2 students and 2 teachers killed in shooting, GBI official says

Two students and two teachers were killed in the Apalachee High School shooting, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey said on Wednesday.

“There are four individuals who are deceased from this incident. Nine that have been taken to local hospitals with various injuries. Of those that are deceased, two were students and two were teachers here at the school,” Hosey said.

The resource officer at Apalachee High School engaged with the shooter and took him into custody, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told reporters.

“Obviously the shooter was armed and our school resource officer engaged him and the shooter quickly realized that if he did not give up, that it would end with an OIS — an Officer Involved Shooting. He gave up, got on the ground and the deputy took him into custody,” Smith said.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp on Tuesday signed a law allowing residents to carry handguns in public without a license or background check.

Kemp, a Republican, backed a similar proposal when he ran for governor in 2018, and expanding gun rights was a key part of his platform. He urged the legislature to take up the issue at a press conference earlier this year.

In 2022, Kemp signed a bill into law that expanded gun rights, allowing Georgians to carry handguns in public without a license or background check. A “lawful weapons carrier,” or any person who is eligible to purchase a firearm, can now concealed-carry a handgun. Long guns could already be carried in many places without a permit.

The governor has previously flagrantly defended his anti–gun control agenda to skeptics. After Georgia’s public media station in 2021 reported that the Giffords Law Center gave Georgia a failing grade on gun control, even before Kemp’s expansion of gun access, Kemp proudly delcared, “I’ll wear this ‘F’ as a badge of honor.”

When he campaigned for governor of Georgia, Kemp ran on expanding access to firearms. This included a nearly unbelievable ad where the then secretary of state sat with a shotgun in his lap, surrounded by even more guns, while speaking to a young boy about dating one of his daughters.

The official did not provide any information on how investigators believe the suspect obtained the weapon or any other details on the weapon and ammunition used.

Shooting people appears to be an unwritten right in the Constitution.
