Title: • Happy Valentines Day 2023 •
Post by Lisa Jones on Feb 13th, 2023 at 7:12pm
I bought my hubby a cute card and a DVD.

I know he’s bought me a card because I was putting his clean t shirts away and I accidentally found his Valentine’s Day card. I’m pretending I don’t know about it.

Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? If so come and tell us.

I actually forgot it’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow… I was wondering as we drove to specialist follow up appointment for hubby… why so many signs “Flowers ahead”  ;D
Oh yeah now I know why!
It’s a pain coz hubby had his birthday last week… mine is in 2 weeks time… and actually no we don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day… we’ve become that way to even say to family not to worry about cards or presents for our birthdays… their presence is more important and having a meal together… usually bringing a cake… which is preferred…
Throughout the year I randomly buy stuff as we see them… like before Xmas I bought a dvd set of Big Bang Theory and original Star Trek series for hubby.
I’ve got beautiful pink roses blooming near the pathway to entry… I will pick them tomorrow and put in vase  :)

There should be no special day for flowers-they should be just as you say :anytime: - they are so lovely.
I never got into the habit of growing flowers- just veggies !My mama would put some in but mostly stocks and snapdragons!!

So pretty!! My dad was a vegetable man- very practical / very healthy!

What I find quite fascinating is this : only females have responded in this topic 😂🤣😆

Anyway, I’ve got THE CARD for Valentine’s Day 2023. It’s beautiful of course and it will join ALL the cards he’s EVER given me.

• I have a special time-capsule/box. In it I’ve carefully placed all the cards my husband has given me (not just Valentine’s Day/birthday/Mother’s Day/Christmas Day). It sits right next to another box in the cupboard (that one has all our receipts for tax time). These 2 boxes are not small and are made out of thick decorative cardboard.

Both these boxes are very dear to me because they serve as visual prompts of how our relationship has moved forward in terms of finance AND love/care/respect.

We’ve come a long way.

Have a lovely Valentine’s Day everyone. Celebrate it your way! And remember there’s no need to go silly and buy something super expensive - just a little something even if it’s hand made like a note or a card is enough really.

Edit : Some of my neighbours will once again show off seriously expensive jewellery which they never wear. If that makes them happy then I’m happy for them. Jewellery unfortunately just isn’t my thing. I have enough of it already and as an avid gardener/chronic cleaner lol I never wear jewellery unless I go out.i

I don’t like any female contributors left out… everyone has their value on this forum (and feelings)

On a positive…I’d like to wish Mothra (and others fems whose forum names may not give out clues as to gender) a happy Valentine’s Day  :)
And to the guys too…. happy Valentine’s Day.

Today…. I had a couple female friends visit… as we went outside to say bye… there’s my beautiful pink rose plant with a beautiful scent near walkway with an abundance of roses blooming… in fact never seen so many on it like that before…
I clipped off a few roses with stems, and gave it to the ladies… they loved it…
It doesn’t have to be Valentine’s Day to make someone happy with flowers.

I only grew snapdragons once.

They were bright and colorful and were in flower a long time.

Silly, pretentious people want to call them “antirrhinums”

Quote:
Antirrhinum - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antirrhinum
Antirrhinum is a genus of plants commonly known as dragon flowers, snapdragons and dog flower because of the flowers' fancied resemblance to the face of a dragon that opens and closes its mouth when laterally squeezed. They are native to rocky areas of Europe, the United States, Canada, and. . .

To me, snapdragons they are and remain.

Looking at the description there should grow fine here, excellent! I want to grow tulips too, of course, being a transplanted Dutchman! They will also do fine. A front lawn sloping to the north, perfect!

Huh! The best I can do with gardening… just hapsadaysically plant wherever… and hope it’s in the right spot to survive! Some do!  :)
For I am just a pot luck gardener and an exasperated one at that with conclusion in mind of “oh no you bought me a plant present, how nice”   ::)
One thing grows well for me…rosemary!
Oh and also those pink roses and… agapanthus!

