Victoria soars to 47°C for first time since Black Summer Anthony Sharwood, Monday December 16, 2024 - 14:26 AEDT For the first time since the fateful Black Summer, the mercury has reached 47°C in Victoria, as an intense heatwave bakes large parts of eastern Australia including a big chunk of our southernmost mainland state. Shortly after 2pm, the mercury peaked at 47.1°C at Walpeup, a tiny town in the Mallee region in the state's northwest with a population of around 150. As of 3pm Monday (AEDT), temps had reached 44°C or higher at several locations in the Mallee and Wimmera districts including Mildura (45.1°C), Hopetoun Airport (45.4°C), Swan Hill (45°C) and Horsham (44°C). Even Victoria's southern coastline has not been spared today's extreme heat, with Warrnambool reaching 41.2°C just after 1pm before rapidly shedding more than 10 degrees within half an hour as a cooler west-southwesterly change pushed through. |

I was whingeing about 35°C the other week. But, I could not imagine the 47°C.
I suffered through hot humid weather the other week until I decided to go see a documentary at the cinema. Best $18 I have spent. Free food after the event. Hope we get a lot more than 25mm of rainfall tomorrow and Wednesday. Low pressure system hanging off the coast moving northwest. |

On Black Saturday in 2009 it reached 46 C degrees at my place. https://www.nma.gov.au/defining-moments/resources/black-saturday-bushfires I went outside with bowls of water to save the birds - that were falling out of the sky. I saved many of them. |

I was doing deliveries the other week in hot afternoon weather. Friday and Saturday night was a matter of a bit of rain about. It was really good monsoonal type weather without the heavy rain.

That is really weird weather. We have minimums getting no lower than 20°C by November. After that, it would take a rain event with heavy hail for the temperature at any part of the day to go below 20°C. It takes until April in the following year to see minimum temperatures get below 20°C.

Christmas Eve is forecast to be 40°C. Christmas Day cools down to 33°C. But I will be around at my parents' place in the cool of the airconditioning to be bothered about typical Rockhampton maximum temperatures. Will be too busy watching movies in the loungeroom.

Snow flurries in NSW alps and Tasmanian ski fields give locals an early Christmas present By James Tugwell and Manika Champ ABC South East NSW Topic:Snow 2h ago As bushfires rage out of control in Victoria and parts of Queensland count the cost of recent floods, residents in the NSW Snowy Mountains and Tasmania woke this morning to find snow on the ground. The Bureau of Meteorology had forecast snow to fall above 1,700 metres in the NSW alps today, but some locals have reported sightings of snow flurries as low as Cooma at 800m elevation. Further south, snowfields in Tasmania recorded up to 5 centimetres of snow down to 1,500 metres. Errol Hanlon from the Thredbo Alpine Museum said snow settled on shady ground, car windscreens, back decks and some rooftops around the village. "We definitely woke up to a snow flurry," he said. "It's an early present for all the little kids running around in their pyjamas this morning trying to make snowballs and snowmen." Snow was spotted at Thredbo Resort this morning, but didn't stick around. (Supplied: Thredbo Resort) |

Title: Re: Summer weather Post by Jasin on Jan 3rd, 2025 at 7:30pm
Cities generate a lot of heat. Black tar roads, light reflecting off tall glassed buildings, not much breeze, too many people exhaling carbon dioxide, monoxide, car engines running hot, electricity heat everywhere and so on.

I have driven along Alexandra Street Extended where the houses stop and this little rural area begins. You notice that the breeze becomes a bit cooler out there just for the 2 minutes of driving. Then it warms up as you go by the housing estate. It is more noticeable when you do this during the winter months. I did pizza delivery in my teens. When I would go from the car to the house, you would notice the warmth coming off the houses as you approached. Outside of built-up residential areas, the place was cooler. |

From space on the night side.
All that you see is millions of electric heaters (cities, towns, etc) warming the planet up. |
