Title: Arms or troop reduction treaties.
Post by Bobby. on Apr 27th, 2021 at 7:38pm
I see the world perched at the start of a new huge war.
It could be over Taiwan or maybe over Iran or
Russia in the Ukraine -
or all of the above?

There is too much money and time spent on weapons in this world.
I don’t like it –
It places all of us in danger and the United Nations
has absolutely failed to slow down the arms race.
The world is armed to the teeth like never before in history.
The weapons flooding the Middle East and also South East Asia
should have caused alarm 20 years ago.
The useless UN and the politicians did nothing –
I am not aware of any arms or troop reduction treaties?

Bobby you raise an interesting point but fail to sheet the blame where it belongs.  You should be attack Trump, not the UN.  Trump dismantled quite a few arms control treaties he disagreed with.   The UN has no power to make nation's agree to any treaty.  All observance has to come from the nation itself.  Trump decided that he didn't agree with being limited, so he scrapped the treaties.   ::) ::)

Come on Brian -
I didn't start this thread up to blame Trump for everything.

Also - it wasn't me who made bad posts on this thread - it was the usual culprits.

The United Nations has to at least speak about this terrible arms race -
it will lead to our destruction if it's not stopped.

The world's attention turns to the South China Sea as Washington sends a number of warships into the geopolitically crucial region in what some observes deem a show of force to Beijing. China considers Taiwan to be integral to its national existence and looks to Washington's continuing overtures to the precarious island country with growing alarm. Meanwhile, a British aircraft carrier and other warships have been dispatched to the Pacific, and others have been deployed to the Black Sea as a show of "solidarity" with Ukraine. RT America's Alex Mihailovich reports for the News with Rick Sanchez.

Britain is sending a huge naval force through some of the most tense waters in Asia

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/04/26/europe/uk-aircraft-carrier-strike-group-asia-intl-hnk-scli-ml/index.html

Updated 0656 GMT (1456 HKT) April 27, 2021

The full UK Carrier Strike Group assembled for the first time during Group Exercise 2020 in October.

The aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth leads a flotilla from the UK, US and the Netherlands.

Hong Kong (CNN)The largest naval flotilla assembled by Britain in recent years will set sail in May on a months' long voyage through the Pacific, the country's Defense Ministry said Monday.
"When our Carrier Strike Group (CSG) sets sail next month, it will be flying the flag for Global Britain -- projecting our influence, signaling our power, engaging with our friends and reaffirming our commitment to addressing the security challenges of today and tomorrow," UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said Monday.

"The UK is not stepping back but sailing forth to play an active role in shaping the international system of the 21st century," Wallace said.

The strike group will be led by the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, marking its maiden deployment. The ship, one of the UK's two aircraft carriers, is the largest warship the UK has ever sent to sea.

Joining the carrier will be two destroyers, two anti-submarine frigates, a submarine and two auxiliary supply ships, a ministry statement said.

A United States Navy guided-missile destroyer will sail with the group as well as a frigate from the Netherlands that will be tasked with air defense, the ministry said.
Air power within the group will be centered on RAF F-35B stealth fighters and US Marine Corps F-35Bs, all of which will fly from the deck of the 65,000-ton aircraft carrier.

Some people don't like the RT America news:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_America

Quote:
RT America is a U.S.-based pay television and internet-based[1] news channel which is part of the RT network, a global multilingual television news network based in Moscow, Russia, funded and controlled by the Russian government.[2][3][4]

The channel is registered as a "foreign agent" with the United States Department of Justice under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). A 2017 report by the United States Intelligence Community characterized RT as "The Kremlin's principal international propaganda outlet" and said that RT America had been set up as an autonomous nonprofit organization to avoid FARA's registration requirement.[5][6] RT America claims that it reaches 85 million people in the United States, but this figure is disputed.

I feel it would be better to argue any points on their merit.

Look at this -
this is what I'm talking about -
no calls by ScoMo for arms or troop reduction treaties -
just more spending - in fact - borrowing of money we don't have for dubious outcomes.

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/04/28/australia/asia-pacific-defense-australia-military-intl-hnk/index.html

Australia will spend $580 million to upgrade four northern military bases and expand war games with the United States, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Wednesday.
In an announcement that comes amid an increasingly bitter diplomatic and trade spat with China, Morrison said Australia must expand its military assets in the Northern Territory to be able respond to unspecified tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.

The funds are part of an Australia defense plan that will see
Canberra spend $270 billion in the next decade
to improve Canberra's long-range strike capabilities.

