia for safe haven coming in hundreds of boats out of desperation for good Medical care and a Government that will put money before lives in the end, along with Lefties saying we should let them in with a Medical system that just doesn't have the Staff (poor recruitment drive) to prevail or contain anymore.
The recent 'holiday' period showed our complacency - but it was really due to people from Overseas coming in and slipping through the net.

Virus singular? Covid 19 is only one of many to come.
The west is too gutless to draw attention to the warm meat market, not just in China, but in Africa. Or have we all forgotten Ebola came from our species eating warm monkey meat?
The Chinese may have played genetic engineering with Covid but it’s not necessary to do so to infect the entire planet. Just keep selling warm meet at your local market and cooking it medium rare and bingo...............Oh, and tearing down virgin forests isn’t much help either.

There is already a mutant strain of Covid
that is far more contagious -
and it's here in Australia already !

Queensland has it and is now locked down.

Not until 6pm tonight Queensland time.

And, as we've seen with Victoria and New South Wales, people are trying to flee Brisbane in droves now before the lockdown, potentially spreading the virus to other parts of the State.

Traffic chaos as drivers leave Brisbane ahead of 6pm lockdown

https://www.9news.com.au/national/queensland-coronavirus-news-major-delays-on-roads-out-of-brisbane-as-residents-flee-the-city-ahead-of-6pm-lockdown/259d68a9-8b15-457a-bf6d-ad64b1791e9a

Quote:
Drivers on major roads out of Brisbane are experiencing lengthy delays as residents flee the city ahead of the 6pm lockdown.
Traffic has almost been brought to a standstill on the Bruce Highway, as thousands of residents try to make their way to the Sunshine Coast.

And, as usual, we also have the ones who don't care if they spread the virus interstate.

Quote:
Brisbane Airport has also been busy, as travellers rush to get home to beat new border restrictions in other states and territories.

Also...

Quote:
The rush to leave the city comes as the Prime Minister urged residents to "stay where you are".

Too late, as usual.

The world is in a state of 'isolating away from the Virus' as is the case of NZ, Cuba, Australia and some other smaller nations.

Shame we couldn't have 'isolated' the Virus in China from the rest of the world.
China must pay for this and because of the Virus - the CCP will eventually fall (Military/Politics will fall in China).

Oh dear....then there will be no rush for toilet paper!

Honestly, this new UK strain has come into Brisbane from the UK....yet the rest of Oz was shut away from Qld, but not the international travellers with the covid infectious strains, all of them.

Why not just forget about allowing international travellers into Oz in the first place?

Our PM is saying to stay where we are, not to go anywhere, yet...how hypocritical that international travellers are being let in all over the place?

these are aussies trying to return home. The govt. has a duty to help bring them home.

What I don't understand why they bring them into the capital cities. Fly them to Christmas Island (or any of our island resorts that are now shut down due to lack of tourists from covid) and make them do their 14 days there. At least that way if someone is found positive it's contained.

Wtf? :o

Yes the Premier has shutdown QLD for 3 days while they trace it.

Incorrect - the Greater Brisbane area is in a 3 day lockdown from 6pm yesterday/Friday 8th Jan. to Monday 11th Jan.

Stupid thing was they gave the inhabitants about 8 hrs notice ........

and there was a mass exodus with the highways & byways to the north in gridlock as they did a runner before 6 pm.

How that will help a lockdown if many of those fleeing have come from hotspots in the area I don't know....... possibility of spreading it further.

And the panic buying started there and here 3 hrs further up the coast yesterday .... toilet paper shelves in Woolies empty at 11 am.

No one should have been allowed out of the lockdown area.

Honestly, this new UK strain has come into Brisbane from the UK....yet the rest of Oz was shut away from Qld, but not the international travellers with the covid infectious strains, all of them.

Why not just forget about allowing international travellers into Oz in the first place?

A lot of people have been saying the same thing for quite a while now but apparently there's some sort of 'stigma' attached to Christmas Island since it was used to house refugees.

We even had quarantine facilities set up here on Rottnest Island off the coast of Perth for a while last year but that also seems to have stopped and inner city hotels are once again being used.

I believe it may have also had something to do with a lot of these "returned travellers" throwing tantrums about not just having to quarantine for 14 days but also having to pay for their quarantine expenses even when they are given inner city hotel rooms.

I can just imagine the behaviour of some of these self entitled "Karens" if they were required to quarantine somewhere like Christmas Island or even Rottnest.

Case of UK strain flew into Queensland from Melbourne as no new cases recorded

Quote:
She said health authorities had found a woman had flown into the state from Melbourne infected with the UK strain of the virus.
The woman flew in on Jetstar flight JQ570 at 11pm on January 5 after arriving from the UK to Melbourne on Boxing Day.

