‘A ghetto school’: Six students suspended after fight at troubled school


Police were called to contain a brawl between students at Walgett Community College after simmering tensions within the community erupted on school grounds, forcing teachers to intervene and leaving a police liaison officer with a minor injury.

A student filmed the incident on Tuesday morning and posted the footage on social media. It shows several students fighting and others being attacked when they stepped in to intervene.

At the end of the video, one student could be heard saying: “A ghetto school. I’m f *** shaking.” Six students were given suspensions of 10 days each, and a police liaison officer suffered a minor injury when she intervened. No charges have been laid.

Walgett Community College has one of the highest rates of truancy in the state and has struggled to attract teachers and principals despite generous incentives. The school in north-western NSW receives more money per student than any other in NSW, public or private.

Teachers late last year protested against their workplace for being unsafe. Many have been hit or spat upon, or their cars damaged. Several teachers are on leave due to physical and psychological injuries sustained at the school. A new principal was appointed in April, the college’s 30th in 23 years.

Many students also feel unsafe. “It’s now attracting maybe 40 kids a day,” said one person familiar with the school, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Department of Education has banned anyone involved in Walgett Community College from talking to the media.

“The rest of the young people of Walgett don’t feel safe to be there and, in any case, the school is not staffed to be able to deliver a curriculum so attendance is rather pointless.”

The NSW Teachers Federation said 10 positions were vacant and timetabled classes were being cancelled.

What is to stop any of those children from going on to a degree in nursing and such - even higher callings...?  Sadly - their culture....

I note that most of those willing to give it a go in that footage are the girls... I'm no feminist, as everyone knows, but in certain communities it is the women/girls who mostly have a more positive sense of what they need and want.

I try to take what they say with a grain of salt..because its usually on topic and in the heat of the moment  I know for instance gordy has a young son   and no way would he deep down want to see kids any kid treated like some of ours are... but its frustrating for many who see so much waste and no improvement to account for it....we do spend a huge amount on aboriginal affaires..fine  if it helps to make change   but do you believe this thread alone is making CHANGES in the direction we would like to see???   do you seriously not expect people to get bloody pissed off when they read this mainly aboriginal school has the worst truanting in the country?????? and even has trouble getting teachers after offering much bigger salaries....???? you dont thinjk there is anything wrong with that scenario??

Here's a partial solution.

Withhold welfare payments for non attendance for students up to year 10 to a level that really hurts.
Also reward full attendance with a bonus.

Maybe this will motivate drunk/drugged parents to send their children to school.

I want these kids at school so they can fully interface with the workforce.  To do so we must investigate why 60% are truant.

I've been to Walgett many times.  it's a town full of drunk drugged Aboriginals.  Can't sugar coat it but you want to because of your soft bigotry of low expectations

Aboriginal society, no matter which tribe they emerged, had a system of rules. If the members were fighting each other, it was not an issue for the elders to spear the trouble makers in the legs. 200 years ago, that started to change when European settlers spread into other parts of Australia. It seems quite reasonable to have witnessed a few generations of aboriginal families having to adjust from living one form of lifestyle to another. Had aboriginal people not been overwhelmed by a new system of governing, how would aboriginal people have known about the changes that the aboriginal people were expected to make in regards to abiding by new laws?

In that SBS video a lot of those kids came across as pretty smart... they could find a future if they were guided on the paths of righteousness... were offered a true path for their valour... especially those young men who will otherwise end up a prison or suicide statistic or a violent death statistic or poor for life.

The dark side is quite shocking: The longer immigrant children live in this country, the worse, on average, their health, their attitude, and their school performance. What's more, with each subsequent generation, immigrant children do worse and worse. On average, first-generation children function at significantly higher levels than do typical American-born children. But, by the third generation, that advantage is gone.

To take just one example, the school performance of first-generation Chinese teenagers—one of the highest performing immigrant groups—markedly exceeds white teens. By the third generation, the difference disappears: English proficiency and school performance are inversely related. In other words, while once upon a time people came to the United States expecting to make better lives for their children, today the sad fact is that the more Americanized immigrant children become, the less successful they are.

Interesting - yes, I recall local doctors down south whose parents arrived here as refos and worked on the Snowy Scheme .. their kids were imbued with the need to work hard at study etc and get ahead instead of being peasants.

What further representation via some 'voice' is required for them and why, when nobody else has a group-specific voice?

What are some real solutions to their clear problems with violence, abuse, neglect of children, and so forth?

Why are they 'over-represented'* in prison, and what are some valid proposals to keep them out (other than enforcing peace and honesty in and between them o simply not enforcing the law when it comes to them)?

Why do they persist in their group problems and refuse and fight against any 'intervention'?

When will they actually articulate what they mean by 'their land' and what it is they are demanding, and all the other guff?


* It could be argued successfully that since prisons are only containers for those guilty of some offence, they are by no mean 'over-represented' at all, given that they are within that group of persons found guilty of an offence.  Note that being found guilty is not necessarily proof of actual offending in our courts... but that is not an Abo-exclusive issue.