More talk of war here and no talk of any
arms or troop reduction treaties:

https://www.news.com.au/technology/innovation/military/what-war-between-australia-and-china-could-look-like-if-taiwan-conflict-escalates/news-story/76547d9b2bee3baaf0932cd45a61f68c

What war between Australia and China
could look like if Taiwan conflict escalates

The idea sounds grand – charging forth, flags flying, to save a bullied island friend. But China’s been preparing for this for decades.

Blood, sweat and tears. Is Australia prepared to pay the price to defend its friend Taiwan from China? And what would such a fight look like?

The vision is not a new one: White knights charging forth, flags flying, to save friends from a bellowing dragon. But China’s been preparing to take – and hold – Taiwan by force for decades. It has just about every contingency covered. And the West may not be able to do much about it.

Washington and Beijing are locked in an intense strategic battle.

The feud over the reigns of global influence is playing out in Southeast Asia. And the protagonists are testing each other’s resolve on an almost daily basis.

All it would take is one wrong move. One accident. One real threat mistaken for a bluff.

And, if a shooting war does break out, the US and its allies are not guaranteed a win.

“We cannot lose a single inch of the lands we inherited from our ancestors,” the Chinese Defense Ministry’s Information Bureau recently proclaimed, “and we would not take a single cent of others’ possessions.”

China tells Australia to abandon its 'Cold War mentality' while criticising our politicians

Posted 6 hours ago, updated 8 minutes ago.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-29/china-warns-australia-over-old-war-mentality/100102896

China has criticised Australian politicians for making remarks that "instigate confrontation" after weeks of warnings of conflict in the Indo-Pacific were followed by Home Affairs Secretary Mike Pezzullo using a staff address to say "drums of war" are beating in the region.
Key points:

Relations between China and Australia have soured over the past 12 months
Current and former politicians in Australia have warned of potential military conflict with China recently
China's Foreign Ministry spokesman has criticised Australia for what he labelled a "Cold War mentality"

In his Wednesday press conference Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, called Australia's politicians the "real troublemakers" and declared Australia's hyping of a China threat "unethical".

dear Brian,
you are missing the point.

We'd have to spend half our GDP to overcome China but then
we don't have the man power or manufacturing power or technology either.
Wars are obsolete now.
Wars would lead to nuclear weapons being used
and that means the end of the world.
It looks like sleepy Joe would get us involved.

Back to the UN.

https://thediplomat.com/2020/04/how-china-is-remaking-the-un-in-its-own-image/

Currently, four of the 15 UN specialized agencies are headed by Chinese nationals, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDP), and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). And with its contribution rising to 12 percent of the UN regular budget, passing Japan at 8.5 percent, China is currently the second-largest monetary contributor to the UN.

you are not following this.

The order of war is this:
China invades Taiwan then
the USA drags us into a war with China that we can't win.

Of course they do, they drop a bomb on us and they all starve to death, they have zero interest in interrupting the supply chain from Australia which keeps them fed and their industries going. Dropping  a bomb on us would ensure their extinction.

Yet they put tariffs on our goods to stop exports.

They put tariffs on our goods to try and make us understand how dependent we are on them for their orders of our goods.  They fail to realise we can sell out goods elsewhere...   ::) ::)

It doesn't seem to worry them.
They forget that we're the bread basket for them.
Of course its worrying them, big time. And they arent forgetting we are their bread basket . Thats why they are so intent on attempting to bully us.  They need our resources and food, we are feeding them and keep their manufacturing going. China is a week away from starvation, they have massive debt in relation to GDP and only supply a fraction of their own food needs, they are trying to secure these needs for the future by gaining control over Australian infrastructure. Its backfired on them, spectacularly, they are now paying a higher price for anything they resource from Australia and anything they resource from the rest of the world. We cant get enough live cattle for our other markets to export the demand is so high, barley exports immediately snapped up by other countries. If India gets it act together and starts the same sort of rapid rate of industrialisation as China is experiencing then we will ramp up and sell to the Indians .

Many Australian farmers are worried too.
They have lost markets for their produce.
It's not always easy to find alternative buyers.

Beef is at its highest price in  history, Barley has gone up $40 a tonne since the Chinese imposed tariffs. Why dont you people just look it up before you open your mouths?

This is going a bit off topic.
Tariffs are similar to sanctions and it was sanctions
that drove the Japs to invade other countries in WW2.

We need arms or troop reduction treaties.
