Former US president Donald Trump has been found guilty of sexually abusing writer E Jean Carroll and defaming her by branding her a liar.

The nine-member jury in Manhattan federal court awarded the writer about $US5 million ($7.4 million) in compensatory and punitive damages.

New York created a tort for rape after Harvey Weinstein got done.

The Me Too movement found that MOST rape cases aren't reported to police and prosecuted criminally, so they included it in civil law. E Jean originally for defamation, but the law changed after she filed, so she filed an additional suit.
