Sky News host Rowan Dean has blasted NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb after she urged people not to share misinformation on social media and to check police resources for new information.

“This is an absolute disgrace. This is a free country – the police commissioner is not the sole source of truth,” Mr Dean said.

“This is disgraceful how a tragedy is being used by our parliamentarians on both sides.”

The Sky News host also accused NSW Premier Chris Minns of “blaming” social media.

“That is authoritarianism, that is totalitarianism. Our politicians are out of control,” he added.

The Ministry of Truth
(Newspeak: Minitrue) is the ministry of propaganda. As with the other ministries in the novel, the name Ministry of Truth is a deliberate misnomer because in reality it serves the opposite: it is responsible for any necessary falsification of historical events. However, like the other ministries, the name is also apt because it decides what "truth" is in Oceania.

As well as administering "truth", the ministry spreads a new language amongst the populace called Newspeak, in which, for example, "truth" is understood to mean statements like 2 + 2 = 5 when the situation warrants. In keeping with the concept of doublethink, the ministry is thus aptly named in that it creates/manufactures "truth" in the Newspeak sense of the word. The book describes the doctoring of historical records to show a government-approved version of events.

X, formerly Twitter, says it will fight Australia's online safety regulator over an order to take down posts after a church bishop was stabbed in Sydney.

The platform's Global Government Affairs team on Saturday said Australia's eSafety Commissioner had ordered it to remove posts that commented on the attack.

But they said the posts did not violate X's rules on violent speech.

The team claimed the regulator demanded X "globally withhold these posts or face a daily fine of $785,000".

"X believes that eSafety's order was not within the scope of Australian law and we complied with the directive pending a legal challenge," the Global Government Affairs team posted on Saturday.

"While X respects the right of a country to enforce its laws within its jurisdiction, the eSafety Commissioner does not have the authority to dictate what content X's users can see globally.

"We will robustly challenge this unlawful and dangerous approach in court."

The commissioner has only said it was considering whether further regulatory action was warranted,
after it put social media platforms on notice to
remove graphic content showing recent violence in Sydney.

Here's the statement from X's Global Governance department which Elon references.

    The recent attacks in Australia are a horrific assault on free society. Our condolences go out to those who have been affected, and we stand with the Australian people in calling for those responsible to be brought to justice.

    Following these events, the Australian eSafety Commissioner ordered X to remove certain posts in Australia that publicly commented on the recent attack against a Christian Bishop. These posts did not violate X's rules on violent speech.

    X believes that eSafety's order was not within the scope of Australian law and we complied with the directive pending a legal challenge.

    X has now received a demand from the eSafety Commissioner that X globally withhold these posts or face a daily fine of $785,000 AUD (about $500,000 USD).

Half a million dollars A DAY for not removing posts that do not violate Twitter's rules but hurt the Aussie's feels.

    This was a tragic event and we do not allow people to praise it or call for further violence. There is a public conversation happening about the event, on X and across Australia, as is often the case when events of major public concern occur.

    While X respects the right of a country to enforce its laws within its jurisdiction, the eSafety Commissioner does not have the authority to dictate what content X's users can see globally. We will robustly challenge this unlawful and dangerous approach in court.

    Global takedown orders go against the very principles of a free and open internet and threaten free speech everywhere.

Elon Musk has hit back at the Australian internet watchdog’s attempts to force his social media platform X into blocking users from seeing violent footage relating to the Sydney church stabbing.

The American billionaire posted on his personal X account a cartoon showing the platform as a Wizard of Oz-style path to “freedom” and “truth” with a darker, alternative path to “censorship” and “propaganda”.
