Title: Shogun
Post by Sophia on Aug 10th, 2024 at 11:18am
Well I bought the 2 Bluray dvd set online, as it’s cheaper than paying another subs to watch … I’m happy to stay with Prime for only $7 a month

We started watching it… I have to have subtitles because of hearing problems….
That’s all good… but… most of the talking is in Japanese… except some parts are in English… and hubby said he didn’t want to watch it having to read subtitles.
So I’m watching it and enjoying it thoroughly…as I’m used to reading subtitles and they can all talk double Dutch I’m still okay as long as subtitles are in English.

I’ve just watched the first DVD with 4 episodes…. I’m loving it and… the time it was in, and a true story of events.

The scenery and props and outfits and acting are so incredibly good!

Looking forward to watching second disc.

I remember reading Shogun by James Clavel many years ago,  what was unusual was that it was written with progressively longer passages in Japanese which as the story progressed had smaller and few translations in English.  Claval was such a good story teller I came to understand what was being said.  I couldn't speak Japanese before and since I've forgotten it all but at the time I could understand exactly what was being said by the characters.  I'd heartily recommend the book to anyone with an interest in the period. Another James Clavell great book, actually better IMHO, was "King Rat", after all he was WW II veteran and prisoner of war himself.

All episodes I watched in 3 seatings as it was like a good book you just couldn’t put down!
2 am this morning… at end… feeling ….how harsh, brutal, tragic it was. Such a hard headed political time.
Interestingly, just recently Japan had an earthquake with 1 metre high tsunami waves.

And in this Shogun series… true to its nature… showed us how much devastation it caused even back then in 1600s.
