Yes, and the weirdest thing is mainstream economics is the reason why Trump is even competitive. The dysfunctional economy is front and centre in this election. Bidenomics was actually reasonably good for the US (it's the fastest growing G7 economy), under mainstream orthodoxy; but half the population is suffering under a cost of living crisis - hence the disappointment with the incumbent party. I hope Trump wins, which will - after Trump's policies fail - will force the Left to grow some balls and introduce a wealth tax in order to decently fund vital government services (when Trump's policies fail). I often wonder how his supporters will justify the personal negative impacts of his policies, like the real economic danger of his tariff claims, and using it to replace some income taxes.
It will shift the burden more and more to the people rather than the elites for the tax contributions. Plus, we've got literal evidence of how badly this went last time it was tried. Are his supporters ever going to think "huh, maybe things aren't so good" or will they default to "it was the deep state cabal" nonsense? |

Lichtman’s keys have successfully predicted every election since 1984, so his wrong call on this will be cause, I’d bet, for reassessment of his keys.
I suspect the ‘no military failures’ key will be the start. Given any key can only be turned once, no key can account for multiple instances of the same key loss. Given there is Ukraine, Gaza and the historical Afghanistan exit, his keys do not account for dissatisfaction other than one key loss. Also, he may have underestimated the ‘no social unrest’ key on the Palestine issue. Just because cities aren’t burning doesn’t mean there isn’t a passive social unrest on an issue to translates into turning a key. He did count Ukraine as a foreign policy success in Biden’s favour due to the US leading a coalition in support of Ukraine. He may have been over optimistic in this. This loss indicates that the keys have a flaw and/or Lictman’s personal bias clouded his judgment. |
