A gunman is still at large after killing at least 10 people near Los Angeles
in one of California's deadliest mass shootings.

Another 10 people were wounded and some are in a critical condition.

The shooting in Monterey Park, which has a large Asian population, happened shortly after thousands of people had gathered for a Lunar New Year festival.

The gunman opened fire on a busy dance studio in the downtown area of the city.

Officers arrived at the scene at 22:22 local time on Saturday (06:22 GMT on Sunday) and found people "pouring out of the location screaming", Captain Andrew Meyer said.

Victims were treated both inside the Star Ballroom Dance Studio and in the car park outside, police said.

Officers are hunting for a male suspect between the age of 30 and 50 who fled the scene, but have received different descriptions of the attacker. Dozens of witnesses are being interviewed.

"We need to get this person off the street as soon as possible," Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said at a news conference on Sunday.

He gave no details about the weapon used but said the suspect may have fled in a white van. The motive for the attack is still unclear.

The centre of Monterey Park, including West Garvey Avenue where the shooting happened, was decorated for Lunar New Year with red lanterns and banners.

The celebration is one of the largest in California and attracted tens of thousands of people throughout the day.

Two days of celebrations were planned, but officials cancelled Sunday's events following the shooting.

There is a large police presence in the city - which is about seven miles (11km) east of downtown Los Angeles - and much of the area near the dance studio has been sealed off.

Police are investigating the possibility that the suspect entered a second dance studio around 30 minutes after the attack.

The weapon he was carrying was wrestled from him by someone at the Alhambra dance studio, according to police. No one was injured at that location.

"We believe that there's an incident that may be related," Sheriff Luna said. "It's definitely on our radar."

It's still too soon to rule out hate crime as a possible motive for the deadly Monterey Park, California, mass shooting, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said Sunday.

"We don't know if this is specifically a hate crime defined by law," Luna said at a briefing on the mass shooting.

The attack happened at a ballroom near a Lunar New Year event Saturday night.

"Everything's on the table," Luna said of the ongoing investigation. "But, who walks into a dance hall and guns down 20 people?" the sheriff questioned.

"The description we have now is of a male Asian — does that matter?
I don't know," said Luna. "I can tell you that everything's on the table," he emphasized.

"Our detectives are looking at every possibility with our partners," the sheriff added.

According to Luna, LASD is working on an updated suspect description and expects to release that at some point Sunday.

He said at the briefing that investigators had received differing descriptions of the shooter from witnesses. The only other information he could provide as of late Sunday morning was that the gunman was believed to be 30 to 50 years old.

Monterey Park is a predominantly Asian community, and instructors at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio told CNN the venue was a gathering place for the local Chinese community.

Police say driver of cargo van involved in Torrance standoff
may have shot himself

The standoff in Torrance, California, began when police tried to stop a white cargo van that fit the description of a vehicle of interest from the Saturday night shooting in Monterey Park, law enforcement sources tell CNN, citing preliminary information.

As officers gave commands for the occupant to exit the van, they heard what they believe was the sound of the driver shooting himself, the sources said.

Officers have surrounded the van, and it appears they may be moving toward a tactical approach to ensure the driver is not still alive and armed inside.

Torrance is a city in Los Angeles County's South Bay region, located about 30 miles southwest of Monterey Park.

Man found dead after police standoff in Torrance was the Monterey Park shooting suspect, sheriff says

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said investigators have confirmed that the man found dead inside a white cargo van after a standoff with police in Torrance, California, is the same person suspected of carrying out a mass shooting in Monterey Park Saturday night.

Luna said that after the standoff, officers found the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Luna identified the suspect as Huu Can Tran, 72.

Officials also believe Tran was the gunman disarmed by a group of people at a dance studio in Alhambra, California, shortly after the mass shooting Saturday night, the sheriff said.

Evidence found in the van where Tran died linked him to both the Alhambra and Monterey Park scenes, according to Luna, who said there are "no outstanding suspects" linked to the massacre.

Monterey Park is part of a cluster of small cities that sit in the
San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles, all with a burgeoning
Asian American community, mostly from China.

The city of 60,000, where around 65% of residents are Asian,
is consistently ranked as one of the best and most peaceful
places to live in the United States.

Oh yeah? Not any more, tragically. :'(

BUT the superior man accepts that if something happens it is his own perspective that determines if he becomes a whiney infant about it or accepts what happened happened, because it happened.

he is ok with whatever happens and is not in resistance to life.

thus he is at peace .

he does not need to have everything just perfect so that he can feel ok
that way of living (very common for the chode) is exhausting

the superior man accepts everything , warts and all and prides himself on his ability to remain emotionally stable

then he gets into action taking momentum and tries to alter things for the better.
venting fear on the internet is not changing a thing
it is all ego driven
the ego wants desperately to survive.
hence people who are very upset by mass shootings have too much attachment to ego.
they need to stop seeing themselves as the centre of the universe and develop some humility

You can after they shoot up a few schools and a shopping mall.

Funny that just a few slight restrictions that would not impact anyone's gun rights would cut the death toll by more than half and they are not interested to do anything.

Sad, but undeniably true.

It's a sickness that will never, ever be cured.

Already this year, 116 children have been killed by guns in the US.

That's five kids killed by guns every single day.

Does that make the news? Of course not - they don't care.
