Recognizing the broad consensus as expressed by 44 countries around the world on December 19, 2023, as well as the statement by the UN Security Council on December 1, 2023, condemning Houthi attacks against merchant and commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea, our governments issued a joint statement on January 3, 2024, which called for the immediate end of illegal attacks and warned that malign actors would be held accountable should they continue to threaten lives, the global economy, and the free flow of commerce in the region’s critical waterways. Despite this strong warning, attacks in the Red Sea have continued, including the launch of numerous missiles and one-way attack aerial vehicles against ships in the Red Sea on January 9, 2024, including U.S. and UK vessels.  On January 10, 2024, the UN Security Council passed UNSCR 2722, which also condemned these attacks and demanded that they cease.

In response to continued illegal, dangerous, and destabilizing Houthi attacks against vessels, including commercial shipping, transiting the Red Sea, the armed forces of the United States and United Kingdom, with support from the Netherlands, Canada, Bahrain, and Australia, conducted joint strikes in accordance with the inherent right of individual and collective self-defense, consistent with the UN Charter, against a number of targets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.  These precision strikes were intended to disrupt and degrade the capabilities the Houthis use to threaten global trade and the lives of international mariners in one of the world’s most critical waterways.

US officials quoted by the Associated Press spoke of a massive retaliatory strike using warship-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles and fighter jets.

The Houthi targets included logistical hubs, air defence systems and arms depots, they said.

AP journalists in Sanaa heard four explosions, but saw no sign of warplanes. Two residents of Hudaydah said they heard five strong explosions.

It is the first US military strike against the Houthis in Yemen since the Iran-backed group began firing drones and missiles at cargo ships in the Red Sea in November.

Sunak: 'This cannot stand'

In his statement, Sunak blames the Houthis for "a series of dangerous and destabilising attacks against commercial shipping in the Red Sea, threatening UK and other international ships, causing major disruption to a vital trade route and driving up commodity prices".

"This cannot stand," he continued.

He ends his statement by telling the Houthis that "we urge them to cease their attacks and take steps to de-escalate”.

Sunak confirms strikes by Royal Air Force

In a statement released at the same time as Biden's, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says that the Royal Air Force participated in the attacks on "facilities used by Houthi rebels in Yemen".

"The United Kingdom will always stand up for freedom of navigation and the free flow of trade," he says.

"We have therefore taken limited, necessary and proportionate action in self-defence, alongside the United States with non-operational support from the Netherlands, Canada and Bahrain against targets tied to these attacks, to degrade Houthi military capabilities and protect global shipping."

Houthis’ deputy foreign minister Hussein al-Izzi has just spoken to Yemeni TV channel Al-Masirah.

The network quotes him as saying the US and UK will “pay a heavy price” for this “blatant aggression”.

Houthis have not retaliated yet - US official

In a phone briefing with reporters, a senior US official said that there has not yet been any military response from the Houthis' commanders.

"As of right now, we have not seen any direct retaliatory action directed towards our US or other coalition members," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"We remain prepared, of course to defend ourselves, but we have not seen a response from the Houthis at this time," the official continued.

I am reminded here of the Cuban Missile Crisis (reading Abyss by Max Hastings), where JFK and a few other level heads felt that air strikes on Cuba could not give the required result and would leave some missiles untouched - and could themselves perhaps trigger a launch by some shell-shocked Russki with a finger on the button.

The difference here is that these Houthi 'rebels' do not have the support of many who equally have a finger on the button... and air strikes are more accurate than they were then.  Over Vietnam the US Air Force found out how inaccurate they remained and improvements made using technology.

Hastings himself said that his book was relevant today given the Russian attack on Ukraine - he began the book before that event - and especially long before this nonsense of indiscriminately firing on cargo vessels passing by in international waters.

Back to 1972 and the Battle of Mirbat .... FLOSY (Federation for the Liberation of South Yemen)** defeated by a tiny group of British SAS.... and two BAC Strikemasters which received their final run-ins via a telephone line to HQ and then relayed via radio  Kennedy equally lamented the slow passing of radio traffic from the US Navy - which left planners in the dark and wondering if they should strike or not!!

Lessons learned - we all hope this time.  P.S.  I do hope Old White Joe is awake.... and on the ball.........
