Up to 350,000 New Zealanders will be able to apply directly for Australian citizenship without having to secure permanent residency first.

Kiwis who arrived in Australia after 2001 will be eligible to apply from July 1, 2023.

Special Category Visa holders can apply for Australian citizenship, as long as they have lived in the country for four years and meet the other eligibility requirements.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is due to make the announcement on Saturday, coinciding with his New Zealand counterpart Chris Hipkins' visit to Australia.

'Australia and New Zealand have a deep friendship, which has been forged through our history, shared values and common outlook,' Mr Albanese said.

'We know that many New Zealanders are here on a Special Category Visa while raising families, working and building their lives in Australia.

'So I am proud to offer the benefits that citizenship provides.'

The changes will bring Australia's treatment of New Zealanders in line with New Zealand's treatment of Australians.

I don't know about that -

Except for the horror stories that were crossing the Tasman about the convicts and nevermind those convicts who had left/escaped NSW and sailed to NZ between 1788 and the mid-1830s. The Maoris in the north had forged friendships with religious pioneers and missionaries and were angered by the behaviour of those from NSW.

Also, there were the horror stories also crossing the Tasman about the treatment of the native peoples of the Australian colonies.

These were the reasons that prompted the notion of a treaty between the British crown and the Maori people - to ensure that atrocities committed in the Australian colonies would not be repeated in NZ were it to become a British colony.

Terra Nullius and its subsequent disasters were circumvented in NZ by the notion of NZ being governed by the 'Confederation of Maori Chiefs'

NZ joining the Commonwealth of Australia was never, and has never been, seriously considered by kiwis after the Treaty was signed.

There is an allegation made that the Maori people are naturally fat because they had a history of needing to store fat for the long boat rides over the ocean. Pacific Islanders have that kind of trait about being fat because of the long journeys they endured.

But, I think you are right about the fish and chips allegation. I recall that Pacific Islanders did not have an obesity epidemic until after the Americans left the Pacific after the second world war. Among the items left behind were the fattening tins of meat and other not so wholesome foods that the Islanders could not digest properly. Decades later, along come the fast food stores.
