Isn't it amazing they can do global temperatures within one day. And no input from the oceans obviously. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

And still only back to 1979. I guess we didn't have weather before that. ;)

You would not have been able to accurately measure global temperatures before a certain time.

Yep. Liquid in glass thermometers - the glass being a liquid changes shape, affects accuracy.

The PRT (Platinum Resistance Thermometer) has a bias, varying by about 0.7C, apparently not significant according to BoM.

They now use smaller Stevenson Screens and these have different characteristics to the larger Screen.

And that's all in the last 50 years. They are good for providing weather, as the changes are relatively small. Not so much for climate.

If there was such a thing as a fu*kwit meter it would be 100% accurate even if it was off-scale when pointed at Denizen Lee and Denizen UnsubRocky.

"In each country, a national measurement system (NMS) exists as a network of laboratories, calibration facilities and accreditation bodies which implement and maintain its metrology infrastructure."

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Metrology is the scientific study of measurement.[1] It establishes a common understanding of units, crucial in linking human activities.[2] Modern metrology has its roots in the French Revolution's political motivation to standardise units in France when a length standard taken from a natural source was proposed. This led to the creation of the decimal-based metric system in 1795, establishing a set of standards for other types of measurements. Several other countries adopted the metric system between 1795 and 1875; to ensure conformity between the countries, the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) was established by the Metre Convention.[3][4] This has evolved into the International System of Units (SI) as a result of a resolution at the 11th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) in 1960.[5]

Metrology is divided into three basic overlapping activities:[6][7]

The definition of units of measurement
The realisation of these units of measurement in practice
Traceability—linking measurements made in practice to the reference standards
These overlapping activities are used in varying degrees by the three basic sub-fields of metrology:[6]

Scientific or fundamental metrology, concerned with the establishment of units of measurement
Applied, technical or industrial metrology—the application of measurement to manufacturing and other processes in society
Legal metrology, covering the regulation and statutory requirements for measuring instruments and methods of measurement
In each country, a national measurement system (NMS) exists as a network of laboratories, calibration facilities and accreditation bodies which implement and maintain its metrology infrastructure.[8][9] The NMS affects how measurements are made in a country and their recognition by the international community, which has a wide-ranging impact in its society (including economics, energy, environment, health, manufacturing, industry and consumer confidence).[10][11] The effects of metrology on trade and economy are some of the easiest-observed societal impacts. To facilitate fair trade, there must be an agreed-upon system of measurement. ...

And each of these countries does this hourly, then merge them daily to determine how hot it was. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

But tell us how often thermometers were calibrated in the field. What they weren't? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

World registers hottest day ever recorded on July 3

By Gloria Dickie

July 5, 20232:56 PM GMT+10     Updated 3 days ago

July 4 - Monday, July 3, was the hottest day ever recorded globally, according to data from the U.S. National Centers for Environmental Prediction.

The average global temperature reached 17.01 degrees Celsius (62.62 Fahrenheit), surpassing the August 2016 record of 16.92C (62.46F) as heatwaves sizzled around the world.

The southern U.S. has been suffering under an intense heat dome in recent weeks. In China, an enduring heatwave continued, with temperatures above 35C (95F). North Africa has seen temperatures near 50C (122F).

And even Antarctica, currently in its winter, registered anomalously high temperatures. Ukraine's Vernadsky Research Base in the white continent's Argentine Islands recently broke its July temperature record with 8.7C (47.6F).

Laughing boy starts up his chip on his shoulder message with claiming the lee and I are part of the buggerwits. For no particular reason, it seemed.

Then he pulls this sort of thing from a dubious source.

He doesn't understand Calibration facilities are indoors, temperature and humidity controlled. Not outdoors in Stevenson Screens. Just another yapping poodle. ::)