Quote:
"She got tested in hotel quarantine there on December 27, and she was found to be positive.
"So she was then isolated and did the 10 days required isolation, cleared all her symptoms, and was allowed to leave Victoria and fly to Queensland on January 5.
In spite of being cleared to travel to Queensland, she still tested positive.

Never going to get on top of the virus while this sort of thing keeps happening.

Oh, and...

Quote:
"The risk is extremely low, very, very, very low because she is right at the end of her potential infectious period".

Yeah, we keep hearing about this "low" risk. Been hearing it over and over since the first COVID-19 case flew into Australia late in January last year. Tell it to all the people who have lost their jobs and the owners who have had to close their businesses - some of them permanently.

But there is a strain in Samerica that is pretty aggressive in its transference in a sparsely populated area of its own accord, though I don't know why?

yes but 15 000 deaths is nothing. It's more important that Bias can buy his sandwich without being made to spell his name out. Imagine being asked to do that whilst under pressure of them watching him. What if he got the spelling wrong? Then he'd die of embarrassment. Much better another 15 000 strangers die than that.

They have been averaging about 4,000 a day for a while now. 15,000 in 4 days is a bit on the low side. With Xmas travel, the riots and the more contagious virus strain they would be expecting another bump in the numbers for late this month next month.

Expect it to pass 5,000 a day within a few weeks.

At least two gorillas at San Diego Zoo tested positive for Covid-19, in the first known cases among great apes

By Cheri Mossburg and Leah Asmelash, CNN

Updated 2312 GMT (0712 HKT) January 11, 2021

(CNN)The surge of Covid-19 in California has just gotten even worse, after at least two gorillas at the San Diego Zoo became infected with Covid-19, the zoo and Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday.
Three animals are currently showing symptoms of the virus, and it is suspected that they were infected by an asymptomatic staff member, according to a press release.
This is the first known instance of coronavirus in great apes, the zoo said, though previous research has shown that some non-human primates are susceptible. The gorillas live as a family, so it is assumed that all members have been exposed, zoo officials say.
It started last Wednesday, when two zoo gorillas began coughing. A preliminary test within the group showed presence of the virus on Friday, and the US Department of Agriculture's National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed the positive results Monday.
It is unknown whether the gorillas will have any serious reaction, the zoo said, but they are being closely monitored.

Bobby

I was talking to a phillipino whose family still live in the Philippines.

No one is concerned about covid and it hasn't increased deaths to any extent.

Why?

Because phillipino s are all skinny and they don't have a health system like the west that keeps 85 Yos with diabetes and heart disease alive to " linger"

So this rather weak virus has little effect.

It is the west that has gone against nature , telling morbidly obese people with garbage health they are entitled to gold standard health care forever.

They never should have been told that.

The very old and chronically diseased should not be in ICU .

iICU is for a young person involved in a car accident or who nearly drowns or a newborn baby where they can live a long healthy life.

No 85 yo with several diseases has any prospect of doing that.

We are expecting medicine to do much more than it was ever intended to do

Hi Aqua,
when I was boy -
a very long time ago -
people used to die at the age of say 55
and people would say "that person died of old age."
Even the newspapers would say that.
There were no reasons given such as
coronary artery embolism  etc.
Old age used to kill people.
Now - people are on a dozen medications per day
and they can keep them alive until 85 or 90
but of course they end up for years in nursing homes
unable to move - being taken out of bed and put
into wheel chairs using a crane.
Are we really doing the right thing?

Hi Aqua,
when I was boy -
a very long time ago -
people used to die at the age of say 55
and people would say "that person died of old age."

They are probably living longer because of better diet, less smoking, and better OHS practices in the workforce ;)

Hi Nail,
I reckon it's more about the magic pills that keep people alive.
Only millionaires could afford to smoke now.
A packet of 25 cigarettes is over $50.

Also we have much better dental health care so people don't die of blood poisoning from a tooth abscess which was quite common in the early times !

Nail, I don't think our diet is better.

I think bobby is right.

More and more tablets to keep people alive.
And those tablets make big pharma companies a fortune.

Most of the medications are paid for by the taxpayer.
Most are taken by the old and frail .
Big pharma is a major donor to doctors and governments.
I think that's why a lot of governments are reluctant to pass voluntary euthanasia laws.
It would cost big pharma a fortune.
And now big pharma gets to make 100s of billions by selling vaccines, maybe 6 monthly
And all to protect big pharmas cash cows....the old frail diabetic with heart disease.

And they closed gyms in brisbane because of one case.
But left maccas open
Something is telling me, big money and paid for politicians want to keep the cash cow growing  ;)

https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/scientists-call-for-pause-on-astrazeneca-vaccine-rollout-20210112-p56tjt.html

Scientists call for pause on AstraZeneca vaccine rollout.

