Coronavirus testing clinics across Melbourne are expected to be inundated again today after thousands of football fans were warned they may have been exposed to the city's new cases.


Victorian health authorities are combing through CCTV and potentially thousands of AFL fans will be ordered into self-isolation after
a person with COVID-19 went to a match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground at the weekend.


Today confirmed there are already cars lined up waiting to get into the Northern Hospital testing site, with the first person arriving 90 minutes before doors opened.


The positive case sat in zone four, level one, of the Great Southern Stand,
at the Punt Road end of the ground, to watch Collingwood's nail-biting loss to Port Adelaide on Sunday, the Department of Health said.
Fans seated in bays M1 to M16 will be contacted and told to get tested and isolate but that advice could be extended to more parts of the stadium after security footage is reviewed.


The 100,000-seat venue was less than a quarter full for the Power's one-point win, according to Austadiums, but thousands of fans may still have been sitting in the affected section.
It's not clear which of the nine cases identified so far watched the Pies-Power clash but the potential spreading of the virus at the MCG poses a major setback for Victorian authorities racing to keep the cluster from growing.

Recapping the situation in Victoria

There was a bit happening during that press conference, so here's a quick snapshot of the main announcements:

    A sixth locally acquired case was confirmed. Five new locally acquired cases were announced shortly after 8:00am (there were 10 cases in total, five of which were reported on yesterday), but Acting Premier James Merlino confirmed authorities had been advised of a sixth new case shortly before the press conference. That case will be included in tomorrow's figures.
    It brings the latest outbreak to 15 cases,
all of which are linked and are believed to have stemmed from the hotel quarantine breach in South Australia. However, contact tracers are still looking for the "missing link".
    The Department of Health has identified 301 primary close contacts from the outbreak, with negative results being returned for about 80 of those. Test results for the remainder are expected to come through today.
    Mr Merlino says he can't rule out taking "further action" in terms of restrictions, adding that the next 24 hours will be "critical".

No wonder when I spoke to real estate agents in Qld I was told of the unprecedented number of people fleeing Victoria to go up there. 30,000 plus and people were buying property online during our lockdown last year without even seeing it in real.
I’m stunned how a place we had for over 14 years, has recently gone up $150K this year!
And rent has risen $100 plus per week with bidders offering more!

hotel quarantine was forced upon them by scomo ... hotels were never built to act as quarantine chambers and don't do the job. Scomo need to stop hindering state governments from moving those in isolation into camps out in more isolated regions.

No actually, I met the lovely Mr Vich and his gorgeous Laotian wife.  Their dishwasher packed it in so I went and swapped it out myself as I had a near new spare. I must say the flat is in the best condition I've ever seen it. If I sell I'll probably give him first offer.

Residents report fleeing Melbourne on Thursday morning with fears the city is about to go into its fourth lockdown since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

There were 15 infections linked to an outbreak in Melbourne’s north on Wednesday, with Acting Premier James Merlino warning further action may be taken if Thursday’s numbers aren’t good news.

Callers to 3AW on Thursday morning said they were hitting the road to get out of the state as the city braces for a possible lockdown.

No Rhino, you weren't right. Certain pockets of high infection rate owing to socio-economic factors does not translate into "Non white people" being "much more likely to contract and spread the virus".

Mr Merlino said the state's public health experts' "primary concern is how fast this variant is moving".

"We've seen more evidence we're dealing with a highly infectious strain of the virus, a variant of concern, which is running faster than we have ever recorded," he said.

He said the speed at which the virus was being contracted and passed on was now far quicker, with the onset of symptoms now between one to two days as opposed to about five days previously.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said the strain, which is the Indian B1617 variant, "really is rapid and that's led to the exponential increase".

Mr Merlino said more than 10,000 primary and secondary contacts have been identified alongside more than 150 exposure sites which stretch from the NSW border to the Mornington Peninsula.

All contacts are required to isolate.

He confirmed the 11 new cases were linked to previous cases. One of the cases is in ICU and requires a ventilator.

Genomic sequencing shows the outbreak is linked to the case of a Wollert man, with an official SA report on Wednesday suggesting he caught the virus from aerosol transmission in an Adelaide quarantine hotel.

But a definitive link between the Wollert man and the Whittlesea outbreak has not been established."

