NEW YORK — Failed former President Donald Trump’s first criminal trial will start March 25, a judge ruled Thursday — meaning criminal defendant Trump will spend weeks in court instead of on the campaign trail as he pivots to a general election campaign against President Joe Biden.

Justice Juan Merchan set the trial date after denying Trump’s attempt to throw out the charges stemming from hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Good news, Greggery. Mr Trump has been waiting for this day. Nothing will please me more than to answer these charges and clear my good name, he said. The rule of law must be followed. This principle is central to our fine country.

If he is found guilty, Mr Trump will fall upon the mercy of the court, reach out and seek to make reparations with the victims, as you do. Mr Trump will, of course, respect the verdict. He has always followed the umpire's decision.

He is our law and order candidate, no?

Multiple years. The big fella can't slander court officials, talk back to the judge or throw a hissy. If he does, he gets jailed for contempt, like anybody else. This is a criminal case. It's also a state case, meaning he can't pardon himself if he ever becomes prez.

You'll note he's charged with a felony, upped because he tried to cover up the more serious crime of election fraud - the crime Mike's already been convicted and jailed for, after following your DL's orders. Mike even has a tape of the big fella telling him to do it.

So there's Mike, the big fella's old lawyer, on the stand with taped evidence of the big fella soliciting the crime. The prosecutor plays the tape, the court hears "pay in cash", then:

"Mr Cohen, can you point out the other person on this tape in the courtroom today?"

...

"Thank you. Let the record show the witness identifying the defendant. No further questions, your honour."

There's the serious crime, proven - just like that.

If Mr Trump's rookie lawyer is listening, she'll cross-examine Mike, starting with this:

"Mr Cohen, did the defendant give you permission to tape their conversation?"

Mr Trump will be glaring at Mike, shooting daggers.

The prosecutor will be prepared. "Objection, your honour."

"Yes?"

"New York is a one-party consent state. Mr Cohen was acting perfectly within the law by recording this call."

"Objection sustained. Mr Cohen, we'll assume you provided your consent to tape the call. Next question, please."

Mr Trump's rookie lawyer will shuffle her papers, turning red, then:

"No further questions."

"Thank you, Mr Cohen, you can stand down."

From next month on, stuff like this will be all over the fake news each day, BREAKING. It'll be a real gas.

70% of registered voters have already said they won't vote for a convicted criminal, so the big fella's polls will start to slide.

The case has already been through a grand jury, who heard the evidence and voted overwhelmingly to indict.

Mike's been practising his lines, raking over every intricacy of the case on his Mea Culpa podcast. He's what lawyers call a believable witness. He knows what to watch out for from tricky lawyers, and he knows what juries like to hear.

But Mike's not all. There's Stormy, begging to take the stand. There's the woman the big fella paid to get an abortion. There's the doorman, Karen McDougal, the National Enquirer financial officer, already collaborating, eager to avoid charges. This is all going to be BREAKING, 24/7, playing everywhere but Fox.
