Title: Charles's Coronation a Waste of Taxpayer Funds?
Post by AusGeoff on Apr 30th, 2023 at 10:33am

Apparently the coronation ceremony cost has been "stripped
back" to a mere AU$189,000,000 [not a typo!] and the guest
list cut down from an estimated 8,500 invitees to a tiny list of 2,000.

In a recent YouGov poll, commissioned by the UK Republic
Group, 35% of those surveyed said they did "not care very
much" about the coronation, and 29% said they did "not care
at all
".

And from a pre-coronation YouGov poll commissioned by BBC
Panorama found that only 58% of respondents wanted the
monarchy to continue.

And yes... that's all real gold.  The royal coach is valued at AU$6,650,000.

But... The Evelyn Estate is just half an hour's drive from the
gold-trimmed gates of Buckingham Palace, but it feels like a
world away.  While at the palace they're polishing the silver,
tending the tulips and preparing the King's fine coronation
robes, at the Evelyn community centre they're unpacking
donated food that more than 100 families rely on.

Every week, volunteers transform this south London community
centre into a food store, allowing local residents to fill their
trolleys for a couple of gold coins.  They can't help everyone.
More than 60 families are on the waiting list.

~I for one certainly won't be wasting my time watching this
silly anachronistic piece of pomposity on TV.

I've just had the extreme displeasure of reading this bit
of offensive drivel...

Public invited to swear their allegiance as king is crowned.

Quote:
Members of the public watching the coronation on television,
online and in parks and pubs will be invited to swear aloud
their allegiance to the monarch in a “chorus of millions of
voices” to be known as the Homage of the People.

People around the UK and abroad will be invited to say the
words “I swear that I will pay true allegiance to your majesty,
and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help
me God”, in a declaration that replaces the traditional homage
of peers.

The anointing of the king – “the most sacred moment” in the
service, according to Lambeth Palace – will be conducted
behind a screen. Charles will remove his robes of state, and
will receive consecrated oil on his hands, breast and head
wearing a simple linen tunic. Afterwards, he will be vested
with the supertunica.

The amount of money the monarchy brings into the British economy dwarfs anything the British will be paying for a coronation, something that happens on average once every 32 years and, in this case only the second time in 70 years.

George III - 1760  60 years
George IV -  1820  10 years
William IV -  1830   7 years
Victoria     -  1837  64 years
Edward VII -  1901  9 years
George V - 1910 27 years
Edward VIII - N/A
George VI - 1937 16 years
Elizabeth II - 1953 70 years
Charles III - 2023

The elderly senior citizen will be 75 this year and will be dragged through the streets in a crude wagon that shakes the bones. 'Made from solid gold and adorned with 444 semi-precious stones, the crown weighs almost five pounds. The late Queen Elizabeth II once said in an interview that the weight of the crown would break your neck if you bent down while wearing it.'
Medical treatment costs will be enormous with years of convalescent therapy and law suits.

The biggest agreement I have with you on this website.

I kind of wish King Quadinaros would either skip his coronation or abdicate within the first 12 months.

Income will be massive to pay for the Prince of Wales.
'Costing an estimated $6AU billion to build, the carrier has spent more time undergoing repairs since her delivery than in service. A coupling had failed on her starboard shaft causing significant damage to the shaft and propeller and the repair costs for the carrier have skyrocketed to an estimated $38AU million'.
Damage control was in over-drive after the Royal coupling failed in 1996.

What are your thoughts on the likes of, say, Brand Finance's report 'Monarchy 2017'?

On another advantage, KC3 had a dramatically positive effect diplomatically when the British government sent him to Germany as the first British monarch to speak in the Bundestag.

UK tourism bosses say the coronation celebrations will
bring in more than £1 billion to the economy,
helped by a huge influx of foreign visitors, particularly
from the US.

And according to Brand Finance, the monarchy boosts
the UK economy by about £500 million a year, which is
more than the estimated £350 million it costs taxpayers.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations were estimated
to have given a £1.2 billion boost to the economy, and
the crowning of King Charles III is expected to have a
similar effect
.

Those willing to blow their budget could pay up to £4,350
for an executive suite at The Ritz on the night before the
Coronation, which is some £1,651—or 61%—more than
the same room the following Friday.  Spending in the
hospitality sector alone could be boosted by £350 million
due to the Coronation celebrations.

Laughably, the date of Saturday 6 May was chosen because
it doesn't clash with the FA Cup Final or The Derby weekends.

The fine chaps in the Polo game will be having a wizz on the 6th May, what? Parker Bowles was a damn fine team player with Charles on his polo pony (Pan's Folly May) and attended the wedding of Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. Parker-B could trot off to the chukka after the crowning of their wife and long live Charlie.

As a force for change or good in democratic societies, all the elected/appointed, non-executive heads-of-state combined wouldn't amount to the value of a truckload of pig food.

They have no power, are instantly ignored by the people once appointed, and no one remembers them, unless maybe if they're caught f~cking a goat.

I'd bet no British Parliament would allow a referendum on ending the monarchy, and nevermind the money they bring into Britain - I'd bet every British Prime Minister since 1837 has thanked god for the monarchy - someone to blame when things go wrong with their politics; someone to label entire eras after when things go right and then ride in high on the wave that makes them, as the prime ministers to the great monarch, after which the era is named.

If not for the monarchs, after which eras are named, few prime ministers have been remembered by the people - Churchill being the greatest exception.

After all, isn't it Geroge III who is remembered for having lost the American colonies and remembered by all Americans as the tyrant monarch? Do any Americans know of George III's prime ministers who wielded real power?

Listen Pal,

if monarchy had any real power they could have stopped WW1 in the first week.
Both the Germans and the POMs had their monarchies supposedly in control of their armies.

I kind of wish King Quadinaros would either skip his coronation or abdicate within the first 12 months.

1. William and Kate need to be crowned.

2. Charlie and Slut need to be put into an aged care facility.

Interesting mind game: if Charles lived in no 21 in a block of flats in a laneway and went to royal functions, how long would it last?
That is, he has no palaces, no estates, no troops parading on his footpath.  'But I'm the king!" 'Oh yeah?'

Does Charles still have extensive security protection, in this hypothetical situation? Ay Jihadi would love to take a shot at Charles, to off a monarch. Many years ago, Charles was subjected to some guy firing a cap gun at him and then tried to storm the stage Charles was standing upon. I could imagine that after the coronation, someone might give a real attempt a go. They would only need an opportunity.

The Palace has granted permission to use the colonial carriage that will carry the King to Westminster Abbey, and known as the Diamond Jubilee State Coach. A coach and submarine handyman in Manly NSW received $250,000 to build it under John Howard’s government. John never rode to parliament in it but may get a trip in a nuke sub or a plastic replica drone. The Vic Bushranger and Miners Union plans a hold-up of the coach to get some of the nuggets back.

In the real deal, royals married royals. Then the rot set in with dukes and earls having daughters who married a king. Elizabeth was half royal, Charles 3/4. William is 3/8 and George comes in at 3/16. Monarchy is moving from absolute right to rule towards a family franchise.

Anti-monarchy protesters arrested in London

Police say the republican demonstrators were conspiring to “cause a public nuisance”

Police officers arrested a number of anti-monarchy demonstrators and seized protest placards ahead of the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday. The protesters were arrested because they wanted to be able to choose their head of state and to be a citizens instead "Subjects of his majesty". London’s Metropolitan Police said on Saturday morning that “a significant police operation” was underway in central London. Shortly afterwards, the force announced that it had arrested four people “on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance,” and another three “on suspicion of possessing articles to cause criminal damage.”
