Biden tests positive for COVID, cancels speech

LAS VEGAS — President Biden tested positive for COVID-19 Wednesday and canceled a speech to a Latino advocacy group in Sin City.

UnidosUS president Janet Murguía announced the diagnosis on stage as attendees began to wonder why Biden, 81, was running 90 minutes late to speak.

Biden taped a radio interview with Univision — set to air Thursday — shortly before the positive test was disclosed.

Joe Biden has tested positive for Covid-19 and is suffering mild symptoms, the White House has said.

Karine Jean-Pierre, his press secretary, said the president is vaccinated and boosted. He has had Covid twice before.

Mr Biden, 81, was seen earlier on Wednesday visiting supporters in Las Vegas and speaking at an event. He has cancelled a campaign speech in the city tonight.

The illness comes as he faces increasing pressure to step aside because of his age following a poor debate performance at the end of June.

President Joe Biden tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday and is experiencing mild symptoms, according to the White House.

Biden, 81, tested positive following his first event in Las Vegas, where he was expected to later speak at the UnidosUS annual conference. The president’s doctor said Biden has received his first dose of Paxlovid, and will be self-isolating at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, in line with US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance.

“The President presented this afternoon with upper respiratory symptoms, to include rhinorhea (runny nose) and non-productive cough, with general mailaise,” a note from Biden’s doctor provided by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. “He felt okay for his first event of the day, but given that he was not feeling better, point of care testing for COVID-19 was conducted, and the results were positive for the COVID-19 virus.”

The White House’s confirmation followed an announcement at the conference by UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía, after Biden was an hour and a half late to his scheduled appearance.

“I was just on the phone with President Biden. And he shared his deep disappointment at not being able to join us this afternoon. The president has been at many events as we all know and he just tested positive for Covid,” Murguía told attendees.

CNN has reached out to the Biden campaign and the White House for comment.

Hope President Biden is OK. Getting Covid at his age isn't the best thing that can happen to him right now.

And, I believe he's had it at least once before now. Even worse.

He'll get top notch care, of course. Something the majority of the population cannot get these days. In the US and Australia.

Mind you, I can't understand what all the fuss is about? After all, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) is "just a cold" now, isn't it?

It'll be interesting to see how many people catch COVID at the Christian Nationalist/White Supremacy National Convention (RNC).

boarding Air Force One in Las Vegas after he canceled a speech due to his testing positive for COVID. The White House said Biden would be flying to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware to recuperate.

Video posted by Reuters reporter Nandita Bose shows a weak and unsteady Biden hesitating several times as he slowly made his way up the 14 steps of the shorter Air Force One staircase he has been using to avoid embarrassing public falls.

With more and more studies being released that show Covid can cause brain damage and accelerated dementia (referred to by many as brain "fog" in an attempt to give it a harmless, warm fuzzy feeling), and especially after multiple infections, it has no doubt taken it's toll on President Biden and many, many other people.

So much for Covid now being a "mild respiratory virus" and "just a cold", eh, aqua?

I wonder how many of the 1.2 million people who have died so far from Covid in the US (and the 25,000 in Australia) would still be alive today if they had received treatment like this... and as promptly as this?

Especially all of those who have died (and continue to die) in aged care.
