Title: Equinox today - Spring has started.
Post by Bobby. on Sep 22nd, 2024 at 6:20am
22nd of September  2024.

The first day of September was the false start of Spring -
today is the actual start of Spring in the Southern hemisphere.

vernal equinox

astronomy

Also known as: first point of Aries, spring equinox

vernal equinox, two moments in the year when the Sun is exactly above the Equator and day and night are of equal length; also, either of the two points in the sky where the ecliptic (the Sun’s annual pathway) and the celestial equator intersect. In the Northern Hemisphere the vernal equinox falls about March 20 or 21, as the Sun crosses the celestial equator going north.
What causes the seasons?
What causes the seasons? In many parts of the world, weather cycles through the four seasons like clockwork: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

In the Southern Hemisphere the equinox occurs on September 22 or 23, when the Sun moves south across the celestial equator. According to the astronomical definition of the seasons, the vernal equinox also marks the beginning of spring, which lasts until the summer solstice (June 20 or 21 in the Northern Hemisphere, December 21 or 22 in the Southern Hemisphere).

If you live north of the Tropic of Capricorn (as I do), Summer started in early September.

At the exact time of the Equinoxes. if you were standing at the North Pole (with a perfectly flat horizon) you'd see one half of the Sun on the horizon and someone standing at the South Pole would see the other half of the Sun on their horizon.  8-)

Ummm?

Queensland, particularly Cairns and the surrounding TNQ area, experiences two major seasons,
'Wet Season' & 'Dry Season'. Dry season is April to October, and wet season is from November to March.

Today, anywhere north of Gladstone experiences middle-of-Spring weather. I know this, because I went to Gladstone the other night. Four weeks until Summer starts.

But there is no summer there - isn't it wet season?

We are having similar climactic conditions to that of 2015's weather. I was surprised that we (CQlders) did not get hit with a cyclone nearby earlier this year. Those blustery winds we had the other week should have given us pause to think about the likely monsoonal season being that of heavy rainfall and an early summer.

I was in Darwin just before Xmas one year and I couldn't believe the strong rain fall.
You couldn't drive the car in it - you had to pull over to a petrol station or somewhere.

That is torrential rainfall conditions. We see that in CQ once a year, at the very least. 300mm of rainfall in 12 hours is considered torrential rainfall.

You might see 75mm of rainfall in 3 hours. That is the minimum amount of rainfall you need for "torrential rainfall".

In fact, it needs to be about 50mm inside an hour to be considered "torrential".

All I can say is that with the wind screen wipers on the fastest speed
you still couldn't see anything and the road would turn into a river.

Not that uncommon up there, I had to pull over a couple of times, HK Holden, 1984. The pre wet season afternoon drenchings were nice after a hard day brick paving in the heat and humidity around swimming pools it was considered rude to jump in.

Yes -  and I wondered why the gutters by the road were half a meter deep -
no one had to tell me - I found out for myself.   :)
