How Truss destroyed her own premiership within weeks
From CNN's Rob Picheta in London

Liz Truss’s resignation brings to an ignominious end her catastrophic tenure in Downing Street, which appeared doomed ever since Truss’s flagship economic agenda sent markets into panic and led to a fall in the value of the pound.

She won support from Conservatives members by promising low-tax, pro-growth policies – derided by her critics as a lurch towards trickle-down economics – but within weeks of coming to power she disavowed the plans in a humiliating pivot, firing her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng and ditching virtually all of the fiscal agenda in the wake of a market backlash.

It came after investors rejected an announcement by the Truss government in late September that it would slash taxes while ramping up borrowing in a bid to produce faster growth, citing concerns that the plan would push up inflation just as the Bank of England wants to bring it down.

Fears also crept in about the sustainability of government debt at a time of rapidly rising interest rates.

The pound crashed to a record low against the US dollar, while bond prices slumped, sending yields soaring. That pushed mortgage rates much higher, and brought some pensions funds to the brink of default.

The Bank of England was forced to announce three separate interventions to avoid a full-scale meltdown in the UK government bond market.

Truss meanwhile failed to regain control of an increasingly mutinous Conservative Party, and her Home Secretary Suella Braverman launched a blistering attack on her leadership after leaving the role on Wednesday.

A final chaotic display saw Truss allies accused of manhandling lawmakers to force them to vote against a fracking ban on Wednesday evening.

Liz Truss’ resignation leaves a party in tatters and a nation in despair

Luke McGee
Analysis by Luke McGee, CNN
Updated 3:24 PM EDT, Thu October 20, 2022

London CNN  —

Even by recent standards, Thursday was a jaw-dropping day in British politics.

Liz Truss, a born-again Brexiteer who took over from Boris Johnson a mere six weeks ago, announced that she was to resign. In her wake, she leaves an economic crisis precipitated by a “growth plan” full of unfunded tax cuts, and a Conservative Party that may be in office, but is most certainly not wielding much power.

It is hard to overstate just how much impact Truss’ accession to the top job had on British politics in such a short space of time. Her radical economic policy proposals – even before they were even enacted – caused the pound to sink to its lowest level against the dollar in decades.

The turmoil caused government bonds to soar, which had a negative impact on government borrowing and, more perilously, real people’s pension funds. The rise in interest rates forced up mortgage repayments, and lenders scrambled to pull their products from the market, dashing the hopes of prospective homeowners almost overnight.

Faced with the fury of her own party – for whom fiscal discipline had, for so long, been a watchword – Truss capitulated. She sacked her finance minister, lost her home secretary and has created even more divisions in a party that has been tearing itself to shreds ever since the 2016 Brexit vote.

It was only a matter of time before she was forced out.

Politicians across the divide are asking the same question that the majority of the country are probably asking themselves: What on earth happens now?

Australia's first female prime minister, Julia Gillard, has been sacked by her party just months before the next election and replaced by the man she ousted three years ago. Boris has been in late-night crisis talks with Lord Kevin of Rudd and sharpening his kitchen knives.

Hi Lisa,
it's all about modern monetary theory - MMT.
Govts. print Govt. bonds and the Reserve bank buys them by printing money.
It's funny money that is created out of nothing.
It causes inflation and even hyperinflation -
it robs people of their life savings and puts the Govt. into debt they can never pay off -
they just print more Govt. bonds to cover the debt -
and it spirals in to total collapse of the financial system.

Unfortunately the last 10 years of Libbo Govt here created $1 trillion of such debt
as they went on a spending spree like drunken sailors
with money they didn't have.
I am very worried about it.

Whatever happened to the good old fashioned traditional core value of LIVING WITHIN YOUR MEANS? It matters not what $$$ comes into your weekly budget ... find ways to live by that amount. Cut back wherever possible if that's what it takes.

The way I've structured our budget is as follows :

1. Borrow only for real estate.

2. Everything else is paid for by cash/cash transfer.

3. Always ensure you have extra available funds to cover emergency expenses such as funerals.

4. Review all incoming bills. It won't hurt to double check that you're paying the most cost effective telecommunications charges, car/house etc insurance premiums.

5. Now this is something I've not spoken much about because a lot of people might find it hard to believe .... give money to those less fortunate. It could be a monthly amount to various charities or people around you who are hurting financially. Just give it a try (if you can afford to of course). You'll find that the amount you give will come back to you twice or even 3 times over. And that's been my experience. Please don't ask me to explain this phenomenon because I can't. But it's true. And many people swear by it - not just me.

Back to the topic though .... I so wish our government representatives exercised sustainable economic debt restraint. God help us if we follow in the footsteps of the UK's economic crisis. 🥺

The big question I have is what is going to absorb the impact?
the housing market? the banks? our super funds?

Everything will be affected.
The Govt's over reacted to Covid -
printing money to give to people because they couldn't work
as they were put into curfews and under house arrest.
That was an over reaction and was paid for by pumping 100s of $billions
of printed money into the Australian economy.
They were acting as though Covid was like Ebola with a 50% death rate when
in fact the true death rate was only about 0.1% and then mostly
very old and fragile people in rest homes who would have died anyway
if they just got a common cold.
The Govts. plunged our economy into a death spiral without good reason
and there was nothing we could do about it due to the draconian laws they made.
Well now – we are going to pay for their tragic mistakes.
What we see in the UK is just the start as other countries fall like 9 pins.

