Labor votes down action on price gouging :(
2024-10-09 greens.org.au Labor has sided with big business, voting down a Greens Bill that would have made price gouging illegal, showing they’re more interested in protecting corporate profits than looking after everyday Australians. “Labor had the chance to stand up for Australians struggling with skyrocketing costs, but instead they chose to protect their corporate donors,” Greens Economic Justice Spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said. “They talk about fairness and tackling the cost-of-living crisis, but when it comes to taking real action against the supermarket giants, Labor is nowhere to be found.” “Major corporations like Coles and Woolworths will keep raking in massive profits, while shoppers are forced to pay more for their groceries, electricity, and other essentials.” The Greens' bill would have made it illegal for corporations with substantial market power to engage in price gouging, with penalties of up to $50 million for those found guilty. “Labor failed Australians today. This was a golden opportunity to hold the worst corporate offenders accountable for profiteering, but they chose to protect the billion-dollar profits of their mates in big business instead.” “Labor tried every procedural trick in the book to stop the Bill going to a vote. They are embarrassed of their own position.” “This Bill had the numbers to pass the Senate with Labor’s support.” “If we’re serious about fixing the cost-of-living crisis, we need to rein in corporate power.” “But Labor is either too compromised or too weak to take on the big end of town. Australians deserve better.” The Greens will keep fighting for meaningful reform to crack down on price gouging and protect people from corporate greed. |

Seeing as the Greens couldn't discern at what average level "gouging" occurred, it was a mere thought bubble. Profit by dollar amounts does not show what they think it shows. A percentage of profit on turnover may do so. They are innumerate numbskulls. ::)

So it’s not so much that Labor sided with big business, but rather that they opposed a piece of poorly crafted legislation?
Before enacting any laws that impinge upon the free market, it’s imperative that the policy is meticulously designed. It must be airtight, setting clear expectations for businesses while ensuring no exploitable loopholes remain. I’ll look into the legislation later tonight to gain a clearer understanding of its contents. However, if it’s anything like their half-baked "just cap rents bro" proposal, calling that a plan is generous let alone legislation, it’s far from ready for implementation. |

One of the biggest ripoffs at the moment is Tim Tams.
Last week they were $6 a packet at Coles. A few weeks back they were 2 packets for $7 or $4.50 a packet and I saw them for $5 a packet just recently. Yesterday they were back to $4.50 a packet at Coles Belmont Forum. I don't know how much they were in Woolworths because I didn't go there. They were also $4.50 a packet at our local IGA on the weekend (and the tag said the normal price was now $6). |

I was just about to post a positive thread about Albo labor government than read this!
What an absolute disgrace they are. We need independents ( real ones not party people in disguise) so we can remove these scum from power ! |

No lie, I’m deeply impressed by labor ( Penny Wong) work to improve relationship with China. The removal of trade restrictions is symbolic and shows the damage done by Scomo and co has been repaired. Penny Wong is one of the better politicians, not only working hard but achieving results. I still can’t believe labor voted against the greens bill. They talk about cost of living crisis and than fail to criminalise those who profit from it! |

That's because it was a crap bill. Anyone can accuse anyone of price gauging if you leave it open. Who determines how much is enough profit? Unless the greens are prepared to set into the act a definition of 'price gouging', it doesn't deserve to pass. Leaving it open will just give big business another route to try to kill off the smaller players. |

greens have been asked to define 'price gouging' and refused. As the greens have shown time and time again, you just cannot negotiate with stupid . It didn't work with labors ETS, it hasn't worked with the housing scheme and it won't work with this. The greens are just too stupid and only interested in wedge politics. The worst thing that can ever happen to this country will be if the greens ever win govt and are given the opportunity to adopt their policies. We would go from a 1st world country to a banana republic in the space of a decade. luckily for us, the greens will only ever remain a minority party. |