The Australian and New Zealand Society for Immunology says the federal government should immediately pause the planned rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine because it may not be effective enough to generate herd immunity.

Phase three clinical trials of the vaccine, which is the centrepiece of Australia's vaccination strategy, show it is only 62 per cent effective in preventing COVID-19 when given in the recommended dose. Trials suggest vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are about 95 per cent effective.

The death rate for Nipah virus
is up to 75% and it has no vaccine.

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210106-nipah-virus-how-bats-could-cause-the-next-pandemic

While the world focuses on Covid-19, scientists are working hard to ensure it doesn't cause the next pandemic.

It was 3 January 2020, and Supaporn Wacharapluesadee was standing by, awaiting a delivery. Word had spread that there was some kind of respiratory disease affecting people in Wuhan, China, and with the Lunar New Year approaching, many Chinese tourists were headed to neighbouring Thailand to celebrate. Cautiously, the Thai government began screening passengers arriving from Wuhan at the airport, and a few select labs – including Wacharapluesadee's – were chosen to process the samples to try to detect the problem.

Wacharapluesadee is an expert virus hunter. She runs the Thai Red Cross Emerging Infectious Disease-Health Science Centre in Bangkok. Over the past 10 years, she's been part of Predict, a worldwide effort to detect and stop diseases that can jump from non-human animals to humans.

She and her team have sampled many species. But their main focus has been on bats, which are known to harbour many coronaviruses.

It marked the second time -- both this month and since the pandemic's start -- that the US reported more than 4,000 Covid-19 deaths in a single day.
Over the past week, the US has averaged more than 3,300 deaths every day, a jump of more than 217% from mid-November.

I hope one of your kids have to wheel you out to the back paddock & put you down with a shot behind the ear.

The article discuses that.

Should we just eradicate bats?

Not unless we want to make things much worse, says Tracey Goldstein, institute director at the One Health Institute Laboratory and lab director of the Predict Project.

Bats play hugely important ecological roles – Tracey Goldstein

"Bats play hugely important ecological roles,” says Goldstein. They pollinate more than 500 plant species. They also help to keep insects in check – playing a hugely important role in disease control in humans by, for example, reducing malaria by eating mosquitoes, says Goldstein.

"They play a hugely important role in human health."

She also points out that culling bats has been shown to be detrimental from a disease perspective. "What a population does when you decrease numbers is to have more babies – that would make [a human] more susceptible. By killing animals you increase the risk, because you increase the number of animals shedding virus," she says.

I dunno... I suspect the average 7 year old these days isn't frightened too easily.

Have a look at this picture from 1968 - I was only 11 years old when it was taken but I'm pretty sure it would have scared the living cr*p out of me if I'd seen it at the time.

The average 7 year old today probably wouldn't even notice it and wouldn't be bothered in the slightest if they did see it.

"Evil Santa" is my best way to describe it... if I were one of those cute little reindeer my first thought would have been "RUN!!!!"  :o

(For all the "Perthites" this picture was the old Bairds store on the corner of William and Murray Streets in the city... now the site of Perth Underground train station).

I believe that most children these days are too busy with their faces glued to their smartphones to be concerned about what goes on around them and their "anxiety" probably only increases if they cannot get their daily 'TwitFace' fix.

And, I'm also fairly certain that most children these days couldn't care less about "authority figures".

very dismissive of the health concerns around children.

the world doesnt totally revolve around the very elderly  ::) ::) ::)

The present study assessed children’s anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to assist healthcare professionals in understanding children´s reports of anxiety. Comprehending children’s emotions was quite challenging, because the situations they experienced may not have characteristics in common with any previous event in their lives. Thus, giving them a voice was an essential strategy.

In the present study, the prevalence of anxiety among children was between 19.4% (n = 56), using the CAQ, and 21.8% (n = 63), using the NRS. Compared to previous research, this study found a high prevalence of anxiety. The worldwide prevalence of any anxiety disorder among children according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) was shown to be 6.5%

They only have fifteen cases, and that will soon be down to zero.

And, before that it was "It's one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It's going to be just fine," :-[/quote]

It was going to be gone by Easter.....
And then it was going to disappear after the election

A few weeks to flatten the curve according to Palachook and other Premiers. Meanwhile, almost 12 months later ...   This is progress.

All the more reason Council authorities should hunt flying fox roosts out of suburban & CBD roosts.

I'm not suggesting eradication or culling.  ::)

They can be moved on out of residential & CBD roosts where they set up by the use of noise to unsettle them.

