We have elders who sit on the Koori youth court here in Parramatta.

Interesting form of justice. It's designed to be inclusive rather than punative. Offenders "graduate" and get awards. All the kids I've spoken to came away respecting it - can you imagine?

Justice as a way of reintegrating and connecting kids, not punishing them. I saw a boy sentenced - their first. The magistrate took the charges seriously, they weren't minimised. But rather than punish them, safeguards were put in through casework to prevent them happening again.

Maybe the parents should be copunished for the crimes of unsupervised kids.

Ms Fanning and her quartet of experts droned on about why Aboriginal kids are getting into trouble with the law without once considering the role of ‘parents’ in child rearing.  Not one of them asked why kids who are wandering the streets at night are not being supervised by their parents. In a survey of Aboriginal women in Fitzroy Valley in the Kimberley region, 50 per cent reported drinking while pregnant and 1 in 8 Indigenous kids born in that region were diagnosed as suffering from foetal alcohol syndrome (‘The Liliwan Project’). This is one of the highest incidences of FASD in the world and goes a long way to explain the incidence of Indigenous incarceration in that region.

The recent tragic incident in Adelaide in which an Indigenous 13-year-old boy was crushed to death in a garbage compactor in which he and two friends were sleeping is another example of parental failure. Had the poor boy been white, the media would have been onto the family immediately and asked, not unreasonably, why they didn’t know where their child was spending the night. Because he was Indigenous, the media tiptoed around the issue of possible parental neglect. It is a pattern we see repeatedly in the media’s discussion of dysfunctional families in Aboriginal communities.  The Fanning world view believes the reason why kids are locked up is not because there is no parental control, not because they keep stealing cars, not because of substance abuse.  It is because they are victimised by the police.

There are many reasons why Indigenous kids become enmeshed in the youth criminal justice system and it is time that journalists started doing their job of investigating those reasons instead of presenting an ideologically driven account of white supremacists masquerading as police.

It's always reasonable to give a kid a chance... the problem is allowing that chance to become a lifetime of chances...

the streets of Sydney are full of bored youth getting up to mischief. It's a valid observation and only an idiot ignores the causes of a problem  .. you might as well put a band aid on someone to deal with their cancer.

The problem is not boredom, its allowing the excuse of boredom for criminal acts. Only an idiot doesnt understand there is never an excuse for this type of criminal behaviour, thats why we have laws and jails, go stand in the naughty boy corner with Pecca.

Half-watched that 60 minutes thing on Neo-Nazis - was struck by the condemnation of the idea of getting some person to walk into a 'dangerous' area controlled by Black violence in Malbodishu and then 'sorting out' those who attacked that person.

What struck me about the way this was presented was that it was considered Evil™ to set someone up like that and then bash them - but it was not somehow EVIL for those persons to attack some passerby.

Amazing - if you are part of some Accredited Victim Group you are free to do anything without criticism, but if you are part of any group that reacts to violence, you are totally in the wrong.

It's a weird world we live in these days.  People walk past crimes or lock themselves away for fear of being attacked, not only by evil perpetrators, but also by authorities for intervening and maybe getting into a fight with criminals harming some innocent.  Just like all those people in that caravan park at Fitzroy Crossing.