Planning to grow birch and maple on the nature strip (nature strip is like 10 metres wide!) and my three crab apples closer to the house. So—blossoms, fruit and striking yellow/red leaf colors in the fall!

I have something like a rockery here with red and pink roses blooming in great profusion. All to be ripped out to make way for apple trees! Some pine trees to be lopped.

Vege and herb patch, polytunnel or greenhouse, plenty of room for all!

Who knew?

As it's a Christian celebration, Valentine's Day is banned in
Indonesia, Pakistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia due to beliefs
that it conflicts with Islamic culture.

Islam is too busy hating/killing/undermining women etc so of course it can’t be bothered with celebrating love.

From Wiki etc....

Valentine’s Day - originated as a Christian feast day honoring a martyr named Valentine. Through later folk traditions, it has become a significant cultural and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world.

How Valentine’s Day became connected with romantic love is said to be due to a poem by Geoffrey Chaucer. In 1375, he wrote “Parliament of Foules” connecting romantic love to the beginning of mating season for birds (mid-February). He wrote, “For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day/Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.”

During that time in history, courtly love flourished, and couples took the occasion to express their love in the form of flowers, candies, and cards (valentines).

Perhaps this is where we get the term love birds from?

Does anybody have a favorite flower/decorative tree etc they like to grow?

Any species birch or maple give the best fall leaf color display? Most vivid color etc?

I need to grow some gerberas. Gerberas were Mum’s favorite flower. Younger sis and I were talking to the funeral director planning the funeral with texts/calls to other sis and nieces etc. One niece came up with the incredible idea that the flowers on Mum’s coffin should be gerberas. That was done.

I don’t greatly care for gerberas myself, especially the original ones with just one ring of petals but this is not about me.

Younger sis should have retrieved Dad’s ashes from Centennial Park and when ready I will get sis to send me a small jar each of their ashes.

I envisage a ring of what is wrongly called Imperial Bamboo or some other tough perennial to form a windbreak then some gerberas and other daisies—Annie loved daisies or so she said—I guess she never grew flowers but knew of daisies? (Apartment living.) Some rosemary or more likely some sprigs of rosemary in a jar for Mum’s birthday and date of death with the flowers hopefully in bloom (what flowers in November??) Mum and Dad’s ashes to be scattered into the bed of daisies, rosemary and gerberas.

To most it will just be a flower bed—no need to talk to them about death.

Dunno what flower would represent Dad best. Possibly a small tree? A weeping {whatever?} Nah, keep the memories happy. A small tree tho be good, will think about it.

LOL, Dad did not like painting, no sirree! Time came to paint the downpipes. Out rushed Mum—too late! Dad painting the downpipes did not hold a sheet of cardboard between pipe and the bricks of the wall—paint all over the bricks. Mum not happy, LOl!

Mum’s birthday is coming up. Have a nice vase can take a single rose, a candle all ready to be lit. DON’T have a photo of Mum—all in temporary storage! Drat!

So, anybody have an idea for a small tree, flowering or not, be good as a symbol or remembrance of a man who valued family and home above all?

He was so homesick: in WWII, doing forced labor in the BMW factory near Berlin he got so homesick he left the camp and—minus papers, passport, train ticket and money—left to go home. Of course, he was rounded up and got sent to a punishment camp for a week—his boss in the BMW plant liked Holland and Dutch people. Mid 1943 he got permission—and money, ticket, papers etc etc—returned to Holland and married Mum before it was back to the BMW plant.

Hmmm—I have the wedding photo, will use that for my little memorial!

Hah, Dad returned to Holland fat as butter, having been fed by the Yanks since the liberation of the Magdeburg camp where he was stationed then. Came home to rake-thin wife—were it not for operation Chowhound—look it up—Mum and thousands of other Dutch people may have starved!

Voedsel! Vrede! Vrijheid!

(the third word has the “lange ei” and the “korte ei” which bedevil Dutch school kids learning the write the language  ;D

1957, Dad by himself in Melbourne, looking for work. Homesick—came home early one day—to find a cleaner ransacking his suitcase! Dad went home next bus or train.

