Title: Do electric cars need RE to be clean?

Interesting question.

On the face of it you would say coal fired electricity would mean an electric car is not “clean” or “green.” But is it so?

Petrol/diesel powered vehicles are inherently inefficient, electric motors are highly efficient. Anything else?

Yes! Regenerative braking. A conventional car slows by friction in the brake pads—kinetic energy turned into waste heat. An electric car can slow by turning kinetic energy into electric energy and storing that in the battery or capacitor—the brake is a generator.

Some huge trucks are using regenerative braking—less fuel needed to get back up to speed again.

So an electric car can be green even if its charge of electricity is 100% fossil fuel derived. But cheaper renewable energy is shouldering fossil fuel energy out of the game so more and more electricity is “green.”

Electric cars also don’t spew fumes into the cities and towns and are much quieter.

There are issues of finding better batteries but these are coming along. They are still pricy tho but should come down in price soon enough.