I recall a year ago when the first stages of the coronavirus in Australia emerged, we Rockhamptonites had a bit of a laugh at the city folk acting all entitled to hoarding toilet paper in the larger cities. It started in Sydney and Melbourne. The concept of hoarding toilet paper made its way up to Brisbane and the Gold Coast. But by about March, Rockhampton started to see toilet paper rolls disappearing from the supermarket shelves.

I was down to about 2 rolls of toilet paper at home for myself (seeing that I live by myself). I knew that the 2 rolls would last me 2 months. After about 3 weeks (including 2 grocery shopping trips) of not seeing toilet paper on the shelves, the hoarding seemed to die down to a level where I could see stock coming in and toilet rolls were being shelved in the evening. I recall seeing a twenty-something years old woman smugly (ie, eyes half-closed, lips wide expression) ask the attendant stocking the shelves "'scuse me, can I get a roll for myself". It was not like she could not reach and grab a packet from the already stacked shelf. She needed an attendant to hand her one. I felt her entitlement attitude was all for show.

I bought myself an 8-pack of toilet rolls to take home and store. The last roll of toilet paper (from last year's purchase) was about to be used. I kept the packet handy until I started to use the new toilet rolls by May. Since then, I purchased another 8-pack of toilet rolls in March of this year. I still have not used all my toilet rolls from last year's purchase.

It amazes me that people need to use up more than 1 roll of toilet paper per month per person. Back when I lived with my parents, it was a matter of going through one roll of toilet paper per week (seeing that we were a family of 5). Why do people need to go through more than 5 toilet rolls per month (for a family of 5) and have to get 48 rolls of toilet paper? Are they buying up toilet paper for a school? I could understand if the family has people who have bowel conditions where they need to go to the toilet 5 times a day. But, why do people need to purchase so much toilet paper when a lockdown does not necessarily mean that there is going to be no access to shopping?

While I have to firstly admit that some of those attempting to flee Victoria before the lockdown might have had a genuine reason to leave the State the majority of them were just trying to "escape" so they wouldn't have to abide by the lockdown rules that everyone left behind has to do.

We've seen this selfish side of people time and time again with previous lockdowns around Australia during the past 12 months - "I don't want to stay here and be locked down, even if its just for 3 or 5 or 7 days and I don't care if I take Covid with me and spread it interstate".

Same applies to the majority of these "stranded Aussies" overseas who have pulled out their Australian passports that have no doubt been gathering dust in a drawer somewhere so they can now attempt to flee "home" to the safe haven of Australia to ride out the rest of the pandemic with no concern whatsoever that they might cause a major Covid outbreak here.

A large percentage of people these days only think about themselves as we've seen with the toilet paper panic buying every time there's a lockdown announced anywhere in Australia.

As someone wrote in our West Australian newspaper after our last 3 day lockdown over the ANZAC Day long weekend at the end of April:

"We're all in this together? If you saw the queues at the supermarkets just after the lockdown was announced it would have been obvious that it was all about looking after number one"

One of Victoria's latest five cases is a worker in an aged care facility.

Acting premier James Merlino said the staff member worked at Arcare in Maidstone.
"I want to thank the worker for doing the right thing and getting tested immediately upon getting symptoms, and helping get the facility as safe as possible," he said.
In total, two of today's five cases are close contacts in quarantine, one is linked to an exposure site and two are under investigation.


The new figures were released after 45,000 tests over the previous 24 hours.
The new figures come after only five new cases were revealed on Saturday.
But despite the positive signs amidst a record testing blitz, there remain hundreds of exposure sites visited by positive COVID cases that have contact tracers on edge.
Some of the latest exposure sites include several stores at Chadstone Shopping Centre and LaTrobe University.
A positive case visited the popular retail spot on Wednesday, with a restaurant they dined at now classified a Tier One location.
The infected person dined at Yokozuna between 11.30am and 12pm on May 26.
The other stores visited by the case include Optus, Bakers Delight and Woolworths which are all now listed as Tier Two sites.

I must confess, my gerontophobia kicks in whenever I hear about influenza season starting. Articles about coronavirus in aged care just leave me feeling very selfish.

My gerontophobia stems from the time I did a course in aged care. I completed the assessment course. The course co-ordinator asked if I wanted to keep on for the practical side working in an aged care facility. I said "yes". I did one... single... eight... hour... day, where I got up at 5 in the morning and was at a facility at 6 to start a practical. By 3 pm, I was ready to fall asleep, even when I did not do much work. I called the training centre and said no more would I be attending the prac. They awarded me for the written assessment that I could use towards other hospital-related employment.