Councils all over the country are using this strategy to get them to move -much to the annoyance of all the dogooders who obviously don't have them roosting in their backyards.

As the United States’ covid-19 death toll moves relentlessly beyond 200,000, data shows that less then 100  children and teenagers have died of the disease (nearly all with major co-morbidities) , a fatality rate that is drawing wonder from clinicians and increasing interest among researchers hoping to understand why.

Covid-19 has become the nation’s third-leading cause of death this year, but 18 states had not seen a single fatality among people under 20 as of Sept. 10, according to statistics compiled by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association.

Children are much more likely to die of homicides (there were 1,865 in 2016, according to government data), drowning (995) or even fires and burns (340).

The numbers are all the more remarkable because respiratory diseases typically hit the young and the old hard, and children are often highly vulnerable to infectious disease. In this way, covid-19 is similar to the flu, which killed an estimated 24,000 to 62,000 people last winter, but 188 people age 17 and below.

Covid: UK records new daily high of 1,610 deaths

Published

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-55722168

It means the total number of deaths by that measure is now above 90,000.

A total of 4,266,577 people have now received the first dose of a vaccine, according to the latest government figures.

Another 33,355 positive Covid cases have been recorded - less than half the peak figure of 68,053 on 8 January.

It is the lowest number of daily cases seen since 27 December - before the start of England's third nationwide lockdown.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, medical director at Public Health England, said: "Whilst there are some early signs that show our sacrifices are working, we must continue to strictly abide by the measures in place."

She said reducing contact with others and staying at home will lead to "a fall in the number of infections over time".

Covid antibodies in 1 in 10 people in December
Health secretary self-isolating after Covid alert

The figures come as new estimates from the Office for National Statistics show about one in 10 people across the UK tested positive for Covid-19 antibodies in December - roughly double the October figure.

I made a claim that Australia will have no more community transmissions by February this year. Just the occasional covid patient coming in from overseas. But, I also made the claim that we would see about 60,000 cases of covid before the end of the pandemic in Australia.

I still hold out hope that we should be back to normal by March.

Covid-19 was very bad while Florida in the USA was hot.
I'm not sure if this virus is killed so easily by hot weather.

Seems that cold weather only had an impact on Melbourne being the hot spot for covid cases. Other regions in Australia have had near minimal cases of covid until the latter stages of spring. Returning unquarantined overseas travellers to Australia will be what keeps covid19 alive in Australia. Social distancing, hand sanitising and quarantining the sick is what will kill off the virus.

30,000 Australians are now immune to covid19 before a vaccine was available. And the immune systems of anyone without compromised immunity or under the age of 60 means that there is nearly a 100% chance that an acquired case by those who have not had the virus will not only survive but go on to have no lingering effects.

Australian vax to be given by end of March.

They have been saying the start of March 2021 for the last 3 months.
It's always delayed - always more time.
What's wrong with Australia -
the POMs have already immunised millions of people.

ScoMo should resign.

Covid-19 has killed 100,000 people in the UK. Experts say the government is still getting it wrong

By Angela Dewan, CNN

Updated 2257 GMT (0657 HKT) January 26, 2021

London (CNN)In March last year, the UK government said it was hopeful the country could cap its coronavirus deaths at 20,000. It was a bleak target to set, but one the nation came to begrudgingly accept.
Ten months on, Prime Minister Boris Johnson delivered a somber public briefing Tuesday, in which he announced the country could now count more than 100,000 people as its Covid-19 dead, in what he called a "grim statistic."
Of the worst-affected nations, the UK has earned the dishonor of having the highest number of confirmed deaths in the world, proportionate to population.

A surge in case numbers that began in December has pushed hospitals to the brink. ICU workers say they have been forced to "dilute" their care and describe mental health struggles under unprecedented pressure.

you are very ungrateful bobby  on the one hand you complain about people dying..AFTER the vaccine....and because we take more precautions than others here you are calling for his head.... ::) ::) ::)

dear Cods,
there has been extreme mismanagement all around the world.
Right now the UK has the highest death rate in the world
with over 100,000 dead.

So even though their vaccination program is faster than ours
it is still a shocking outcome.

Covid-19 has killed 100,000 people in the UK. Experts say the government is still getting it wrong

ICU workers say they have been forced to "dilute" their care and describe mental health struggles under unprecedented pressure.

really

i think the nurses during the blitz would disagree  ::) ::)

The nurses in 1941 didn't have a segment of the population  and media saying the bombs weren't real, air raid shleters dont work and that its a burden on the economy to have air defences.

oh , so in 2021 they might get their feelings hurt

as opposed to 1941 when they might get a 500 lb bomb delivered to their ward. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

i can see why it is soooooo much more stressful in 2021  ::) ::) ::)

Please address the point.
