MOSCOW (AP) — A private jet crashed in Russia on Wednesday, killing all 10 people aboard, emergency officials said. Mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the passenger list, but it wasn't immediately clear if he was on board.

Prigozhin’s fate has been the subject of intense speculation ever since he mounted a short-lived mutiny against Russia’s military leadership in late June. The Kremlin said the founder of the Wagner private military company, which fought alongside Russia’s regular army in Ukraine, would be exiled to Belarus.

But the mercenary chief has since reportedly popped up in Russia, leading to further questions about his future.

Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the passenger list of a jet which crashed killing all on board, Russia's civil aviation authority has said.
Earlier, Wagner-linked Telegram channel Grey Zone reported that the private plane, which belonged to the 62-year-old, was shot down by air defences.
Grey Zone posted later on Wednesday that Prigozhin died "as a result of actions of traitors of Russia".
Prigozhin led a failed mutiny against the Russian armed forces in June.
The crash comes on the same day that senior Russian general Sergei Surovikin was reportedly sacked as air force chief.
Gen Surovikin was known to have good relations with Prigozhin and had not been seen in public since the mutiny.
The aircraft was flying from Moscow to St Petersburg, with seven passengers and three crew.
It is said to have come down near the village of Kuzhenkino in Tver region, about half-way between Moscow and St Petersburg.
Grey Zone said local residents heard two bangs before the crash and saw two vapour trails.

A Telegram social media channel linked to the Wagner private military group has issued a statement saying Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin has been killed in a plane crash north of Moscow.

The channel has previously carried Wagner propaganda videos, and Prigozhin's official press service has linked to it in the past.

CNN is unable to confirm the assertion. Other channels associated with Prigozhin and Wagner, including his official Telegram channel, have remained silent.

A well-known but unofficial Russian Telegram channel that has been close to Wagner operations, Grey Zone, also claimed that Prigozhin had been killed.

What we have so far is a Wagner-linked plane that went down, and a passenger list with Yevgeny Prigozhin's name on it. Russian authorities are still identifying the remains of those on board,  however they have not yet confirmed Prigozhin is among the bodies.

We've seen Wagner-linked Telegram channels posting tributes to Prigozhin. As we just saw, there are makeshift memorials popping up at Wagner HQ in St Petersburg.

However, in Russia, everything is not always as it seems. There have been reports of a second jet owned by Prigozhin that landed safely in Moscow. Some security analysts have speculated that the crash could be a ploy to allow the Wagner chief to disappear quietly into a life of obscurity.

Keir Giles, a Russia expert with international affairs think tank Chatham House, was among those urging caution about reports of Prigozhin's death earlier today. He pointed out that "multiple individuals have changed their name to Yevgeny Prigozhin", as part of his efforts to make it harder for his enemies to track his movements.

So it may be some time before we can confirm Prigozhin's status.

Not only was it unlikely to be a coincidence, but I'd bet all Western powers and China agreed that Prigozhin and his 2IC needed to be assassinated.

Just to rub it in, the timing was likely a trigger to the Russian people's psyche (and dark sense of humour) for them to intuit that Putin isn't weak and dithering - he's patient and calculating.

What we're likely never going to know is: Were Prigozhin and Utkin already dead before that jet flew?

It would suit the Russian psyche for both men to have been tortured to death before their bodies were bundled onto that jet.

Innocent? I would take a wild guess that if you are on a private jet with Prigozhin, you are probably complicet in any number of crimes including torture and murder.

Although the cause of the crash is unclear, Russian social media channels is awash with speculation that a case of fine wine onboard may in fact have been a bomb in disguise.

Prigozhin, formerly known as Putin's chef and with longstanding links to the Kremlin dictator, is believed to have been on a 'kill list' after his uprising failed and he was exiled to Belarus.

Ten bodies have been retrieved from the wreckage, local emergency services have said, but MailOnline is unable to independently verify whether Prigozhin was one of them.

A Wagner address last night, reported by the Sun, stated:
'We directly say that we suspect the Kremlin officials led by Putin of an attempt to kill him!'.

'If the information about Prigozhin's death is confirmed,
we will organise a second March of Justice on Moscow!'

Meanwhile armed men claiming to be from the unit warned Putin in a video shared online: 'There's a lot of talk right now about what the Wagner Group will do. We can tell you one thing.

'We are getting started, get ready for us.'

Putin apparently has the support of 80% of the Russian people.

Prigozhin signed his own death warrant with his aborted coup attempt and the degree to which he insulted Russian generals.

And nevermind France, Poland, Ukraine, the US, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, China etc... etc... all wanted him gone, gone.

There would have been a conga line of would-be assassins out to end him.