Liz Truss has been your shortest serving PM at 166 cm. Nicola Sturgeon of Scotland is not a PM at 159 cm.  Boris Johnson and Adolf Hitler measure the same 175cm but little Vladimir Putin weighs in at 162 and wears high heels to take on the mighty Donald.

LONDON — Feminists worldwide touted another feather in their caps today as Liz Truss's resignation meant the all-time record for the shortest term by a UK Prime Minister is now held by a woman.

"This is just the latest domino to fall in our ongoing fight against the global patriarchy," said Jill Jakenhaal (she/her), chairperson of the London chapter of Women Against Everything. "We can now be proud that the fastest failure by a Prime Minister was accomplished not by a man — by a woman! Take that, male oppressors!"

Celebrations for Truss's embarrassing place in history were already underway, with parades full of women in pink knit hats being planned for the coming days in major cities around the world. Witnesses to the celebrations in the streets were somewhat confused, however. "Doesn't this kind of highlight a woman totally crashing and burning in a leadership position?" asked bystander Paul Bridgewater. "I don't know that holding the record for earliest resignation is something to boast about."

"You're just jealous!" Jakenhaal shouted back to Bridgewater. "You men want to have everything to yourself and keep everyone else out. Well, not anymore! We're going to put the names of women in the record books for everything — worst leaders, lowest test scores, everything!"

At publishing time, feminists were already anticipating the grand men-hating celebrations that would surely be held to commemorate Jill Biden cementing her place in history as Most Underachieving First Lady.

Yes, it's truly amazing.

The poms are actually considering giving Bozo Boris the top job again. Incredible.

And the criminal & corrupt GOP will give the orange alleged child rapist the go ahead again if he decides to run.

Absolutely ridiculous, when Pence and DeSantis would have a much better chance of winning - Trump is damaged goods, and he's very unpopular with sane Americans.

Having said that, I really do want to see Trump run again - seeing him lose once more (by 10 million votes this time) will be priceless.

This is what happens when so called 'conservatives' stand for nothing except Labour/Labor Lite.
This is what happens when 'conservatives' do not speak for the people who elected them but speak for the fuqqn media luvvies and activists.
This is what happens when 'conservatives' get into office but never actually exercise any power.  ScoMo, May, Cameron, BoJo, Truss, Dubya - never did a really conservative thing in office.

And when real conservatives get into office and into power - Sweden, Italy, Poland, Hungary etc - the jackals are unleashed, baying and snarling.

The British Liberal Party died a hundred years ago, when Lloyd George resigned. He didn't know he was the last Liberal PM. The same should happen to the British Conservatives and the Australian Liberals and the Canadian Liberals - they stand for fkk all.  There should be a new conservative party in each of these countries.

Oh -and the US Republicans are just the same.

I can't tell the difference between Labor, Libs and the Greens on energy, immigration, jobs, business, infrastructure, multiculturalism, education. It is the same shite. Same in the UK, US, Canada.

As we've been reporting, we are in a watching-and-waiting phase, as more than half of Tory MPs have publicly declared who they'll support in the leadership race to become the UK's next prime minister.

Penny Mordaunt - 23 MPs

Mourdaunt remains the only candidate to officially declare she'll run.

George Freeman says Mordaunt is the right choice because the country needs "stability and unity, not a soap opera".

Andrea Leadsom, former business secretary, said Mordaunt was the unifying candidate; an experienced minister and a "robust Brexiteer".

Both Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson remain well ahead of Mordaunt in terms of declared supporters, but neither have publicly announced that they'll be running.

Boris Johnson - 53 MPs

Former home secretary Priti Patel says Johnson could bring together a united team and lead the UK to a stronger and more prosperous future.

And Johnson loyalist Nadine Dorries also added her support. "The boss is back", she said in a tweet.

Rishi Sunak - 125 MPs

International Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch writes in an article in tomorrow's Sunday Times that Sunak "is the man for the job".

Bim Afolami told the BBC he is backing Sunak because he will enable "sustainable economic growth". Steve Barclay echoed Afolami, saying Sunak is in the best place to deal with the current economic challenges.

Correct. Although I would reserve my judgement on what actual conservative policy should be. They should conserve the environment, and conserve social cohesion, border control, and military policy. US Presidents and Trump could stop illegal aliens crossing the border, but then they wouldn't have cheap Guatemalan maids and gardeners, which may not sound important until low wage illegal aliens began to undercut construction jobs like roofing, carpentry, and bricklaying. These are the fall-back position of the working class. But I would go further in my criticism of the "entrepreneurial" class, who are typicall "flag wavers" yet they pay for the Chinese military through their endless search for low wage manufacturing, which resulted in globalisation, and huge profits for importers.

There are no leaders. All we have today are career politicians and entrenched bureaucrats. They are able to fake their way into positions of power, without any real credentials. Leadership is not a product of peace and prosperity. True leaders only emerge in times of adversity, and then they stake their career on the issues.

Johnson says he will not run in Tory leadership race

The former prime minister says he was attracted by the prospect of returning to No 10,
but has decided it is not the right thing to do.

Looks like Rishi Sunak will be PM. He supports Ukraine against the empire and the reports that he wants India to colonise Britain are totally untrue.

WTF????

And yet you'd still vote for them  :D :D

Didn't.

Still can't figure out why they didn't go with him in the first place.

Everybody knew Liz wasn't the right person.

It was just sentiment. Liz bowed to Liz.

Buggered the pound,
Fkked off..."

He did it kicking and screaming.  He's not running because he couldn't get the numbers