Just watch out for the cactoblastis moth, introduced for the purpose of killing prickly pear.

Funny—agapanthus is a declared noxious weed here—most councils have it growing as a border to lawns etc—tough plant!  ;D

Prickly pear makes a great mead (melomel!)

Do you burn the prickles off the fruit?

no, i use leather riggers gloves to handle the fruit then cut the ends off, slice down the skin (not into the fruit) and just peel it away. You've just got to be careful that the hand with the glove only handles the skin, and the hand without the glove handles the fruit. If you mix it up not only can it be painful, but you can get thorns in your fruit.

I do like snapdragons.

Voedsel! Vrede! Vrijheid!

(the third word has the “lange ei” and the “korte ei” which bedevil Dutch school kids learning the write the language  ;D )

Mum had some magic words for Dad: I have a house!

Tens of thousands of people looking for a home to rent—Mum found one!

1957, Dad by himself in Melbourne, looking for work. Homesick—came home early one day—to find a cleaner ransacking his suitcase! Dad went home next bus or train.

So a tree looking like it is homesick  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Anyone know of one?

Bringing the topic back on point!

So what did we all get for Valentine’s Day?

I got a surprise....diamond ring.

Not exactly what I was hoping for. But it’s quite beautiful. Hubby won’t tell me how much he paid for it but I’m pretty sure I’ll find that out sooner than later (after I go through all the bank statements).

Well, I would like to know:

1. A nice daisy to grow as remembrance for Annie. Pigface is nice to grow on a rough bit of ground but not the nicest as a remembrance—too cheerfully crude and bright. African daisy I think might be OK?

2. A nice little tree to grow as a remembrance of Dad—don’t want a big tree will take over the gerbera/daisy bed. NOT pine or gum. Maybe a buddleah? (however that is spelled) to attract butterflies?

Buddleja. Think I remember checking that they will grow here. Will start looking at nursery websites.

If they grow in England they will grow here.

Daisies:

Quote:
Daisies are a large group of flowering plants from the Asteraceae family, with about 20,000 species1. Some of the most popular types of daisies are the English daisy, the Shasta daisy, the Gerbera daisy, the African daisy, the Gloriosa daisy, and the Marguerite daisy1,2,4. The English daisy, also known as the common daisy, has a yellow center and white petals, and is native to Europe2,3,4,5. The Shasta daisy is similar to the English daisy, but larger and taller4. The Gerbera daisy is a colorful and showy daisy that is often used as a cut flower1. The African daisy has a variety of colors and shapes, and is native to South Africa1,3. The Gloriosa daisy is a hybrid of the black-eyed Susan and the coneflower, with bright yellow and orange petals1. The Marguerite daisy is a delicate and fragrant daisy that is native to the Canary Islands1.

African and Marguerite daisy sound like suitable flowering plants for my little remembrance plot. With the gerbera, of course, Mum’s favorite flower. All sheltered by bedleja.

I look for decent and fair moderating. What I see is GMods recruiting some members into a war on other members. My contempt for this dreck is boundless. FD does nothing but soon will whinge again about the money this place costs him and how far it has sunk in SEO rankings.

Interesting.... Show me the evidence you have gathered, We'll have FD look into this extraordinary claim.

I cannot think of anyone I would send a flower to for Valentine's Day. I get creep written all over me.

I never knew you were related to Dumbarse Drunk 😂🤣😆

Geez you're a bugger-in-the-head most times, Larry. Are you getting ready for the gay mardi gras? I don't know when it is, but I think it is in your area. You and "hubby" can do a "look at me, look at me" wave to the crowd as you ride your nifty 50s down Oxford Street.

You sound a tad personally offended by my earlier remark. 😂🤣😆

The irritation being that you embellish something out of nothing and then act indifferent when someone counters with a "piss off" remark.

STFU! The fact that you are a damaged and mentally ill self confessed sociopath who gets on very well with Monk says everything .... about Dumbarse Drunk who’s as mad as a hatter at the best of times 😂🤣😆

Now where was my topic.....