But as for the aged care workers, I was absolutely rocked by how much effort they put into their jobs. They have to be on the go pretty much all the time and they have to document everything they do. The residents there are very demanding. Some stories I have heard is that the residents can be unreasonable.

I am ashamed to admit it, but I feel that sometimes people can be a burden on society when they are no longer capable of looking after themselves. The Paralympics that I watch after seeing the Olympics is the only thing that brings me back to a sane position on the subject. But, the elderly do sometimes unshackle my ageist thought process. Even Dad (66 years of age) is starting to peeve me off.

You are wrong on both sentences. I did one 8-hour day at an aged care facility and was generally impressed by most of the residents there. However, I had grown up to not respect the elderly (those over 60) because they had this entitlement attitude thinking that they deserve respect because they are elderly. There was this 100 years old woman (she turned 100 years old the next day) that was very active and could look after herself without much assistance. Then there was this 70-something year old woman who was diabetic, obese, and was about ready to lose her leg from her poor life choices. She had a demanding attitude that the AIN said was enough to make her want to quit.

And like it or not, ltyc, I work in industries that have made more money for Australia in business taxes in one year than what I have ever collected in my life. Even if I would be one-fortieth responsible for helping those businesses make the money to pay those taxes. And off the record, I have probably saved money for Australia simply by being a good example. How many drug addicts have you saved from their addictions?

All the courses on self-help would not dissuade me from holding ageist beliefs. Dad just annoys me because he spent his adolescence, teenaged years, early adulthood and then his early thirties not giving a damn about his health. Of course, his youth saved him from the effects of his smoking, drinking and whatever else he liked. But, even when he quit smoking and cut back on his drinking, he still held bad hygiene practices that haunt him today.

A girlfriend of mine broke up with me because she could not stand the way that a non-smoking, rarely drinking man would not go any further and just try to look after himself better. I just get the feeling that Dad does not feel like living much beyond 70 years of age. And the fact that Dad likes to think himself a hit with the ladies, that is enough to throw anyone off liking him.

When Dad passes away, I would be sure my sister would be devastated. Mum would be grieving for years. I would be sad. But, Dad has not built up a good reputation in the community that would mean a lot of people would miss him. And I do not know what I would get in the will. But, whatever I get will not pay off the years of Dad's narcissism or obliviousness of him as the dirty old man in the community.

I happen to be an advocate of euthanasia for the terminally ill. But, to answer your question, I will give up on life before I reach a stage where I need someone else to look after me in my old age.

I wouldn't want to be a burden to anyone and
neither would I want to live a miserable life in old age.

No matter your condition life is sweet and even though you say these things now when the time comes i think you will both have a change of mind.

But hey lets work towards being fit enough to look after ourselves in our old age.

The last time we had the virus in aged care
over 800 people died and we were in lockdown for 112 days.

State leaders are ‘extremely concerned’ about a new mystery case of Covid-19.

One of Victoria’s five new infections is a worker in an aged care facility in Melbourne’s west, health officials revealed on Sunday.

Health authorities are now scrambling to determine how the female health care worker at Arcare Maidstone, who lives in Altona, caught the virus.

She was asymptomatic and wore a mask when she worked shifts on Wednesday and Thursday at the aged care home.

“The aged care positive case is an extreme concern to us,” testing commander Jeroen Weimar told reporters on Sunday.

“It is our most vulnerable and sensitive setting.”

Acting Premier James Merlino on Sunday said the worker got a test as soon as she showed symptoms.

“I want to thank the worker for doing the right thing and getting tested immediately upon getting symptoms,” he said.

The worker had also received the first dose of the vaccine, and more than half of the residents have been vaccinated.


Out of the 76 residents at the centre, 53 had consented to the coronavirus vaccine, Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said on Sunday.

He urged people in aged care or their families to consent to receiving the jab.

“It can save your life,” Mr Hunt told reporters.

However only a third of aged care workers at the centre had received their vaccine.

The aged care centre has gone into strict lockdown with residents confined to their rooms amid fears the virus may spread.

Contact tracing is underway to determine how the worker caught the virus.

“This is the first mystery case we have seen in this particular outbreak,” coronavirus testing commander Mr Weimar said.

“We have identified the infectious period as potentially being Wednesday and Thursday of this week, the 26 and 27 of May, and of course we have now put in place our full response.

“We are doing on-site testing, of course.”

Victoria recorded five new local cases of Covid-19 on the third day of the state’s lockdown, including the aged care staffer.
