Title: Trump in humiliating backflip over tariffs
Post by Armchair_Politician on Feb 4th, 2025 at 9:02am
Trump has suffered a humiliating defeat of his tariffs plan, with both Canada and Mexico now not being hit with these tariffs that would have mostly hurt US consumers. He has agreed to give them a 30-day reprieve while he consults with them over increased security measures at the border. What's the lesson here? Just talk to people. There's no need for threats that cause carnage on stock markets world wide. It just shows that keeping calm wins the day over Trumps' ridiculous bluster and childish theatrics.

So who is holding all the aces now, all that crying that Trump does not know what he is doing. Trudeau has been given a lesson he will never forget.

Unless tariff imposition was not out of the blue...

If it was choreographed between the US, and Canada and Mexico to initiate the conversation regarding self-reliance, the actions make sense in terms of selling the concept to the peoples of the three countries.

A lot of financial upheaval in the crypto exchange (not sure about other exchanges as I’m not in them) such carnage  >:( …. Trump needs to think more carefully before blowing his trumpet!
So many have been hurt in the pocket already! It’s affected people from all corners of the globe.
It’s kind of shaken the confidence.
How does the future look?
America is already powerful in its own way and last thing it needs is a headless chook!
Any little change in the USA has a ripple effect on the rest of us.
A bull in a China shop does much damage!
Do I need to write to him to tell him that?

No… it affects everyone with any amount of money.
It’s not access to just the wealthy… the average have a chance at a bit of spare money.
A lot of crypto coins provide services if you wish to read about it. Then there’s the meme coins… totally different to the other coins.
Even if the prices plunge… the coins are still owned … unlike the slot machines… money in… gone!

Now then… if Trump is such a business man… and as money talks and bull shyte walks… I would’ve said this to him…

Trump didn't backflip looks like he got what he was asking for with border security.

Quote:
Justin Trudeau
@JustinTrudeau

I just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.

In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.

Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.

Yeah them whales!
I watch to see the patterns of where they’ve been… if only we catch them on way up to ride that wave!
But take heart, little folk like us have a chance too…
Now I’m not giving financial advice…
But maybe join up with Coinspot (I feel safe with them and they don’t charge huge fees)
Then look at XRP…. Big news …. I heard whispers that Trump thought crypto coins were a scam… then he and Mel and sons did well from their meme coins before inauguration.
So now Trump want to give better regulations for crypto and I heard, perhaps he won’t tax people making money off crypto.
But… here’s the latest… what is about to happen…
Join the ride with us mere little peons  :)

Canada already has high tariffs on US goods to support socialist woke leftist Canadian government.

Tariffs make US products more expensive for Canadians increasing this will lead to revolt in Canada.

They can't be stupid enough to think they came up with a $1.5b package in 15 mins?  Everything Canada agreed to was already in the pipeline, or won't kick in until long after trump is gone (new helicopters etc).

There is one problem I see.

For manufacturers  - let's say Mercedes cars -

It would take years to set up a factory in the  USA.
With the Chips Act Biden had to pay
$billions to get the chip companies to set
up in the USA.

It's not going to happen under Trump.
Mercedes will tell him to go jump in the lake.

I doubt it -
how would they import all the parts they need to assemble them?
They would have to pay tariffs on those too so it wouldn't work.
It doesn't make any sense to me.

Mercedes G class SUV starting cost $148,250 in USA

Mercedes G Class SUV starting cost $382,493 in Australia

Everything is cheaper in the US compared to here even with a 10% tariff it would still be far cheaper than what we pay.

why so much more here?

They would struggle to make Ford and GM viable let alone competitive. Cars are a lost market. Make a ford in the USA and it would have to sell for $140K.

Everything is cheaper in the US compared to here even with a 10% tariff it would still be far cheaper than what we pay.

That is just scale of market they sell through low profit high volume, In Australia it is the opposite high markup on low volume. The AU Markup is commonly 700% - 800% or more.

One example I remember from years ago now was a drum kit off the shelf in the USA was around $950, the same kit with a small upgrade (better snare drum - Ludwig Supraphonic) in Australia was a bit over $7K.

Checking now we have caught up a fair bit AU $7,600 USA $4,000

The AU markup practice is the reason that Australians being able to buy online was so devistating to the AU market, we were so isolated that ripping us off was a business level sport in Australia. They could and did charge whatever they liked.

Mercedes G class SUV starting cost $148,250 in USA

Mercedes G Class SUV starting cost $382,493 in Australia

Nothing to do with market scale that's bullshit.

Cars cost twice as much here because of tariffs and taxes we even brought in a Luxury Car tax to protect Ford and Holden who stopped making cars yet the tax stayed.

Honda Toyota BMW all far cheaper in the US around half what we pay because they don't rip people off to pay for bloated bureaucracy.

Petrol is less than half price there because they don't tax it like we do. We have fuel excise levy then GST which is a tax on a tax.
Over there it's not a question of getting a V8 it's small or big block V8. :)

Clothes are also much cheaper picked up Nikes for $59 and lee jeans for $19.95.
6pr Under Armour socks $9.95 vs $25 for 3pr here.

In the face of a trade war with America’s neighbors, Trump blinked

An objective view of the bizarre showdown with America’s neighbors suggests a blunt truth: Trump blinked.

The president vowed as recently as last week that there was nothing that Canada or Mexico could do to avoid the tariffs he planned to impose.

But he pulled back on imposing them anyway.

What a pussy   ;D

He'll give in to China too.

That was fast! Flailing Trump folds immediately in failed tariff clash

U.S. tariffs on Canada and Mexico are on hold for the next 30 days. MSNBC’s Ari Melber reports, and is joined by Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman, who discusses why Donald Trump folded.

Fake news, CNN bilge and misrepresentation (not unusual).

The Canada and Mexico are doing what the US wants them to do. Not the other way around.
