I was talking to a podcast yesterday and they asked me what might happen if Elon Musk and his gang close down a lot of government departments.

While the Musk zealots might claim they are freeing the US of wasteful and unnecessary bureaucracy, the spending that runs those departments is necessary to sustain the current GDP growth and employment levels, given non-government spending choices.

So if they scrap those departments and do not increase spending elsewhere to offset the chosen spending cuts then the US will likely fall into recession.

While we might take the view that a specific area of government spending is wasteful according to our preferences and values, at the current time, that spending is supporting employment and income generation.

So you better inform the DOGE duo they have to get the private sector to replace the 'wasteful' public sector with wealth creating activity which the public want, preferably while lifting the minimum wage.

As has already been said: a country isn't a corporation.

And you can't create enough business geniuses like Musk who can employ the entire nation. 

I predict it will be easier for Trump to get the hostages out of Gaza  (and god knows that will be difficult if he doesn't offer Hamas a Palestinian state, and only threatens Hamas with total destruction as he did yesterday), than  to create well-paying jobs for all Americans, with Musk in charge of the nation's macroeconomy.

No it isn't. You don't want to read the book and learn, but it's very simple.

A company is concerned with producing widgets, and making a profit while competing with other companies in private sector markets.

A country is concerned with creating the infrastructure necessary for the companies to function efficiently; government doesn't need to "make a profit", it needs to create the conditions for the (hopefully) profit-making businesses to thrive.   

Krugman is correct in this instance.

More to the point, Biden provided public funding for  his CHIPS and IRA bills (passed by Congress) to ensure the US could compete with China, with green technology companies  based in the US, not China.   

Trump will be making a big mistake if he defunds these programs.
