How, with all the modern navigation equipment could the Kiwis have a hydrographic ship sink near Samoa? These ships are specifically designed and equipped to chart undersea topography. No mention of engine or other equipment failures that I’ve read. I bet the Captain loses his job.

HMNZS Manawanui hits reef and sinks off Samoa

06/10/2024

Royal New Zealand Navy Ship HMNZS Manawanui hit a reef off the southern coast of Upolu, Samoa, on Saturday evening while the ship was conducting a reef survey.

FILE PHOTO (July 2020): HMNZS Manawanui at sea for the first time under Royal New Zealand Navy Control, in the Hauraki Gulf. NZDF photo.

Photos circulating on social media today show the ship listing heavily and emitting smoke.

New Zealand Maritime Component Commander Commodore Shane Arndell said all crew and passengers from the ship were rescued in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“The 75 crew and passengers on board HMNZS Manawanui have made it to safety in Samoa and are being supported in Samoa or on supporting vessels,” Commodore Arndell said.

“The 75 left the ship in life rafts and sea boats after the ship grounded.

“New Zealand Defence Force worked closely with Maritime New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) which coordinated rescue efforts.

“Several vessels responded and assisted in rescuing crew and passengers.

“A Royal New Zealand Air Force P-8A Poseidon was also deployed.”

Commodore Arndell said the incident occurred on Saturday evening while conducting a hydrographic survey 1 nautical mile from shore.

“The 75 crew and passengers began evacuating into lifeboats at 7.52 pm on Saturday 5 October,” he said.

“Rescuers battled currents and winds that were pushing the life rafts and sea boats toward the reefs, and swells made the rescue effort particularly challenging.

“We are very grateful for the assistance of everyone involved, from RCCNZ who coordinated rescue efforts, to the vessels which responded and took our crew and passengers from Manawanui to safety.

“At this stage the exact cause of the grounding is unknown and this will need further investigation.

“At 6.40am Sunday, the ship was listing heavily and smoke was visible from the ship.

At 9am it was known to have capsized and was below the surface.

“NZDF is working with authorities to understand the implications and minimise the environmental impacts.”

Not meaning to offend any Kiwis on this forum, but after Helen Clarke gutted the Air Force by disbanding their fighter jet squadrons, the NZ defence force has become a joke. They’re basically defenceless now thanks to Clarke.

The Kiwis don't have a single jet fighter.

They are completely defenceless.

They only ever had old A4 Skyhawks  - sold off in 2001.

It is a damn good thing Australian ships never leave shore base or Australia would have the same problem.

Remember drunken Duncan the captain of the HMAS Voyager which was cut in two by aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne in a nighttime exercise collision.

At least the New Zealanders didn't cut their ship in half.

Australian ships have been instructed not to leave port under any circumstances since that incident.

The successful attack on Voyager was a text-book 'great white shark' ramming tactic.  The painted teeth on Yank planes inspired the jagged fangs on the aircraft carrier. It's hoped the method will  sort out the Chinese navy boys.

Holey, sunken ship, Bobby...

Could you even consider the possibility that the megalodon (confirmed sighting) is actively migrating near the waters of Samoa?

Nothing to do with carpet cleaners not having spatial awareness.

You realise that the way you are going the heterophobes are going to have a field day with playing with the emotions of the majority of Australians. Sick of the wokeness going on since 2010. A New Zealand Navy ship captained by a lesbian ran aground and sank off the coast of Samoa last month as a result of human error, including failure to turn off autopilot, a damning report has found.

Woke DEI - it'll cost ya!

After the sinking of the ship which was one of just nine in the New Zealand Navy and the first lost at sea since World War 2, Captain Gray’s position as commander came into question after it was revealed she had been promoted amid a push for diversity and inclusion in the Defence Force.

She was lauded in a June 2023 New Zealand Department of Defence press release celebrating her and three other female commanders, in which one gushed about a culture change in the navy due to a “focus on diversity, equity and respect for personnel”.

You wouldn't want to join such a defence force.

I think that sort of gear tends to be sideways and rear looking. There is not need to have it looking forward, and no need to use it in navigation. You could drive that thing into a brick wall and it wouldn't see it coming. That's what the captain is for.

Hydrography is not sonar navigation. The captain is not on duty or even awake 24/7.  Captains aren't always officer of watch. It's been 2 months and the captain wasn't suspended.

ahh..'They were the officer in control of the ship, an officer supervising that person, and the ship's commanding officer.'
The captain was there but not actively in control. The three wise men....

If China make it into Oceania and onto New Zealand. It would be a peaceful tame occupation, as NZ would submit on peaceful terms as the Chinese know that it has already been colonised by its yellow brethren Maori.
Asia and Oceania are more friends than foes.
A lot of Oceanian nations have made good connections with Asian nations like China.

Australia, being a part of Sahul, is a different story.
