Why did they start on a Sunday?

It's always started on a Monday, or am I mistaken?   :-/

I didn't want to see him knocked out in the first round.   :o

His opponent was half his age - only 18.
Maybe the Joker is finished?

Nothing beats live action -
it went down to a tie break in the 5th set  !!

Hjikata  started the tiebreak winning every point but
then it changed and he lost the match.

Hello Bobby,

Well you are the only one who kept up with  the tennis- so pleased the The Joker is coming along there- he is good there is no doubt about it and he has Rafa and Federer upset about that as well.Rafa went back to Spain I think but that just gives him better time to breathe I guess- no distractions- I always saw the genius in him even when he was messing around before he took it up seriously, he had some definite talent that he just played with- but who knew he would all of a sudden take himself seriously- its all good anyway.

I have not been watching because my my comp has been suffering a few  things and in the next couple of days it should be back to normal- thank f/uck for that!!!

My daughter is still messing around in the USA but I doubt I can bring her back here- I will have to see what happens there-

I should be able to watch some Tennis soon- so upset about my comp taking this time to play stupid games on me-

I know the Joker will win it anyway but it would have been nice to see it. I hope you are making notes and there are times when I won't be able to even log in. So if you could record some scores that would be awesome- you are so good at it- Im counting on you - take care and enjoy the tennis Bobby !!

I think the Joker is a bit skinny -
he's on a vegetarian diet  - he needs a proper Aussie steak.

3kg more of muscle would help him.

I've never heard of that young Italian before - he's a hell of a player.

Hopefully he'll win again on Sunday.

This was evident as I saw it--he was bringing some good shots out and Novak didn't reply with very much- almost as if he were tired ?

I stopped taking much notice cos I  was sure he would pick up and whip that guys ass- but there you go.

I'm glad he won it-

Whose going to be in the final now though? Now I  will have to take notice- its a new situation. Fed or Rafa would have secured that spot....!

I watched wheelchair tennis today and I must say that they made me feel appreciative of my good health- it looks so difficult.

The Netherlands won over Japan today. She had a fabulously fit body and she made short work of the Japanese player, who tried her best but to no avail.

the Japanese player was not as fit but obviously fit enough to be in the final of the championship!!! De Groot and FRied Rice

Indeed.

But our Lord Mayor of Perth, sometimes Channel 7 commentator hoping to soon enter politics (with the Liberal Party, of course) and all round idiot Basil Zempilas doesn't seem to think so.

Basil Zempilas defends himself after viral tweet causes outrage

Quote:
Perth Lord Mayor and Liberal Party hopeful Basil Zempilas says his comments about women's tennis during a press conference announcing his planned entry into state politics have been misconstrued.

Quote:
Mr Zempilas appears to refer disparagingly to the women's Australian Open final as a "reserve game".

You really should make sure the microphone is turned off before "speaking your mind", Baz.

Here's what he had to say on X (formerly Twitter).

I need to make absolutely clear the conversation I had with @9NewsPerth reporter @GenoveseMichael today is being reported totally incorrectly.
Before today's press conference Michael and I were talking about how presenting the news when a big sporting event is on at the same time means a small audience will watch the news.
I then say to Michael words to the effect "are you reading the news tonight?"
He says yes and I say "the tennis is on tonight isn't it?"
He then says "the women's final"
And I then say referring to reading the news against that broadcast "it's like the reserves then".
Reading the news against the tennis was what I was referring to as "being the reserves".
Not the tennis.
I can not make that any clearer or be any more emphatic.
It is totally disingenuous and flat out wrong to suggest otherwise and I will not be accused of having said something I did not say.
I am certain Michael will verify this.

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/01/28/sport/jannik-sinner-daniil-medvedev-2024-australian-open-spt-intl/index.html

Jannik Sinner overcame a two-set deficit to defeat Russia’s Daniil Medvedev
3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 in a thrilling five-set final and claim the men’s Australian Open title on Sunday,
becoming the first Italian man to win a grand slam since 1976.

The 22-year-old’s remarkable comeback capped off a special tournament for Sinner, one in which he had defeated world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals on route to his first-ever grand slam final and ended with his maiden major title.

Such drama provided a fitting finale for a tournament which has featured an incredible 35 five-set thrillers, equaling the Open Era record for any grand slam, as Medvedev raced to a two-set lead, initially heaping pressure on the young Italian who was left defending from every corner of the court in the wake of the No. 3 seed’s precise, aggressive approach.
TOPSHOT - Fans of Italy's Jannik Sinner, dressed as carrots, gestures during his men's singles match against France's Alexandre Muller on day two of the Roland-Garros Open tennis tournament at the Court Philippe-Chatrier in Paris on May 29, 2023. Related article Meet the Carota Boys, the carrot-clad fan group rooting for Jannik Sinner, Italy’s rising tennis star

But, as the match went on, Sinner fought back, readjusted his own tactics and began outlasting his opponent during longer rallies. Suddenly, he had won the third set, breaking Medvedev for the first time as the Russian served to stay in the set and the tide began to shift.

That momentum carried Sinner through the fourth and fifth sets as he overturned the deficit and became the youngest male player to win the Australian Open since 2008, as well as just the third Italian man to ever win a grand slam.

For Medvedev, it was a cruel echo of the 2022 Australian Open final he lost to Rafael Nadal when he had once again let a two-set lead slip. Following his defeat against Sinner, the 27-year-old made some unwanted history by becoming the first player in the Open Era to lose multiple grand slam finals in such fashion.

It had been a long, gruelling route for him to even reach the final, playing in three five-set epics and spending almost 21 hours out on the court before Sunday’s clash with Sinner and, as the match crept into its closing stages, that fatigue began to show.
