In the 1980s, then-owner A. Alfred Taubman launched the "Third is the Word" campaign to promote A&W's new third-pound burgers and compete with another brand's smaller quarter-pound burger.

Taubman recounted this example in his book, Threshold Resistance. "We were aggressively marketing a one-third-pound hamburger for the same price...but despite our best efforts, including first-rate TV and radio promotional spots, they just weren't selling."

Confused why A&W's burgers weren't able to compete even though the burgers were priced the same as their competitors, Taubuman brought in a market research firm.

The firm eventually conducted a focus group to discover the truth: participants were concerned about the price of the burger. "Why should we pay the same amount for a third of a pound of meat as we do for a quarter-pound of meat?" they asked.

It turns out the majority of participants incorrectly believed
one-third of a pound was actually smaller than a quarter of a pound.

Despite the confusion, Taubman took an important lesson from the experience: "Sometimes the messages we send to our customers through marketing and sales information are not as clear and compelling as we think they are."

Reminds me of an "Irish Exam Paper" that was doing the rounds in the mid 1970's. I saw it in a CBD office that I worked in at the time.  Here's a few of the questions (from memory):

Who won World War 2?
Who came second?
What is a silver dollar made of?
What time is News at Ten on?
There have been six Kings of England named George, the latest being George VI, name the other five.
Name the odd man out: Cardinal Heenan, The Pope, Jack the Ripper, Archbishop of Canterbury.
In the 1975 sheepdog trials how many were found guilty?

And a few more that I've forgotten.

People are getting dumber. That's not a judgment; it's a global fact. In a host of leading nations, IQ scores have started to decline.

A range of studies using a variety of well-established IQ tests and metrics
have found declining scores across Scandinavia, Britain, Germany, France and Australia.



Though there are legitimate questions about the relationship between IQ and intelligence, and broad recognition that success depends as much on other virtues like grit, IQ tests in use throughout the world today really do seem to capture something meaningful and durable. Decades of research have shown that individual IQ scores predict things such as educational achievement and longevity. More broadly, the average IQ score of a country is linked to economic growth and scientific innovation.

Even children born to high-IQ parents are slipping down the IQ ladder.

So if IQ scores are really dropping, that could not only mean 15 more seasons of the Kardashians, but also the potential end of progress on all these other fronts, ultimately leading to fewer scientific breakthroughs, stagnant economies and a general dimming of our collective future.

Some environmental factor — or collection of factors — is causing a drop in the IQ scores of parents and their own children, and older kids and their younger siblings. One leading explanation is that the rise of lower-skill service jobs has made work less intellectually demanding, leaving IQs to atrophy as people flex their brains less.

There are also other possibilities, largely untested, such as global warming making food less nutritious or information-age devices sapping our ability to focus.

And while we might be able to compensate with skills besides intelligence, like determination or passion, in a world where IQ scores continue to fall — and where the drop expands to places like the United States — there’s also a bleaker scenario: a global intelligence crisis that undermines humanity's problem-solving capacity and leaves us ill-equipped to tackle the complex challenges posed by AI, global warming and developments we have yet to imagine.

Why the decline in IQ scores?

While the study didn't examine the reason for the decline in IQ scores,
Dworak said there is no shortage of theories in the scientific community,
including poor nutrition, worsening health, media exposures and changes to education.

"There's debate about what's causing it, but not every domain is going down; one of them is going up," Dworak said. "If all the scores were going in the same direction, you could make a nice little narrative about it, but that's not the case. We need to do more to dig into it."

To that end, Dworak and her colleagues are currently trying to access a dataset that contains 40 years of data to conduct a follow-up study.

A shift in perceived values in society also might have affected scores, Dworak said.

"If you're thinking about what society cares about and what it's emphasizing and reinforcing every day, there's a possibility of that being reflected in performance on an ability test," Dworak said.

She gave the example that there's been more emphasis on STEM education in recent decades, but does that mean other areas, like abstract reasoning, are receiving less attention in schools?

Another factor could be due to a decline in motivation, Dworak said. Because the SAPA Project is advertised as a personality survey, individuals seeking out the test may be more engaged with sections related to measuring temperament and less engaged with sections that are seemingly unrelated to personality.

she was doing remedial reading for kids who had fallen behind.
She saved many from leaving school as totally illiterate using modern techniques.
The best you can hope for is that they can read and write something

She also succeeded in getting many of those kids up to speed with the other kids.

I has a HP programmable calculator in the 1970's

There was an exam question that you could program the equation to not only answer but to show the progressive working results for the answer. Funny thing was that to write the program you had to fully understand how to answer the question.

The 2023 NAPLAN school test results, released today, show that an alarming number of Australian students are not on track with their learning.

The results are the first to be released since the introduction of the new NAPLAN measurement scale. Results are now reported against four categories. Students identified in the “Needs Additional Support” and “Developing” categories were below expectations for their learning at the time of testing.

About one in three students failed to reach expectations in numeracy, reading and writing.
More than 40 per cent of year 3 and year 9 students fell short in grammar and punctuation.
All states have considerable room for improvement. In each of the east-coast states, for example, at least 20,000 students fell short of the expected level in year 3 reading.
Across the country, almost 100,000 year 9 students fell short in numeracy.

I checked everywhere on Google and Yandex.

There is no chart showing the highest to the lowest school rankings for NAPLAN.

The results are covered up.
It was however easy to find say the top 10 schools etc.
The Govt. has run for cover.

My daughter, who is no slave to IQ levels , is at the end of her 2nd year in University- she wants to be a Radiographer and regularly attains higher than normal grades in Physics, Psychology and other Uni subjects! It is one of the hardest courses to get into, so I am very proud she is able to do so well in it.  I cannot wait for when she is ready to receive her peice of paper to say she is fact ready to get herself a well paying job. She has 2 years left.

Been saying that about 'IQs' for years now - and I'm one of the highest lot they say... still don't believe in that .... genius is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.... I kind of miss out on the second bit when it comes to study etc... I rely on pure genius which is not always the best approach... though I develop some interesting theories and patterns of thought and connections....

There are indeed such towns and the One Way signs are very confusing to the locals.  They're not sure whether they're coming or going, especially when some wag turns the signs around at the half way point... a simple thing like - "I'm just ducking down to the pub down the road for a drink with the boys" ... becomes a rent-a-chopper thing.  Plan B.....

I personally know 2 people who have PhDs  and their lives were a total mess.
Neither ever had a decent job.
