Jeju Air flight was carrying 181 people from Bangkok

Two crew members rescued, fire agency says
Aircraft was Boeing 737-800

Deadliest South Korea airline crash since 1997

MUAN COUNTY, South Korea, Dec 29 (Reuters) - At least 127 people were killed when an airliner belly-landed and veered off the runway, erupting in a fireball as it slammed into a wall at South Korea's Muan International Airport on Sunday, the national fire agency said.
Jeju Air (089590.KS), opens new tab flight 7C2216, arriving from the Thai capital Bangkok with 181 people on board, was attempting to land shortly after 9 a.m. (0000 GMT) at the airport in the south of the country, South Korea's transport ministry said.
It is the worst air accident involving a South Korean airline in nearly three decades and on track to become the country's deadliest ever, according to ministry data.
The twin-engine Boeing 737-800 can be seen in video from local media skidding down the runway with no apparent landing gear before slamming into a wall in an explosion of flame and debris. Other photos showed smoke and fire engulfing parts of the plane.
Two crew members, a man and a woman, were rescued from the tail section of the burning plane, Muan fire chief Lee Jung-hyun told a briefing. The fire was extinguished as of 1 p.m., Lee said.
"Only the tail part retains a little bit of shape, and the rest of (the plane) looks almost impossible to recognise," he said.

Witnesses describe a 'loud' explosion and black smoke

published at 19:35

Witnesses that are speaking to South Korea's Yonhap news agency say they saw sparks and heard an explosion before the crash.

Yoo Jae-yong, 41, who was staying near to the airport, tells Yonhap he saw a spark on the right wing shortly before the crash.

Kim Yong-cheol, 70, tells the agency the plane failed to land initially and circled back to try again.

Kim says he saw "black smoke billowing into the sky" after hearing a "loud explosion".

"I saw the plane descending and thought it was about to land when I noticed a flash of light," another witness named Cho adds. "Then there was a loud bang followed by smoke in the air, and then I heard a series of explosions."

SHOCKING - how can a plane land with no wheels down?

I also heard that it didn't use all the runway to land.   :-/

The idea was that an emergency landing strip of deep gravel allowed it to slide better and cause minimal damage.  Obviously not available.

I didn't see any gravel -
I saw a brick wall at the end of the runway.

No landing gear belly landing.

Brakes don't work if wheels aren't on the ground.

Boeing prioritizing diversity and inclusion over flier safety, Elon Musk says after near-catastrophic Alaska Airlines mishap

Elon Musk ripped Boeing over a filing that appeared to show the aeronautical giant two years ago began using diversity, equity and inclusion goals as incentives for executive compensation after previously focusing solely on safety and quality controls.

“Do you want to fly in an airplane where they prioritized DEI hiring over your safety? That is actually happening,” Musk said on X on Wednesday.

The billionaire, whose comments followed a nearly-catastrophic Alaska Airlines flight that suffered a fuselage panel blowout over the weekend, was reacting to a screenshot that showed a proxy statement from Boeing filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Beginning in 2022, the aircraft manufacturer changed its incentive plan from giving executives bonuses based on passenger safety, employee safety, and quality to rewarding them if they hit climate and DEI targets, according to the filing.

I guess hiring on diversity didn't work out or Boeing wouldn't have scrapped it.

Oh, the usual. CEO stock buybacks.

Remember when I said that I always preferred my pilots to NOT be there for Inclusion™, Affirmative Action™, and Equity™ 'reasons', but purely on skills and ability and training....

How true it is.... I never forget how I was panned for saying, some years ago, that my female pilot put the twin engine light down at Mascot three times ... in savage wind gusts.... a fairly reasonable effort ... now the chickens are coming home to crash ....

No wheels - no control on concrete - no gravel emergency landing strip.... slide off and hit anything.... no way to stop or turn... maybe there's a need to re-design airports with large exclusion zones around the runways.  How many times has an over-run or a veer-off hit a building?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munich_air_disaster

Still problems within the industry - FAA and NTSB not always near the same page - manufacturers the same with both - ineffective industrial controls (started by Reagan) over maintenance and such staff, including air traffic controllers... 'dilutee' pilots from Offshore and inserts from fringe elements ... lack of effective management and cost cutting/short cuts .... Reagan's 'fear' of 'over-government' lead to deaths ... the Democrat failures in inserting sometimes borderline fringe elements for 'equity' etc leads to deaths ...

Would you fly a used air route with a doped-up tranny at the wheel?
