Title: How … on Earth … Post by Sophia on Feb 5th, 2025 at 10:47pm
… does a baby get forgotten and left in car?
Was bubby supposed to be dropped off at daycare? Who drove the car last? The fairies? I can’t watch the news anymore, it’s too distressing. I saw the baby’s cute little cherub face and I start bawling! Can someone explain how the f…. a baby is left in a car in 30 deg heat and forgotten? https://www.9news.com.au/national/babys-death-outside-childcare-centre-sent-shockwave-through-community/f4d71439-8c4e-40a1-8787-5a98649a186f |

Somethings are hard to understand. I’m trying. All I could think of was - distractions.
Something as simple as too many distractions … mind gets taken away elsewhere? Is it that simple to forget a baby? Last night after Mafs, a documentary about couples doing ivf for years desperate for a baby. |
Title: Re: How … on Earth … Post by Aquarius on Feb 6th, 2025 at 8:44am This "forgotten baby syndrome" happens far too often. Psychologists will say it can happen to anyone. But I'm not all that sure. I know we all have countless things on our minds in this day and age, but I have never known anyone to forget their children! I wonder if some of those parents who are guilty of leaving kids in cars had been drinking or under the influence of drugs? Obviously they seem to be unaware of the "look before you lock" campaign. It's a simple but effective routine that prevents babies from being left in locked cars. But unfortunately in many cases there are some people who really are not fit to be parents. |

I had thought that too. But agree with you. Some people are not fit for parenthood. I like that slogan “look before you lock” I hadn’t heard that one before. On the news it said an investigation is underway and the father hadn’t been charged (yet?) It was involuntary manslaughter. A life is lost. |

Who TF could 'forget' their most precious thing on earth?
Is it - like- an ethnic thing or something? In some ways I was a 'helicopter parent' - always watching over closely... in the water or anywhere... Any further news - the news report said the mother was assisting police.... OMG ... |

I think it can happen easily when someone is unusally busy. More so if you are used to routine and dropping them off isn't part of your usual routine. Many people, especially in the early morning when they are still waking up, go on autopilot.

Remember when it first started to happen here. The Philippinos and Chinese leaving their babies in the car to go play the pokies.

I was an intense helicopter parent and I’m still somewhat like that now my kids are adults… I’m always at them about being careful, go to the doctor is something feels amiss…don’t drink too much alcohol, here’s some vitamins to take, here’s some organic blackberry cordial I made! Etc etc etc
They used to say to me they are grown up and I said you are both still my little kids! They have given up on me and let me mother smother them ;D It’s out of love… purely! Now I’ve seen them with pets, and they are helicopter pet parents… to the nth degree! ;D I know they will be similar as parents… ….. and I’m still waiting to be a grandma…. Waiting…waiting… |

Oh I hope you don't have to wait too long to be a grandparent Sophia. It's wonderful having grandkids. With a bit of luck, you'll be babysitting those grandkids and putting those helicopter skills to good use! :) |

Bloody atrocious. The father is at fault here - must be a total airhead. I have no sympathy for him. |

I call BS on forgotten baby syndrome.
I totally agree with what they say are causes of it, but that's just what being a parent is and it's not a bloody syndrome. When my kids were babies, I was always engaged with them while I was driving, singing, talking etc. I bet the majority of parents who leave kids in cars are just generally not good at life. Forgotten Baby Syndrome is usually not a case of negligence but a memory issue due to distraction. It is typically caused by stress, sleep deprivation, change in routine, or preoccupation with other issues. |

Beat ya - I've got three... well four if you count the step.... I treat them all equally. It's a fine line, but the only thing better than kids is grand-kids.... as long as they are on the straight and narrow. Mine inherited their parents'/grandparents' work ethic(s) and social views of being fair to everyone.... doesn't always work that way from the other side - as you know Sophia - sometimes it takes years for truths to hit home on liars and such. Me auld mither said that you could never beat a liar - they always get in first and you always have to be on the back foot and nobody every believes you... remember that thing about your special one accusing you of cheating? Nothing you say will be believed - ever - and you can't prove a negative! Same applies in many other areas of life. |

I’ve never heard of forgotten baby syndrome before. Since the advent of internet and online vids… I’ve seen those vids where parents are not holding onto the pram at a train station, nor were pram brakes on….. :o I was same as you Gordon… always engaging and checking on the bubs… |
