Title: Assistance dogs
Post by Jovial Monk on Jan 28th, 2025 at 9:52pm
Not talking about guide dogs—a subject I will leave alone, too specialised.

There are hearing dogs for people hard of hearing—imagine not being able to hear your doorbell or oven timer.

On Twitter—until I left it not wanting to use a service from a nazi—there is a guy has early onset dementia. He has a lovely labrador bitch assistance dog called Margot that stays close when he has days where the dementia makes him confused for up to a few days at a time, providing affection and a familiar presence.

I don’t know much about the training and types of assistance dogs. This thread will be a learning experience.

Assistance dogs are trained—a high standard of obedience is essential—plus the specialised type of assistance. They get a special “coat” that clearly identifies them as assistance dogs and that they can get on transport dogs are usually excluded from: Margot has travelled Sydney–Adelaide in the cabin of a plane more than once. I could not do this for Socks—good thing too, doubt she would stay put for long  ;D Not to mention her farts, not to be thought of in the cabin of a jet LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!

Will start some reading and provide info as I discover it.

Dogs are magnificent!
