HONG KONG, July 30 (Reuters) - Hong Kong police said on Friday they had arrested a 40-year-old man for booing China's national anthem in a shopping mall broadcasting live the city's first Olympic gold medal win in 25 years earlier this week.

More than 100 people gathered briefly on Monday night in a mall to watch on a wide screen Cheung Ka Long claiming the Olympic men's individual fencing title. read more

Police said they fielded complaints that some people booed during the award ceremony when China's national anthem was played. Some shouted "We are Hong Kong," and clapped, according to video clips seen by Reuters.

In a statement posted online, police said the arrested person had held a Hong Kong British colonial flag, booed and chanted slogans with others at the time.

The Chinese population is going backwards. I doubt very much that they want to get to 1.8 billion in their territory, no matter if they expand or not. The Chinese might be quite happy to sit at 900 million or a billion people until they can sort out their aged population issue.

Kind of difficult to expand your economy if you are just going to take on several other countries militarily.

The only ignorance is yours. Your wikipedia figures are out of date. The birthrate of children born per woman for the Chinese has hovered around 1.6 since the 1990s. And they had introduced the one-child policy in China in the late 1970s. You would think that two generations of having just over one child on average per woman would mean that China's population has been going backwards for the last two decades. But, not you, it seems.

The maths is tricky but child-bearing women of 45 years in late 1970s are now dying off. Say .6 population then had 1.6 children, that's .8 each, giving 1.1 .  Then grandchildren started around 2000, about .3 population at .8.
Population is rising above 1.7 population.

Basically nothing serious. It was a misunderstanding. The man was booing because he thought it was the American anthem. Therefore, the authorities must intervene in order to avoid a diplomatic scandal.

The only way China will get to 1.6 billion people in the next 19 years is if their birth rate goes up to about 2.5 children per woman at the very least. Or, they get 20 million immigrants into the country every year until the year 2040.

Just this year, we Australians have seen a fall in our population. That is because our immigration intake has fallen to its lowest level. And our birth rates are, allegedly, up. Our birth rates of children per woman have been between 1.7 and 1.9 for the last 2 decades. Chinese births per woman have not been above 1.7 for quite some time. My guess would be that China's population is around 1 billion, with India being the largest country in the world.

China now has around 1.9 per woman. With life expectancy of 78 years, great grandchildren are likely. That's what bumps up the numbers.

China would have less than that. Even still, they would need to have millions of migrants move to China every year to prevent the casual slide in population. And China is less likely to have grandparents become great-grandparents. The generation gap is fairly large these days compared to the 1980s.