I would not call myself damaged or mentally ill. I have schizophrenia and I have drunk more alcohol in the last 3 years than I have in the 20 years before it. But, I would say I am more stable-minded than what you have ever been (or at least for a long time).

You seem so emotionally strained that I can only assume that "hubby" is just some guy that you have been stalking. Valentine's Day would be nothing more than a reminder of that fact. I put up a confession that a rose from me at my time in life would come off as creepy. You jumped on that confession and tried to kick me when I was down. So, "no thanks to you", Larry.

Hmmm might need to take a pic of it. With a lovely dated little note of course addressed to OzPol. 😎

I was going to jump on the fact that you could have posted a fake photo. But, letting us know that you would have to put a dated note to OzPol to show that it was not fake would still raise questions about the authenticity. People can still make fake photos and write in photoshopped notes.

I've seen the drink ruin too many people in many ways.
They've lost their jobs, relationships, confidence and sanity.
You either do or you don't - make your choice!

Maybe you should watch the superb Mads Mikkelsen in the Danish movie "Another Round"? and read this as a preview and then after - ask yourself, is it worth it?

Teachers Martin, Tommy, Peter, and Nikolaj are colleagues and friends that work at a gymnasium school in Copenhagen. All four struggle with unmotivated students and feel that their lives have become boring and stale. At a dinner celebrating Nikolaj's 40th birthday, the group begins to discuss the theory of psychiatrist Finn Skårderud — that humans are born with a blood alcohol content (BAC) deficiency of 0.05%, and that being at 0.05% makes one more creative and relaxed. Martin is confronted by his senior students and their parents, who express that he has become a barrier to them passing their history exams.

The friends decide to embark on an experiment to test Skårderud's theory. They start a group log of what occurs when they start drinking at regular intervals to maintain this blood alcohol level. Two of the friends have personal challenges that also make this experiment attractive: Martin is depressed and alienated from his family and students, Nikolaj's wife seems to have contempt for him. Each man has his own way of sneaking alcohol during the day while teaching or coaching children, but they never drink and drive. They agree to a set of rules: their BAC should never be below 0.05 and they should not drink after 8:00pm or on the weekends.

Within a short period of time, all four members of the group find both their work and private lives more enjoyable and successful. Martin, in particular, is delighted as he finally manages to reconnect with his wife and children. His teaching of history becomes inspired, and his students begin enjoying class and respecting him. He teaches history through the lens of drinking alcohol, connecting with heavy drinking students. Agreeing that the experiment should be taken further, the group increases the daily BAC limit to 0.10. Still finding their lives improved, one night they decide to drink to oblivion to test the liberating effects, but after coming home incapacitated, both Martin and Nikolaj are confronted by their families. Martin's family express their worries, revealing that they knew he has been drinking for weeks. He and his wife express how each has drawn away from the other, and she admits to infidelity. The group abandons the experiment. Martin and his wife have split up, and while he tries to make amends, she rejects him.

All the members of the group have stopped drinking during the day with the exception of Tommy, who the others try to take care of. But at a faculty meeting where the headmaster reveals that teachers have been drinking at work, Tommy arrives incredibly drunk. Later, Tommy boards his boat drunk with his old dog, sails out on the ocean, and commits suicide by drowning at sea.

The three remaining members of the group go out to dinner after Tommy's funeral to celebrate him, and enjoy sparkling wine. While dining, Martin's wife texts him that she misses him a lot. The recently graduated students drive by, and Martin, Peter and Nikolaj join them in celebrating and drinking at the harbour. Martin, a former jazz ballet dancer, dances with the rest of the partygoers, which he had refused up to this point despite his colleagues' urging. His dance becomes increasingly energetic and joyous before jumping off the harbour.

YOU got the idiot Booby to start the “Cats and Critters topics now here” in his toilet of an MRB, right?

Why was that except to recruit Booby in your war on Aussie, me, Greg, John etc?

Even FD is too scared to move topics to the correct MRB!

You are destroying OzPol, Set. Well, one of the agents of destruction.
