An Indian would have been steering the ship, under the direct control of the American pilot, if the Pilot had not taken the wheel himself.
Either way the Pilot had control of the ship.
According to some reports the crew alerted the authorities on land and traffic was stopped from going on the bridge, thus saving an unknown number of lives.
Apparently there was no real protection of the bridge against such a collision.

Such protection is not hard to build and when compared to the possible damage, not expensive.

You're right but I read today that 1,000s of bridges have no protection in the USA.

The Baltimore bridge is 6km from the upriver bridge which is beyond the ship terminal, a major port. Probably a good idea not to run all those ships under a connected span. The other bridge could be widened.

Maybe the bridge didn't identify as a bridge?
Instead, it identified as a rainbow.
