I am transferring the site to a different hosting plan. I have put in the request, but I do not know when it will start. There may be some downtime or lost posts. I'll keep you updated here.

Will this affect PA as well? If so I need to give them the heads up.

If you can see this post, you are looking at the new server. Any posts you make now will not get deleted. It looks like we have lost posts made after about 1am.

I can only log in if i turn on my VPN. With my usual IP, i just get the maintenance message.

Title: Re: possible site downtime and lost posts Post by freediver on Feb 1st, 2021 at 8:29pm
I had something similar happen. It seems that the DNS propagation (letting the world know the the site's IP address has changed) varies depending on how you access the internet. So maybe some ISP's don't run updates as often.

Has anyone noticed any change in server performance this week - eg website speed, forum bugs?
|
Title: Re: possible site downtime and lost posts Post by Captain Nemo on Feb 6th, 2021 at 8:40am
I reckon the site has been a little faster.
I did encounter the odd "down for maintenance" message for a brief period. BTW ... was the old hosting site using https? I notice this one is now "not secure". |

In terms a child Martian will understand....what does that mean? I see Monk's Forum also has that 'lock' symbol.
|
Title: Re: possible site downtime and lost posts Post by freediver on Feb 7th, 2021 at 12:39pm
It means the info you send to the site is encrypted, so if someone intercepts it, they cannot do anything with it.
Not sure what info exactly, as when I type in a post chrome tells me that the form is not secure, presumably meaning it sends it to the server as plain text. Presumably your login password is sent as encrypted data rather than plain text. I think the info the site sends to you (web page content) is also encrypted. |

If a website uses a secured comms setting (indicated by the lock ... or https in the address) ... It means that stuff typed here is "encrypted" between your computer and the site, so "hackers" can't easily see what is transmitting between your computer and the site. It makes it a little harder for hackers to mess with things - although not impossible. Edit: Freediver beat me to it. :) |
Title: Re: possible site downtime and lost posts Post by Aussie on Feb 7th, 2021 at 12:44pm
It's all Martian to me. For example, why would anyone want to intercept 'stuff' I somehow 'send' to this Site?

It certainly does, no-one knows who is behind the screen names ideally. If everything sent between the posters computer and your server is encrypted, govt can't peek. They can see you visited a site but not any discourse you may have entered into. For all they know you just read it. Even that can be added to by VPN where all they can see it traffic to your VPN provider. Encryption is good. |

OK, found the issue for Youtube not displaying.
For Edge you need to go to settings and for secure sites, you need to allow insecure content on Ozpol. Screenshot below to help. Also you need to add https://www.polanimal.com/ for those using PA. I assume the same for Chrome since they are built on the same technology. |

The youtube thing is that the original post was make giving http as the link address. People should be able to "choose" to see them I would have thought but I haven't come across the problem myself, feel free to give me a link that shows this. If BO or yourself can post/PM me the error and anything from the log at that time that is relevant, I'll take a look. I don't go there so I have no idea. |

I click on the last post feature and I do not get to read the last post someone wrote, sometimes. Is there some kind of minor error causing this?
