Title: Victorian wind turbine collapses
Post by Armchair_Politician on Feb 5th, 2025 at 6:46pm
A wind turbine in Victoria has collapsed, leading to calls (and rightly so) for a safety audit of all wind turbines. This happened in a brand new wind farm, and there have been other incidents, including a fatality.

And in other news -

"Hydrogen plant in doubt as SA premier refuses to commit to $600m project linked to Whyalla steelworks"

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02-05/hydrogen-plant-linked-to-whyalla-steelworks-in-doubt/104899216

And not just Australia -

"The International Energy Agency has warned of project cancellations worldwide due to uncertain demand, complex regulations, and high costs.

Despite strong interest from Japan, Germany, and Singapore, green hydrogen remains an expensive bet."

Quote:
The collapse of a wind turbine in Victoria's south-west following strong gusts in the region has ignited calls for a statewide safety audit.

It appears the turbine was toppled in the wind.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded wind gusts topping 60km/h on Monday night.

It's not known when the wind turbines will be back operating.

The Berrybank incident is the third of its kind in just over three months, leading the state opposition to call for an urgent review of Victoria's wind farms.

"This is not good enough, it's a brand new wind farm, it's only been up 18 months," shadow planning minister Richard Riordan said.

"There are now 2500 wind turbines across western Victoria. They've caught fire, they've collapsed, propellers are falling and shrapnel is flying off them.
"It's not good enough and we need to understand why."

60 kph isn't a strong breeze it's just over 30 knots good sailing weather.

To fail after 18 months shows serious design flaw were these made in China?

Might be just out of warranty

As this occurred in Victoria have they completely ruled out that it was in fact being stolen and the thieves dropped it?

It’s the most likely !

You would think that such a large engineering structure,
would have included into the design of its control systems,
'auto feathering' of the wind blades, during periods of high winds ?

Don't they ?

Or was the structure, just not 'assembled' correctly/competently   ....by Australians ?

The wind farm workers were three kids from Bulgaria on a backpacker fun holiday. 'Nice kids but new at this type of work' explained the owner's wife Cynthia, 29, 'we've built up a good farm here with new plant this year'.

Imagine this happening at an offshore wind farm. Those huge blades become a hazard to navigation for vessels at sea.

It's a throw away society.
Did you really think they would last forever?

Smaller blades may spin at 120 to 160 kmh, while larger blades may easily top speeds of 240 kmh.  A turbine may well decide it's time to throw it away.

a windmill collapsed and it didn't irradiate thousands? The cows can go back on the land tomorrow? The fish won't be born with 3 eyes?

We should thank christ it was a windmill and not a nuclear power plant

'Examples of defects as a result of the Chernobyl disaster included facial malformations, extra appendages, abnormal coloring, and reduced size. Domestic animal mutations were most common in cattle and pigs. Also, cows exposed to fallout and fed radioactive feed produced radioactive milk.' Some keyboard abnormalities included excessive smily icons.

Could be something simple like a auto lubricator failed or ran out of grease, bearing overheated, goodbye blades.

So a maintenance failure. After only 5 years, that is not reassuring.

The Great thing about Nuclear Reactors over pissy primitive Windmills is that besides a great return in power, they also give Australia a massive arsenal of NUKES to kick arse!!

Also, the nuclear waste being dumped in the outback will stimulate an accelerated growth of life, where there is currently useless land. The spillover effect from these radiated zones would be bountiful!

Bites on the buttocks can be caused by a number of insects, including fleas, mites, and chiggers. These bites can be itchy and cause small bumps or blisters.
